Not sure how much stock to put in it, since it's written by a hateful guy who refers to the Skins as "one of the consistently worst run franchises", when Cooley himself goes out of his way to praise the team in his exit speech, despite all the losing years

He states, "no longer a Redskin for the time being".....possibly cryptic words that he may return for lesser money ?

This hurts me as much as Monk getting canned...

I understand the facts of the situation, but it still doesn't matter in my heart.

Today was one of the best days I've had in about 4 years... up until now.
 
Surprised by the emotional response to this but it's a nice tribute to the guy. I think it's fair to say most of us are as much a fan of Cooley 'the guy' as we are Cooley 'the player'. He hasn't been able to consistently contribute for awhile now and I think the team would've loved nothing more than for him to have come roaring back this year and given them a reason to keep him around.

The most distasteful part is that we didn't boot Fred Davis the last time he gave us a good reason instead of franchising him. I get that Davis has more speed and upside than Cooley at this point. But he's a zero in so many of the things we love about Cooley - smarts, humor, character, and selflessness. There's really no comparison.

It was probably time, but I really hate that Cooley only got a chance to sniff glory, and likely won't be a part of things if/when the Redskins finally really return to greatness.
 
I guess I am on a different wavelength. Chris was a good player and a fan favorite but to compare his departure to that of Monk or Green is I think stating the case too strongly.

I am not sure I would go that far either, but it is a subjective statement.
 
Cooley represents what we all craved for so long after the disaster of me players we signed or drafted. We watched the Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Stubblefat, Jeff George type players come through. We all wanted what we'd seen before, true Washington Redskin players. Guys who came in and left every single f***ing thing on the field and were also decent people off of it. Cooley brought us all that, maybe more so than any player recently atleast in my eyes. Chris Samuels is also another player in this category, Samuels just wasn't as funny.
 
Yes, my opinion only.

Two Hall of Famers who played here 13 and 20 years respectively vs. a solid performer that has been here for 8 but hurt much of the past 2.
 
I said it once and I'll say it again, we loved Cooley for the guy he is as much as for the player he is (or ever was). He may have been a great Redskin, but he's never been a truly great player. I'll miss the guy - he's been one of the most honest and frank NFL players you'll ever see.
 
While I'm certainly not going to place Chris Cooley in the same class as guys like Monk, Green, Jacoby, Grimm, etc., he's certainly been the closest thing to giving us pleasant reminders of what it means to be a "true" Redskin during his tenure here. I'm sure we would all agree that Chris' play and the way he carried himself made us all proud to be Redskins fans. On that note, it's quite interesting to think that it was Joe Gibbs who brought him here in the first place and moved up in the draft no less to snag him if memory serves me correct. Meanwhile, many of the other regimes that have been in Washington since Joe's first departure have repeatedly missed at bringing in a "Cooley type." I think it's fairly clear that Joe may have known a bit more than others regarding the type of players that fit the mold of true Redskins football.

Thank you Chris for your dedication towards this team. It has been a pleasure watching you wear our colours.
 
i'm not happy about this. i just can't find a way to be happy about it.

a guy i was seriously happy for the moment we got griffin - he finally had a qb that was worth a **** and a possibility to make meaningful playoff runs in the next 4-5 years. He's only 30.

i know logic goes counter to my feelings, but i don't care. just not the way i wanted to see this player leave the organization.
 
Yep T. This is a good thing. I know it in my mind, but my heart's not loving it yet. Partially because I realize this must be what it's like to be an Eagles' fan, getting rid of players before they pass their peak and detereorate before our eyes. Yuck.

I think it's a good move, but it still hurts a little.

And ya know, the fact that he's not bitter, and just the opposite, he says he believes in the direction they're going, just goes to prove what a class act he is....Especially, when you consider that many past Redskins have been dealt far more unfair cards by the Redskins staff, and went away to other teams, bitter and bitching - how many times that happened ? So many times, that it's sickening how little class most players have. (A-Pierce, C-Rogers, B-Lloyd, B-Mitch, Champ, Lavar, and on and on)
 
I never compared him to Monk. Next thing you know we have him being compared to Green and even some of the hogs in there too.:)

All I said was it hurt me as much as when Art was sent packing. Art should never have had to put on another uniform, and neither should Cooley in my opinion.

Boone said it as about as simple as it gets. It's the entire package, not just the stats or longevity.
 
As Boone said he will be missed, as much as for the person(ality) he is as the player he was. And it has been a while since we saw the best of him. I don't know how old that video is that Om posted, but what struck me is that if that was his heyday, it was a long time ago as most of those passes were thrown by Brunnell.
 
I've been busy for a day or so and Cooley's release is what I get when I come back? Sheesh. Well damn if that doesn't suck. I can't say I'm terribly shocked about it though. I got a bad feeling about him during OTA's (I think it was) when he still had a noticeable limp. That wasn't telling in and of itself, just a premonition I guess.

I think you said it pretty much perfectly. He was never the fastest or most athletic or most talented TE around but he sure was a heck of a lot of fun to watch on the field and off of it. I especially loved what I call the "Cooley limp leg" where a guy would hit him low and he'd sort of let one leg go limp and the other player would just slide off. That one was always good for a couple of extra yards.

Cooley was just a good solid, all around performer with a personality not unlike Riggins'. He'll definitely be missed.

Listening to some people talk like they're management, or something, is comical.
