It's not an end of the world signing...imo, Rex makes a good bridge QB and is perfect as a spot starter.

Steve DeBerg wasn't a very good QB but his deficiencies didn't seem to kill Montana's development....same thing with Rex.

He's a marginal talent. He's not going to kill RG3's talent.

Alot of hand wringing for nothing............

I think they draft someone late, 6 or 7th. To be honest, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they drafted Weeden with on of the 4th's if he drops that far.
 
Pretty sure we are done with QBs - exception being the RG3/Luck pick. Not sure about Crompton, but he will probably get a look and back to the PS.

hey...we have our franchise QB...one has to believe the right decision was made. all else is secondary. RGIII...just like Brady or Manning...will be the constant the team is built around for at least 10 years. that's the pattern these days...once a team finds that QB...they're up/down for two year stretches...but they never fall too far....they don't need to be drafting in the top 5-10.

as long as Rex isn't under center come game 1...I'm cool.
 
BB...the cap is supposed to go up significantly in two years. my take on any FA contracts 2 years or less is that either the player isn't fully committed or the team sees the player as stop gap.....your take?

In some cases, it is probably a stop gap while others are too obvious. It could be that we are doing some of these contracts with the realization of what happened this past week.

You really do want all your qbs starting from zero, guys. This way, the coaches can really work and focus on the rook. If we got an Orton or even a Manning, you would have to spend a tremendous amount of time teaching them the basics of the system til they got up to speed. Divided attention that might have hurt Griffin or Luck's development.

My only hope with Rex is that in a non lockout year the trainers get on him and they improve his armstrength by at least ten percent. He turned so many easy touchdowns into devestating picks because he underthrew the ball so badly. The mental part sadly we'll have to live with. If that hasn't been coached out of him yet it never will be.

I wouldn't mind all of our QBs starting from zero.

Even in a lockout year Andy Dalton and CAM!! (oh,Cam) Newton had very spectacular rookie seasons. We are in position to pick an even better NFL ready QB that come along once a decade or so.

Are you suggesting that our Super smart offensive minded coaches are not on the level of the less than brilliant minds at Cincy and Carolina? :)

That old saying you can't teach an old dog new tricks rings true when it comes to (my game is) Gross,man.

That's fair, ND. I just think that focusing all our attention on the Rook and having the gray beard be ready without excessive love and tutoring is useful. I actually don't know if in the cases of Dalton and Cam how long their back ups had been with the team. I suspect they didn't get their back ups and their new qbs all at the same time, but I could be wrong.

My hope is that Griffin/Luck is ready to go from day one, but I don't mind having a back up who's capable of a spot starting and doesn't need a ton of hand holding.

Rex Grossman has been on our team for three years and that doesn't include any of the time Spurrier was head coach.:behead2:
 
I think what has been lost on many of those focused on having a veteran backup is the idead that we have to have the RIGHT kind of veteran.

Should it be a player like Grossman that fails to show discipline and ball security on the field? A guy whose fundamentals and footwork have been in question his entire career?

I think we need to go in another direction.

It's a shame the Redskins didn't go after Orton 2 years ago. He's the perfect back-up in my opinion. I hate that Dallas got him. As for our current situation, I'd almost rather we'd gone with Beck. Grossman, volatility and bad decision-making and all, is still a far more effective QB. But I'd rather have Beck's attitude, work ethic, and character (at least as I perceive it) in terms of helping RGIII adjust to the NFL, than whatever it is Grossman brings to the table. I'm not saying Rex is a bad guy - but whatever he has to 'teach' Griffin, I don't want any of it taught...
