I wouldn't be as quick to dismiss the possibility of an opening day roster of Griffin, Crompton, & Cousins.
Maybe they feel Crompton's athletic advantage over Grossman trumps his lack of game experience. And, in tweaking the offense to Griffin's capabilities, if he were to get hurt, they'd have to alter the game plan more for the immobile Grossman, than they would Crompton. Who, sight unseen, HAS to be more mobile than Sexy.
With a year in the system, Crompton might be ready for the back up role. It makes sense that they look to be giving him a shot at it, by giving him reps with the 1st team. If he can show some efficiency in preseason, he may well be #2. Making Sexy available as trade bait to team hurt by injury during the preseason.
Besides, does anybody in the world not already know what we have in Grossman? If Crompton is another Beck, Grossman could be #2 without many reps. The man is as good as he'll ever be.
I think you're right Ax. Crompton hopefully was a sponge last year, and may make Rex expendanble. I think the third QB spot may come down to Crompton or Rex, and if Crompton plays well during the camps and practices, he may lock it down.
Guys, we need to adjust our thinking.
There seems to be a habit of thinking among fans that you can take virtually any guy who plays QB, and place him as a backup and/or PS member, and let him hold the clipboard and study for a year or two, and PRESTO, out of the machine comes at least a serviceable NFL starter or backup.
It's as if fans are totally ignoring the raw talent aspect of the game.
You can stash a player as a backup and/or PS player and let him study the offense/system, etc for an entire decade, and all that knowledge and familiarity won't matter worth a hill of beans, if he lacks the necessary raw tools to play the utmost demanding position of NFL QB.
Look no further than John Beck.
There's a reason why Crompton was waived FOUR times, in the span of less than a year. In fact, prior to signing with the Skins last year, of the 3 teams who previously signed him, he never lasted more than TWO days on EVEN the PS of any of those teams. And of course, he has a total of zero days on an active roster of any team.
Besides the fact that there's good reason he was cut so often and quickly, there's also
no reason to build up any NFL expectations of him at this point. It's just wishful thinking right now. I'm not saying he won't succeed. There's just no reason to be so confident that he can step in as a #2 or even a #3 this year. He's accomplished nothing and proven nothing as an NFL player.
