That is our track record. And it won’t surprise me if it happens again. Thing is, you can’t get value for a player if you wait until he has none, or if you actively undermine it by making it clear he’s not part of your future plans.
There are certainly guys who have been solid players, like Kerrigan who, if you keep them a few years past their prime, it’s not a franchise disaster. But what we don’t realize, because we never operate like a tough business where difficult decisions have to be made, is that doing so gives you limited draft picks. People will make sarcastic comments diminishing 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks. But when you stockpile picks, that gives you the chance to find those hidden gemS. Even the Redskins have found them over the years once in awhile. When you chronically have minimum picks because you never move players while they still have value, Or give away late picks to sweeten the pot to get a mid-career FA, the chances of landing those hidden gems is greatly diminished.
When it comes to Kerrigan, he’s a good player. But he’s on the downside of his career, not part of the future, and it’s not like we’ve been to a bunch of playoff games or even had winning seasons because of him. I’d much prefer we have a fire sale for most anyone on the wrong side of 30 and load up for the future.
