"I think at this point in his career, to ask him to go out there and play 50 snaps is unrealistic," Del Rio said. "But he certainly is impactful in the snaps that he's given."

Kerrigan's dip in snaps is not so much an indictment on the pass rusher himself. Rather, it's a testament to how deep the Burgundy and Gold's defensive front is, led by Sweat and No. 2 overall pick Chase Young.

I think this helps us sign him again next year to a good deal that works for everyone. It sounds like he knows his role as a back up, and is comfortable coming in and wreaking havoc. I have made no attempt to hide the fact that I want him to retire here, and I think the coaches speaking as well as him being him helps make that a real possibility.

"I always talk about what a pro he is because of the way he prepares and the way he conducts himself and the teammate he is and all those kinds of things because it’s an example of what you want," Del Rio said

Well, even at 32 and declining somewhat, having someone as good as Kerrigan as a backup/depth is a great thing. If they keep him it will be mostly because of the sentiments above

4 sacks and only one behind our team leader isn't a bad stat, either. He still produces at a high level when out there.

Considering Everson Griffin went for a conditional 6th, and Carlos Dunlap went for a 6th + an OLineman, i dont see us getting more than a 6th for him

If we can sign him to a reasonable 2 year deal/3rd year voidable I'm on board but I can't see paying him anywhere close to his current salary

I dont even think he is considering asking for $10mil per year as a backup. Nobody does that and is being realistic.

He is playing out the salary he earned, for sure.

Not complaining about his current salary by any means but one thing we cannot do is overpay for players on the decline like we have done soooo many times. The question is what is he worth and what does he think he's worth? With an anticipated salary cap decrease and youngin's getting close to getting paid, gonna have to sharpen that pencil in the FO to make the math work.

I think he works in our favor there. Like Mike has said... he kind of knows his role. I dont think hes looking for a huge payday. He may even like this role and his 'cost' is lower in this scenario

I know he’s a good guy, but just curious what you all are basing the idea he will take a ‘backup’ contract on? This will probably be his last contract if if he and his agent think he can get starter money elsewhere, do you all really think he won’t seriously consider that. I understand he has stated previously he wants to finish his career here, but if he feels he’s going to make significantly less here than he could elsewhere, that is not certain. What am I missing?

I think if they want him to end his career here, they are almost going to have to overpay.

I dont have a quote to share but locally have had more than 1 beat reporter suggest that Kerrigan has made it known that wants to stay here, and that he would essentially be willing to give a hometown discount to make that happen. That Kerrigan and his wife are not shy that this is where they want to stay

Yeah but what is a "hometown" discount to him - 6 mil a year or 4 or whatever and at what duration

Welk considering we wont be able to pay everyone, being able to pay Kerrigan at 5 mil a year for the next 3 gives you value...

I am not sure why people think he wants some huge amount of money. He's never been flashy, he has never demanded huge contracts, and he likes it here.

all indications from the man himself in his actions are that he would take a reduced rate to retire where he has a family and his career.

Kerrigan has yet to speak on his role, we are under the assumption based on Del Rio's and Rivera's comments that he is comfortable as a backup, however their statements are that he understands his role. That could be understands where he's at in his career or understands where he's at with the Redskins. Two totally different things.

yet nothing he has ever stated or done with his career dictates he is ever looking for a big contract. he didn't have bad negotiations or make ridiculous demands that ended with him holding out.

Kerrigan is just going with the flow.

seems like all the worries over money and demands are more from fans than him.

"It sounded like talks were progressing pretty well," said Kerrigan, the host of the Leukemia Golf Classic at Lansdowne Resort Monday. "It'll happen as it happens. But of course it's in the back of your mind because it's a big deal. It's a big thing that could happen. Hopefully we get that done."

Doesn't even sound like he was concerned at all from the looks of it.

He’s been getting starter money his entire career - of course he’s had no issue :) If they offer him a backup salary and some other team is willing to bring him in as a starter with requisite pay, I don’t think it’s an absolute given he stays. If they really value him and want to keep him they may have to pay him more than a typical backup would make.

If they aren’t willing to do that, quite possible he agrees to start for another team. Hopefully they already know where he stands and are making his agent aware of what they are thinking because that would be the worst case scenario - not sign him to a final contract AND not trade him.

The dynamic of the defensive line has changed over the years. A rotational system warrants paying a '3rd string' guy more money because they're value goes beyond the depth chart level. He's not going to be paid backup money, because he's not a backup. He's going to be paid rotational DE pass rushing specialist money.

This is his current deal

The first 3 years of this deal with a lesser signing bonus is more than fair for both parties. The prorated bonus on this deal totaled $16m. Drop that to $9m, pay it across 3 years. Pay a base of $1.5m in 2021 (with the bonus he see's $11.5m in 2021), $3.5m in year 2, and $5.5 in year 3, then his cap numbers are 2020-$4.5m / 2021 - $6.5m / 2022 - $8.5m. The cap will continue to go up AFTER 2021 because of Covid, so the back half of this deal does not hurt at all. I don't think these numbers are crazy for him or for the team.

For comparison sake, this is Mario Addison in Buffalo, he signed this deal this year

I trust the team to make the right call either way and I agree it sounds more like they plan to keep him than not. But I do think it will depend on what they are willing to offer. He’s a football player likely heading o to his last contract, as a backup (rotational or not, he’s going to be a backup and as SO pointed out, none of us knows if that’s an issue for him or not - because he’s never had to embrace that previously. Maybe it works out, but it is a maybe.

maybe he is looking forward to taking it easy. hes been the sole focal point on that DL for so long maybe its nice for him to rest.

none of us do know. we just have two very different sides of the fence we sit on regarding how he handles things.
