Just about every Redskins player I asked could remember the first time he saw Banks.

"I couldn't figure out who the little kid was on the team, to be honest with you," Adam Carriker said. "I see this little guy out there, I don't know what he plays, I don't know what he does, I don't know who he is, I just see this little guy out there. I'm being serious."

"I actually saw him while I was watching the combine, and it had his weight up there," Anthony Armstrong told me. "I think it said 149 pounds. I was like, that must be a typo. Can't be no way that there's somebody at the combine who's 149. They tell me I'm too small, and this guy's 149 pounds?"


"I got on the bus at the hotel and I'm like, this guy has to be really fast," Vonnie Holliday said.

"I mean, he's definitely smaller than even some of the small guys that make it in this league," punter Josh Bidwell said.

It's never a bad thing to have a couple of guys on the team who have a chip on their shoulder about proving that they belong. He seems to have already gotten the respect of his teammates.
 
In this case more a microchip.
 
Brandon Banks: FG blocker?

Brandon Banks may be the single most electrifying player the Redskins have had in years. Even in the relatively staid environment of the press box, there's a noticeable buzz when he heads back to return a punt; today, when he added kickoff returns to his repertoire, those generated the same kind of excitement.

In fact, Banks is exciting enough that I was shocked by how unremarkable his final stats appeared: three punt returns for 47 yards, with a long of 30, and two kickoff returns for 33 yards. This completely fails to convey how much Banks appeared to tilt the field, and how valuable some of those yards were. (It also fails to convey the 62 yards he DIDN'T get on a kickoff return that was negated by a holding penalty, which may be part of what's skewing my memories.)

And it wasn't just the media and fans that noticed.

"Santana [Moss] told me I kinda grew up today," Banks said, "but, you know, I feel good out there, and I feel like any time I touch the ball, I could go the distance."

But that part of his skillset has been known at least since preseason. What was more surprising was how close Banks came to blocking field goals. He lined up on the end for Mason Crosby's last three field goal attempts and used his ridiculous speed to come around the side and get within split seconds of the ball on two of those.

Didn't notice him on FG's. One thing I did notice is when he gets the ball he seems to be in one gear and everyone else appears to be in slow motion. Seeing him in person gives me a different appreciation of his speed. The kid if fun to watch.
 
To paraphrase a Me O line, I loves me some BB. :)

The fumbling thing and the risk to his personal safety scare the hell out of me though, and probably always will. However I think he helps us solve more than a few problems. Obviously he helps our field position with returns but for short periods he could provide depth for Moss. I also think he could be our version of Desean Jackson-just a few plays a game though. Then again I thought Jackson would be good for a while until he took a few shots and got hurt. Thing is, he's so fast and shifty he's not hit hard very often and it might play out that way for BB as well.

The field goal blocking specialist thing was just sick! I have to think that even if he doesn't actually block it, the extra pressure of needing to get the kick off just a beat faster had to have affected their kicker. As with using him on offense for a few plays, using him on the outside on FGs gives the opposition one more thing to worry about/scheme for and might also free someone else in the process.

I will say one thing, I wondered why they put Simpson back in there after Banks had run back a decent return on a kick off. After going through my images I caught this:

Not to mention, he did catch it close to the sideline when it looked like it might go out of bounds. So, there is still concern about a big hit, his decision making and his ability to hold onto the ball, but it sure was exciting.

I wondered about fielding that kickoff too. But then you think about it, the ball could just as easily bounce further into the field and we could be stuck deep into our own territory. So I think his decision was correct.

The fumbling is another issue, however.
 
Interestingly I never saw this fumble. Did it go out of bounds? Danny Smith or someone will have to work with him regarding holding on to the ball.

It did go out of bounds. He took a good hit but didn't hold on. The run in this situation was a great example of what the kid has. He caught it near the sideline (I agree Alaskan, it could have dribbled down the sideline as you suggest) and weaved through heavy traffic to gain 15-20 yards.

Anyway...

Banks is an exciting player so far. Let's hope it continues and and hope the fumblitis disease will be cured.
