Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

Back on the horse after a gluttonous Mexico trip. First bike ride of the Spring yesterday with brother, son, and a friend. 38 miles or so. Felt pretty good but legs were a little dead on the home stretch. My goal for the summer is to do a century (100 miles). I've done 60 miles or so before, but that's always been a goal. Will have to ride more than once a week for that to happen though...

Starting my first real week of Tough Mudder training today. Did the "Murph" (1 mile run, 100 pull-ups w/pull-up band assist, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, then 1 mile run).

On a semi-related note, anyone have any good ideas for a Tough Mudder team name??? Evidently I've been nominated to organize this whole thing for our group whose members are spread out across the country and the first thing I have to do is name us. Any non-lame suggestions appreciated!

Great little 40 miler this morning ('Rites of Spring' ride in Rockingham County, NC where I live, to benefit MS) with my brother Jim and son Daniel. Beautiful day and awesome route through the beautiful rolling hills of the Piedmont.

Ran there - 8min
Ran back - 10min

Id have done both in 8 but a stop light got me. My body aches. Im taking the rest of the week off from the gym and just walking with my baby

Go Mike!

Went for a morning run with the dog.

Hoping this is the start of a new routine.

I am fat and live a sedentary life!

well, i went to florida for vacation and watched the 60 and 70 year olds run 5ks down by the water.

a few were roller blading. it's a little weird to have a 70 year old woman whoosh by you on roller blades...

anyways, it made me realize what kind of life i want to have and it's an active one that lasts well into my later stages of life.

i love my parents but i don't think either one could run a half mile without stopping. they're going to pay for that in terms of life expectancy. both are likely to miss out on my (future) kids early adult life because of it.

not a boat i want to be in.

Started training outdoors today for my 5k in July in Minneapolis. Exciting. And painful. It does get better right? Running outdoors is not the same as treadmill running, that's for sure.

I'm sure I'll get there, but for now... yikes.

Yes, running outdoors gets easier as time goes on...at least that's what I've been told!

I hear you though; I'm 6 months out from my Tough Mudder event and am still disliking every day my training program has me scheduled to run.

Been fighting off a particularly nasty cold for the last ten days. My pre-test is in two weeks and I've been able to work out maybe twice during this span. I am currently sitting in a minute-clinic because I now suspect it may be strep. Very very frustrated at the moment ...

Ten days? I used to do that. Now I hit the Z-pack on the third or fourth day. It's just not worth it.

You need to establish a friendly relationship with either a doctor or dentist. Close enough where they will just write you prescriptions over the telephone without having to make a visit.

Feel better Henry.

Oh LORDIE, another Z-pack pusher

Thanks guys. Unfortunately, after two days of Penicillin there's been no improvement whatsoever. Went back to the doc, got a different prescription, so now we'll see if that helps.

I just the call from the TKD school that I've been invited to take the pre-test. I'm thrilled except for the fact that I haven't been able to work out in two weeks. And the pre-test is in two weeks. I'm taking class tonight if it kills me.

Missed crossfit yesterday due to a cold, not going to let that hold me back today. The WOD is titled "Fight Gone Bad" - I think I'll definitely wake up tomorrow with my ass thoroughly kicked...

Ordered P90X3. Should be here next week.

And this morning I swung by the Nike Factory store by my hotel and bought a Fuelband. It is charging now.

Let me know how you like that Neo. Been thinking about one of those.

Well, I'm up to being able to run about a mile without stopping. Of course, by "run", I mean a fast walk or a slow jog, depending on how generous you want to be. My wife is training me, and she's mean. Keeps calling me lard-ass and such. Very motivating. :)

So once I got healthy around Tuesday I went crazy joe with the workouts. The good news was I am in good enough shape that picking things right back up was not a big deal. Been doing about three workouts a day this past week. Yesterday did 100 pushups, then Ab Ripper X (completed the entire thing without taking a break for the first time ever!), then ran 2 miles, then Kenpo X, then T25 Cardio 1.0.

Survived the entire 3 hour ordeal fairly well. This week I take it relatively easy in preparation for Saturday's pre-test, which is basically 2 hours and 45 minutes of the instructors trying to break you. :) Time to carb up and hydrate!

Kick some ass, Henry.

I go back to working out tomorrow... We'll see how good of shape I'm in. I skipped Thursday and Friday.

Damn son...I was thinking I needed to work out today but I am out of breathe after reading this so I may just go lay down somewhere. ;)

Did my first P90X3 workout yesterday. Total Synergistics. Seriously good stuff. I am loving the 30 minute format and I can totally feel that I worked yesterday.

Did anywhere from 1.6 to 2.2 miles on the treadmill at the hotel gym each of the 3 days preceding yesterday too. First time in years I have done that kind of distance. I didn't run it all of course. No way to do that in my condition. However, I was pleasantly surprised when, on Monday morning, I did exactly half my 32 minutes on the treadmill at a solid jog. I truly thought I was weeks away from that for many reasons. I also threw in some core work in the hotel room each day.

I think the physical work is the only way I survived this trip.
