ESPN: Shanahan was ready to quit in '12

I'd give Shanny a 3 year extension by the close of business tomorrow.

Let everyone know that I've got his back and any player bypassing the coach's office to head upstairs does so at their peril.

Then, I 'd turn to the local press and tell 'em to deal with it.

Skin that smokewagon and see what happens.

While I understand what you're going for there, I also see that as being a "cutting off your nose to spite your face" kind of move. Wouldn't improve the team, would just be something to do to lay down the law. The one thing the cavalcade of garbage issued over the past few days has proven is that Shanahan's time is done here, and we should be looking at the future without him.

There can be other ways to prove that point, and much of what we're hearing (especially the deeper the pile gets) is that the Griffin/Snyder relationship hasn't been what some of Snyder's relationships in the past were.

I'm serious.

You can't mismanage a roster for the better part of 15 years, saddle your incoming coach with two albatross contracts (Hall,Fatso) and expect it to turnaround THAT quick.

Especially when your 36 million in the hole talent wise and your QB is coming off major surgery.

As an owner, you have to have more patience than that.

Snyder knows how the media is here. He needs to have thicker skins than that and let it roll off his back.

Don't let off the gas now.......

That could happen with the right coach. But that's just such a huge stretch.

To do that, Snyder would have to convince himself that Shanahan actually knows what a WR coach looks like.

That he knows what a ST coach looks like.

That Slowick should be on any team, in any position.

That Shanahan wouldn't overpay for another Morgan. That he wouldn't draft another LeRibeus.

That he wasn't in the early stages of dementia.

After the way I saw Shanahan handle the media today, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him coaching this team next year. He stumbled a little bit, but one quote I think was telling was when he said Dan would make the ultimate decision on which direction the Redskins would take. But before he said that, he said Dan and he would sit down and discuss things and they would come up with a decision...then corrected himself and said it was Dan's decision.

I am so very sick and tired of the drama in DC!!!

Here's what I'm trying to get at....

Alot of coaches' tenure here basically ends with the inmates running the asylum and the local press encouraging the blood bath.

Why not tell both to go eat cake?

Last season showed me, Mike and Kyle can coach. Call it gimmick offense, whatever but we won. That's the job, right? To win?

Get the cap hit back.

Fill some holes with some much needed talent, try to improve the staff.

Pull your boot straps up and march on.

We've seen far worse here.

Coming off an NFC East title, a cap hit and qb injury have hit home and put us in a bad spot...

You want to cut and run now??

How many seasons you give the next staff? Two? Three?

I can see it now:

Dec.2017 ESPN Chris Mortensen reports that league sources tell him that Pierre Garcon had a heated exchange with Head Coach Pepper Rodgers after Monday Night's blowout in Dallas.....

Boswell: We don't deserve anymore Pepper

Around and around and around...........

I'd love to have consistency at coaching, and yes Mike was saddled with a lot of crap, but he's handled so much of it poorly. I just don't know.

If it's done right, that's all it would take. I understand what you're saying, I just don't trust Shanahan to build this team. Coaching...sure. Building? NO!

If we had never suffered the Cap Penalty, I believe we'd be a whole hell of alot closer to being a competitive club than where we sit right now.

Heck, Griffin may not have even suffered injury last season if we'd have had the money to spend on protection.......

They signed receivers and Fletcher, Merriweather, etc last year and had several players restructure to do it. Who is to say they'd have gone after any linemen when they'd likely have offered more for Royal if they had another 5mil?

whose fault is the penalty? if shanny wasnt such an ego driven asstard, he would have cut our losses and traded haynesworth, instead he had to show everyone who was boss. yes its mara and rooney who are the dickheads in this, but it tracks back to shannahan, and no I dont think he deserves any more chances.

They had money to spend on OL help, they spent it on Josh Morgan.

Or....instead of a lineman, he might draft Kirk Cousins.

You weren't even registered here when he was hired. On other message boards there were alot (not even close to the majority) of us who were against Shanahan being hired based on him having this exact same setup in Denver and failing for a decade. I remember all the way back to when Gibbs was still here it being mentioned that Snyder would LOVE to get shanahan as his next coach, and I was pissed at the idea because to me Shanahan is the most overrated coach in the NFL. He walked into a top 5 roster in the NFL, they added Terrell Davis, Neil Smith and McCaffery and 2-3 others and won 2 Super Bowls. As soon as Elway retired and Davis went gimp, it was back to .500ish ball except for 2005 when they actually won a playoff game.

you might want to check your facts there buddy. I was definately here, try the search function, its your friend

IMO, he did the best anyone could've done when a crap sandwich was dropped in his lap.

BTW, they did get compensation out of New England for him and now he's out of the league.

Danny and Vinny spent the better part of a decade trashing this roster and I don't think anyone turns that around on a dime, like alot of Redskins fans think.

Ax has said this like 10 times, and you guy still don't get it. Haynesworth's guaranteed money was dead money against the skins cap - thanks to Cerrato and Snyder.

Trading him would not have alleviated it. If you wanted him traded to get something in return, fine, but using it to blame Shanahan for the cap penalty just means you don't understand how the salary cap works.

No! It means you obviously don't understand cause and effect! Let's try this again since you seem to have missed it last time:

A - Shanahan was left with a crap sandwich

+

b- He tried to dump crap sandwich in an "uncapped" year

=

c - NFL delivers Cap Penalty

If he simply maneuvers the money owed Fat Al without trying to dump it, we have no penalty!

No one is denying the cluster left for Shanahan nor is anyone excusing Cerrato like you want to suggest, but you're inability to see Shanahan's culpability in this is remarkable! He was dealt a shit hand and played it to the river holding ace rags chasing a pair. Then, out of position...he tried to bluff the pot and got caught...losing valuable Free Agents in the process.

The cap space was allocated to haynesworth by cerrato and snyder. The only way to get it back was to negotiate a trade with someone that included the transfer of the guaranteed money, or to convince haynesworth to renegotiate it out of the contract.

A general trade would not have alleviated the cap hit, and in fact would have accelerated the remainder to that year.

How does he simply maneuver the money? It was owed to Haynesworth via contract. It was guaranteed money. The option was to have it count as dead money against the cap or the cap penalty via dumping it (trying to avoid the dead money hit). The net/net of it all, courtesy of the cap penalty, is the same result.

It's simple.

What you keep ignoring is that the penalty was a result of Shanahan's actions.
