Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

ugh i'm so bad... first i quit working out, then i quit running, finally i quit biking...

i guess i'm going to have to start all over. i hate starting all over. ;(

Just googled these because I had zero idea what they were - holy balls. I think I could do maybe one rep of each before my stomach tore itself open. LOL. Well done, John!

Side note: I am out of shape as HELL.

We do those in class as part of warmups, usually after 75 crunches. It hurts sometimes! Hey, at least Im strong under those fat rolls I've got still!

Any nutrition gurus here? Was curious on what's a decent calorie intake.

I'm not a guru, but you can estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate using this formula: BMR = 66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

This is the amount of calories you burn if you were sitting on the couch watching TV. If you are active, you can also estimate how many calories you burn doing whatever it is you do. So basically, you want to keep your calorie intake under this amount if you want to lose weight, eat more than that amount if you want to gain weight, and eat that amount if you want to stay the same. It gets more complicated if you've got more muscle than flab, but then if that's the case you probably don't need much nutrition advice. :)

Ive got almost a month of not smoking under my belt..it still sucks. I loved everything about smoking except the cancer and smell. i loved how it felt with a beer, after a good meal, sex. I loved how I felt cool smoking. I loved doing stupid smoke rings and dumb tricks.

but I cant have my kids see me smoke and think its ok. Cigars are different..but smoking cigarettes just had to go.

You've quit for a month - if you ever start again I am going to publically berate you as an idiot :)

Awesome job man! You just made the single biggest health improvement you could ever make.

It does. It's like quiting smoking again. Which I have to do too.

just all the way around a depressing last 6 months for me in terms of health :(

Quitting smoking is so easy, I've done it 3 times! ;)

This last one is for good though...not picking it up again. The last two times weren't as bad, because I wasn't smoking as much. Its been 3 years, and I can count on one hand the amount of urges I've had in the past year. Lemme know if you want some pointers or advice!

Right about now you should be able to start tasting food again... I will never forget my 1st cheeseburger after I quit. Been quit for 7 years now.

Gotta admit...sometimes I miss a Newport.

you and I are alike on that one then. the first time i quit for like 6 months using chantix and it was super easy and awesome.

i slowly went back to it thinking i was over it and i could have one here and there with friends while drinking, but it was obviously too soon.

i'm trying to just quit without any help this time. not going so well. a few more days and i'll be scheduling and appointment to get more chantix.

nothing makes you feel like a weak worthless pos like not being able to quit smoking.

Smoking: Last butt I had was 13 months ago next week. Cold turkey and never looked back, though just once in a great while I get a mild craving. I will never do it again because I know just one drag will do me in.

What are your goals? Are you looking to gain weight/muscle? Lose weight? What's your activity level? Part of my MPH was concentrated in nutrition and I'm just starting my doctorate focusing on nutrition & exercise in preventive care. If you want to discuss specific questions or goals, I'm happy to talk via PM or email or whatever. :)

Just to be clear, I'm not a medical doctor and am not claiming to be a nutrition-specific expert, but I've done a fair amount of studying on this subject and am in the process of furthering my career in preventive care through even more studying in this area of health. Yippee. Anyway, health (specifically exercise and nutrition) is one of my passions and I'd be happy to lend you any help or advice I can :)

Don't give up. Everyone goes through motivational ups and downs, it's a normal part of the health journey. Biggest thing is to get back up and do something. Doesn't have to be an ass-kicking workout, just something to get yourself moving and get your endorphins flowing. Once you start activating those through even moderate exercise you'll start feeling better and your motivation start kicking up. Biggest thing, don't get down on yourself and let yourself spiral downward. You can do it :)

Great job Mike! Having worked in the tobacco department for a few years I've seen how hard it is for people to overcome their addiction. Studies show nicotine addiction is harder to kick than even heroin, so you should be proud of yourself for your success thus far. :)

And I'm with John, I'm going to kick your butt if you start up again, especially with a baby on the way for you and your fiancee. Like John said, this is the best health decision you will ever make.

Keep up the good work on quitting smoking guys! It's good to hear so many of you have managed to kick it.

lol..you 2. oh you 2.

so this is how easily I get a craving trigger. Its 0645, I dont ever smoke this early in the morning. but on the road driving and drive past someone with a smoke in their hand. now for the past hour I have been fighting this urge to go light up.

I wont. But I want one.

keep asking yourself "what value does a smoke bring me" through the cravings

I'm gonna try to quit snuff since there's all this quitting talk.

CrossFit today:

5 Rounds
1 min. each exercise
As many reps in that 1 min. as you can do

1. Box Jumps

2. Rope

3. Sumo High Pull

4. KBF Squat

5. Sit-ups

My back is FINALLY loosening up. Managed a real slow 3 mile jog on Monday and yesterday and survived them. Tuesday was TKD class. We worked on falls, and ground game. Probably not great for the back but no soreness yet. Today I'm going to give Kenpo X a shot.
