Give Credit to Redskins Defense

TOP can be misleading when you give up 50+ yard plays like they're going out of style :D

Right, but if we've held the ball the 9th longest, teams haven't run "more than the usual number of plays" against us, so we wouldn't have more opportunities to make tackles for a loss as Ryman says. :)

EDIT: The problem lies more in our defense on 2nd or 3rd & long - its atrocious. Much of this can be attributed to our lack of pass-rush & weak secondary.

The D is playing much sounder ball than they were in the historically bad stretch between the middle of last season and the bye week this year. Not sure anyone would argue otherwise, statistically or by any other measure. But the lack of pass rush and porous (to be generous) secondary are almost sure to be the team's eventual downfall in 2012.

Part of me almost dreads seeing us get hot, make a run deep into the playoffs, and end up facing Rodgers ... or Ryan ... or even Brady or Manning ... with all the chips on the table.

Nice problem to have after 20 years of suck? Sure.

But still.

* shudder *

Lanky, the issue isnt our TOP, our offence starting to move the ball better and our use of each down makes the difference there, the defence though allows teams to move the ball in large chunks and teams do seem to run a lot of plays against us. its improved but like Om said I worry about playing a great qb or RB with chips on the line.

Redskins have had the 18th most plays from scrimmage on defense, and are 4th overall in tackles for a loss. You do the math. :) TOP leads to less plays run on our defense.

Its okay, Ryman - you can be positive about the things the D is doing well. :)

Fear,

It wasn't a blowout for sure. 24-17. But Ryan did go for 345 yards and 2 TD's, and Atlanta scored 17 in the 4th quarter. I recall thinking in that game---as I did against Dalton vs Cincy---that the other team could pretty much score at will if they had wanted to, but took the air out of the ball with a lead late in the game to run the clock and keep the ball out of RG3's hands.

Again, I'm not down on the D at this point. They turned things around nicely after the bye and have played a huge part in the turnaround. But the improvement has to be seen in context. Compared to where we WERE, the D is looking pretty good right about now. But I still hold my breath whenever an opposing QB drops back and starts scanning the field.

Our pass defense still feels to me like a juggler on a unicycle on a highwire in a windstorm.

I do. Come January the opposition can generally score too, plus play defense a bit. I'd like my D to provide a bit of a safety net.

Om, don't get me wrong, I am concerned about the defense too. At least somewhat. The thing that I am finding a bit different this year is the defenses ability to turn the big play. They give nearly as good as they get in this regard this year and when they do have one of those great take away's, they are as likely to score off it as the offense which is saying something with this offense.

Are we going to stonewall anyone regularly? No, not a chance. Can we hurt any offense in the league? Yeah, yeah we can. And that isn't something we would have said before this year.

Let's be realistic. The Redskins are not going to be markedly better on defense until the team acquires a pair of starting NFL cover corners with decent size, which we don't have.

That and the return of Carriker and Orakpo and the further development of younger players like Perry Riley and Keenan Robinson along with Jarvis Jenkins.

What we can hope for and expect is a defense that scraps and plays hard and gets off the mat after making a mistake to go on and make plays when they are there.

That's what they have been doing lately.

And like New England's defense last season that's as much as you can expect until injured players return and additional talent is added.

I agree with the general assessment here, though I would say safeties are more of a need than corner at the moment. Are corners are mediocre but our safeties are atrocious.

I dont know if i agree with you... Our safeties have struggled, but we also lost Meriweather and Jackson early. That being said, the trio we've had in the game have been doing an adequate job, and you gotta think the younger guys are going to continue to develop.

I've seen the big plays and the majority of the brain farts on the big passing plays came from the CBs, leaving the safeties exposed in situations they shouldnt be in.

Neo,

The big plays are definitely a fresh breeze around here. Remember when we used to track how long it had been since we scored a defensive TD? We went several SEASONS without one....now we celebrate them fairly regularly and don't consider them snow leopards.

Philosophy class flashback.

The turnovers have also become a regular staple. The pain of so many years w/o regular turnovers has not faded--I still jump out of my seat when we pick somebody off.

My only point was that for this team, this year, the only thing I see standing between us and a possible late-January push is the pass D. Our offense can score on anyone. Our special teams have solidified. And the defense can definitely keep us in games these days. The problem for me is imagining us trying to protect a late lead in a playoff game against a Ryan, Rodgers, Manning, Brady....I have too many zero-blitz and Victor Cruz-type ghosts still in my head to be able to imagine that scenario ending happily.

Next year though? With a real FS and maybe a corner? Bring it on. :)

We lost the first Giants game on the long ball to Cruz when Williams bit up and let Cruz get behind him. That wasn't the CB's fault.

Just sayin'.

And how much would you like to have that one game back right now?

And Om, I pretty much agree with that. We are playing better on the defensive side of the ball but not so well that I think a 4 point lead with 1:30 left on the clock would stand up to Rogers or Brady or Manning right now. I actually think we would have a better chance of actually taking the ball away on a turnover than stopping one of them on downs, which was the point I was driving at but didn't say very well.

and Josh Wilson bit on crossing pattern, giving the WR from Carolina the sideline for the throat stomper touchdown.. I'd like to have that one.

Williams also knocked a sure touchdown out a WR hands in the game against Dallas.

I didnt say ALL the bad plays... i said the majority.

I get your point ST. I do. I just disagree in which group is weaker is all. Right now I would replace both starting Safeties if I could while I would really only replace one starting CB.

Yeah, I know Wilson hasn't been perfect but then neither was Darrell Green (not that I am comparing Wilson to Green). I just think that if we had a stud CB opposite Wilson he would suddenly look a lot better while I don't think replacing one Safety would make that second Safety look much better at all.

i dont know... our secondary looked pretty good when Meriweather was in the game... and he's (HOPEFULLY) coming back healthy next year.... where next year... D. Hall is year older.. and getting $4mil MORE then he's getting this year

Sorry for barging in, but wouldn't that support Neo's stance that it is the safeties who are awful? An increase in talent at one safety position for one game utterly transformed the defense.

I agree that our safety spot is perhaps worse given injuries etc, but I also think its harder to find a good corner than a good safety and a good corner would be a bigger immediate difference maker. we had a solid saftey, we even had a hall of fame safety, they take away the massive plays, but we need to fill several holes lol

Seems to me that the "massive" play is our biggest issue at the moment Ryman.
