That's not true at all. Precise route-running will do the trick, just look at Steve Largeant. He ran a 17 second 40, but was always open.
There's a stark difference between quickness and speed.

A 40 time defines speed, not quickness.

"Precise Route-Running" which involves numerous "cuts", surely is not comparable to a guy running a perfectly straight line, non-stop for 40 yards.

Fred Davis and Niles Paul give us speed and playmaking ability at TE.

The third TE here has to be a blocker first and that was more Paulsen than Cooley.

Combined with the fact that Niles Paul plays Special Teams, this really IS the bottom line. I just didn't expect it this soon given that Young isn't totally healthy. Money likely played a part as well, thanks to ****head Mara, but I think the FO has enough respect for Chris that they let him decide his fate instead of trying to squeeze out a late round pick for him.

Being that type of organization and having that known around the league is worth more than any late round pick.

If this was "just a player" with whatever name, we would've been calling for his release based on the last two seasons. We would be saying that he is taking up a roster spot and blah, blah, blah. I have several Cooley jerseys (along with several signed caps and pics) and he will always be a favorite, but it is time to move on.

That being said...

He will save $3.8 mil against the cap this year. My guess is that we are making these moves to restructure three of four contracts with front-loading and save on next year's cap.

Time catches us all. If I had my way, Riggo would still be taking handoffs. Thanks for the memories Chris!

so not only does that leave Davis as the undisputed starter, but also now makes Davis the Senior Redskin on offense ?

And tie him with Fletcher for the most current years as a Redskin, on both sides of the ball, at just 5 years in DC ?

I totally got choked up watching that, Lanky! Any chance we can immediately replace Lavar with Cooley on the "10 for 80" list? ;)

Oops, how'd I forget Moss, SO.

And who knows, he may be gone, too. If Cooley isn't safe, then Moss may not be.
Surely would prefer to see him stay, but at this point wouldn't be surprised to see him cut either. Looks like the youth movement is in full swing.

And even though he was one of the biggest Dallas-haters on the team, why do I get this uneasy, unexplainable feeling that Dallas might sign him ?

Because they do need a Tight End.

But hopefully the Ravens need one also and it would leave him close to home so hopefully that happens for him.

Sad day. Really sad day. I am taking this a lot harder than I thought I would.

I am going to go ahead and tell myself that you are right, BB. And I am going to connect the dots in my head and tell myself the main reason we cut Cooley is to save cap money for next year. So **** you, Mara and Goodell. Sideways. With a bat. **** you both.

Bye Chris. You will always be a Skin to me. You magnificent bastard.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but having watched Chris struggle physically the last year, and not look particularly mobile or dynamic this preseason, I can't say it's a shock they'd let him go. We just don't have the luxury of keeping guys like that--veteran, expensive--on the roster. Not while trying to build a fast, dynamic young team for RG3.

That they let him go NOW says to me it's so he has a chance to catch on elsewhere. If they'd waited until final cuts, it would be much harder for him to find a home. I'd like to think the team is being classy in that regard.

And on a purely practical note....if there is cap space freed up for possible use shoring up the OL, that's not something to turn a blind eye to either. Haven't done the math on that though, so it may be wishful thinking.

Have to separate the emotional attachment for a player who has, in the past, been a favorite. Cooley hasn't been Cooley on the field for a while, and I can't say I had or have any real hopes that he will be Cooley again elsewhere. I hope so though. As long as it's outside the NFCE.

Classy my ass. You'll never convince me Shamaham didn't know he would make this move weeks ago. If not months.

He's a lying SOB if he says otherwise.

Should've done it June 1st. Same cap savings, with more time for Chris to shop around. Now he has to shop himself in a market short on time. Like last season after the lockout.

**** Mike Shamaham!!!

HTTR!!!

Oh, and Mara and the Giants will have a new tight end. Hows that for justice?

Oh, and don't we have a picture of Cooley in a Redskins uniform we could use, instead of them Good Humor Abortion ones?

Apparently Shanahan was going to cut him before preseason, but he asked for a chance to win his job back. So Shanahan gave him the three preseason games and camp, out of respect. That's the rumor, anyway.

Who started that rumor, Mrs. Shanahan?
