Great Movies That Others Might Enjoy, Or Ones To Avoid

The Straight Story is phenomenal…
 
My list of movies seemingly nobody else has seen but I really liked:

- Sleight (a bit of a different superhero movie)
- Take Shelter (what is really going on?)
- The Endless (what is really going on? pt. 2 lol)
- Faults (great acting, just enough creepiness)
- The Blackcoat’s Daughter (thick with dread and queasy violence, and I loved the very end)
- Super Dark Times (starts off dark, and gets very dark by the end)

I consider myself a movie buff and not only haven’t I seen any of those, I’ve never heard of them. Will try and work my way through your list.

I think I clicked record on that one so I'll have to check it out. I record almost all of the movies on YT TV that I think I might watch someday because that way you can skip all the commercials. I don't watch anything live anymore other than NFL games. I was even trying to watch the NBA playoffs on delay just to skip all that crap.

Life is short, even shorter for some of us, so I have no time for commercials.
 
Superman was fun, I found it paced well, masterpiece it is not, much more comic oriented in its approach. Its worth a watch, not a must see right now and not a Donner film for sure but decent reboot, remake whatever you call it. For reports calling it "woke" eh there's a sliver of what I'd call unnecessarily dialogue that is annoying but I wouldn't call it "woke".
 
Kept thinking of this thread and then kept coming up with more movies lol…

These first movies are based on real events:

- City Of God (I think a lot of people have seen this but if you haven’t, go watch it right now…and watch the end credits)

- Shattered Glass (holy shit, is this ever good)

- Animal Kingdom (Australian film, true crime, there may be a tv show based on the movie. Ben Mendelsohn and Jacki Weaver are frightening and outstanding)

- Snowtown (another Aussie film based on true events. This one often gets brutal and there’s no relief given)

And one that’s pure fiction:

- The Other (1974 film, not the ghost story film with Nicole Kidman. Not nearly as good as the other ones listed but it freaked me out when I was like 12 watching it on cable and has stuck with me ever since. The hauntingly melancholy score by Jerry Goldsmith is excellent as well-see below).

Just watched the new Fantastic Four last night. Really good movie. Awesome action scenes and cool plot. This is one that is great in the theater.
 
Sinners. Good vampire movie!

Buddy Guy at the end slays. Mississippi blues juke joint version of From Dusk to Dawn but better IMO

'Where the Crawdads Sing'. 2022 movie I stumbled onto. Daisy Edgar-Jones is fantastic in the lead. Very well done flick.
 
Soooo.... As a writer, I have a passion for reading. HG Wells 'War of the Worlds' is probably my favorite book of all time. I've read it countless times and it's been influential on my own work.

I've read pretty much all of the sequel and spin off novels, some are good, some are just okay.

I may be one of the only people what loved the Spielberg movie, and any time I see an adaptation I flock to it. BBC did a so-so TV adaptation a few years ago, and there was a mock documentary (I forget the name) which was fantastic.

BUT...

This weekend I watched the new adaptation on Amazon Prime. It's AWFUL.

Catagorically one of the worst films I've ever ever ever seen.

Spoilers in case you want to watch it... dont' read further.

It stars Ice Cube, who's dreadful. It has Clark Gregg and Eva Longoria in it too. These are low points in their acting careers.
The WHOLE movie is done as a sort of 'what we see on our computer screen' conceit. Bit like a found footage film, but imagine everything being seen through webchat windows, security cameras, etc. It may sound interesting, but it's not.
The aliens arrive, and start to take down the worlds infrastructure, especially the digital infrastructure because apparently they feed on data... yet despite this, Ice Cube still manages to stay connected to the internet the whole time to save the day.
(Talking about saving the day, this film does it with product placement. Remember this is an Amazon Prime movie... Ice Cube manages to save the world because an Amazon Same Day delivery drone delivers a USB key to him that he buys on Amazon... Yup, Amazon is still trucking despite the end of the world.)
The film is a brisk 90 mins or so, and everything kind of happens in real time... so consider that the aliens invade, the military globally fights back and loses, then the aliens are defeated by a hacker and his dad...in 90 mins.

The film is just awful. If you have some time you don't mind never getting back, go witness the awfulness. Otherwise avoid like the plague!
 
Has anyone watched Chief of War yet?
