IMO, The greatest coach in NFL history. The coach of my childhood and the guy who formed my "football head".
His greatest coaching feat IMO was taking a team of scab players into Dallas and beating a Dallas squad that had pro players that had crossed the picket line.
When I was in my early 20's, I had a job at a John Deere dealership in Wilkesboro NC. The Nascar Winston Cup Series still raced at North Wilkesboro back then and as a promotion, the dealership supplied the race track with the Gators(ATVs) for the garage area and drivers.
Wound up with garage passes for qualifying and got to go in and see guys like Richard Petty,Dale Earnhardt and got to meet Junior Johnson and Bill Elliott. But the best was Joe Gibbs....
Saw Joe standing at the end of the hauler and told my manager I got to go down there! It's Joe Gibbs! Made my way through the crowd and by the time I got there,Joe had disappeared into the hauler. A crew member was there and asked me what I was wanting and I told him I wanted to get Coach to sign my race ticket. The guy told me Coach was very busy right now and so I replied that I understood and I turned and walked away.
As I was making the walk up garage row, obviously disappointed, I heard a voice "Hey! Hey you!" I turned around and it was Coach Gibbs, with that big smile saying "Come back here! What can I do for you?".
Was on cloud nine the rest of that day and I joked with friends later that Coach would never leave a Redskins fan hangin'!
Happy Birthday Coach Gibbs!!
