Sorry, Conn just being straight up and always am, I don't get it. LOL

lol just a popular meme from around ten years ago, “hydrogen bomb vs. coughing baby”, for use when you two things are compared of extremely different quality levels lol. You posted “looks like McDaniel or Blough” and I just thought it fit

Could very well be and might explain canning Bobby Johnson while keeping other staff, and bringing in Wells for an "OC" interview

It would be a real roll of the dice for DQ, ballsy (crazy) since his future rests heavily on his 2 new coordinator selections
KDawg I posted in another thread that Asst. GM Newmark knows about Blough as he was in Detroit as a backup QB. So maybe. Dallas won't let Wells come to DC as an OL coach as it wouldn't be a promotion according to what is being said. Another thing of interest is there are rumors that Tampa might be a landing place for McDaniel (I hope not) as it's not far from home for McDaniel to go from Miami to Tampa vs. DC Metro.

Thanks. :) I try to stay up on things. I'm almost 62. Not over the hill be I've climbed some rungs so to speak. LOL

Higskin Ya know two things that standout here.

1. McDaniel, I think ends up here. After researching his history with DQ it appears that DQ helped him from alcohol abuse and straightened his life up along with coaching with him and knowing him almost like family for years.

2. Blough has established a bother like relationship with JD. With KK gone and people around the league talking about him highly as the possible next Ben Johnson. What I thought was a shot in the dark may not be.

No such thing as alcohol abuse 😁

Mike McDaniel was part of that staff too.

He would be a great fit here. He has good history with AP and DQ, the roster suits his scheme, and it sure seems he and Jayden would be simpatico. I would be surprised if he doesn’t have head coaching opportunities though.

Don’t know about Blough or other candidates, so I would have to wait and see if it ends up being one of them.

The logical fallacy with Blough is, if he does kill it next year, he is probably getting a HC job somewhere else. Can we really bring in other really promising minds to backfill him in that event?

On the other hand, McDaniel can probably bring Frank Smith and/or Bobby Slowik with him and those guys are plausible candidates to step in if McDaniel were to leave for a HC job.

Respected minds like McVay, Shanahan and McDaniel are magnets for these high end young assistants. For example, Scheelhasse left a $750k a year OC job with Iowa State to likely take less money to become a passing game specialist with the Rams. Who does that to work under Blough?

Idk man, Keim isn’t much a click-baiting artist.

On a side note, after looking at the landscape - I’m a little concerned McDaniel could end up with another HC gig. I didn’t even realize that 25% of the league is looking for a new head coach. Phew.

Yeah Keim is the opposite of click bait. It stuns me how much he has the scoop yet puts it out so gingerly and someone else later says the same thing but definitively and that other person gets the credit.

I did a zoom he once volunteered to do for fans who followed him on twitter, and loi he goes look when he says things like they might be interested in a running back in the draft in the style of Antonio Gibson. He actually means they are looking specifically at Gibson. But he doesn't want to blow up his source so he doesn't say it definitiely.

The dude was basically among other things calling Rivera's draft round by round in advance.

Some said hey with this regime, he will lose his sources and know nothing. It didn't happen. Among other things I recall all the people making fun of how Keim said they prefer Jayden Daniels, not Drake Maye at #2, he was goofed on that he was clueless on it., When he said they are serious about Dan Quinn, and said so early on, as the coaching hire, also goofed on. He had the Ben Johnson interviews didn't click well before Schefter made a federal case about it. On and on and on.

So in short, he hates spitballing. Even if he makes points so broadly that it comes off that way. So Blough and McDaniel are serious contenders. Keim doesn't throw out names for no reason.

He basically went through his process when reporting on the team yesterday after Schultz report. He doesn't put anything out that's not verified in triplicate, basically. It sounded like he was calling Schultz full of shit without saying he was he's full of shit.

He did the same thing, only much more bluntly with the Belichick rumors two years ago.

You see, I want that problem. That's a great problem to have. You don't want to settle for some mediocre for the sake of consistency.

If you think Blough might be the next great. Get him. If you think he's not or not yet ready then move on, but don't reject someone because you think he might be too good to stay.

Keim's podcast this morning

A. Blough "definitelty" a possibility

B. They might move quick on this if they decide they are sold because they could lose him to Detriot otherwise

C. Risky since he never called plays. Quinn didn't want to risk trusting LaFleur to call plays for the first time when Kyle left in Atlanta, that burned him, and that lesson might have stuck with him.

D. McDaniel possible, too. Him being in potentially HC demand though can delay the proccess, would they wait if they get sold on Blough?

E. Hasn't heard so far yet of any interest in Daboll in spite of the reports otherwise

F. Defensive coordinator might take longer. Interest in Graham genuine. He thinks Ulbrich ultimately will be let go from Atlanta and some interest in him, too. Genuine interest in Raheem Morris and he will do HC interviews, Keim suspects he doesn't get a HC job.

Just on an aside though I've been down on Raheem Morris, digesting it some more, I don't think he sucks. I think he's a mediocre X's and O's guy, contrast to Whitt sucking at it, and an A level energy-motivator guy whereas Whitt struck me meh as a motivator and low energy including the camp practice I watched. I do think he'd be fine. But I just hate that so many of our HC's don't swing for the fences at this position, he'd be IMO another example of it, but his reputation is better than most of the clowns that have been here.

Ref Blough, I don't remember who said it, maybe someone on NFL Live but they made a good point. Every team is looking for the next assistant off the Shanahan, McVay, etc tree and hiring guys without actually knowing them but based just on that affiliation. A lot of those guys don't work out. There appears to be a lot of strong interest from Campbell and I'd imagine if KK gets a HC job, maybe there too.

If Quinn knows Blough's work can translate and promotes him as OC, then you hope he knows enough/feels what the league seems to feel about Blough

I think the succession plan with Kliff was Tavita Pritchard. Once he got the Stanford gig, they were left a bit high and dry. Listening to Mark Bullock on Standig podcast, he complained that Quinn was very worried about having a succession plan in place for OC and now he is right back where he was in Atlanta with no OC and no legitimate heir apparent in house.

They don’t want the same scheme, that much is clear now from the mutual release of Kliff. Succession is great for maintaining scheme.

They clearly decided they wanted some changes that Kliff didn’t want to make. That is why I wonder if Blough would work out. I think Blough would be a mistake and don’t trust DQ interview process to figure that out. Maybe this being “the” number one issue, maybe DQ asks it directly.

Jayden has great potential but he can’t play hero as much as he has realistically.

If they roll the dice with Blough, I'd like to see a case where he is promoted to OC, but maybe you let Brian Johnson start the year as play caller. Have them collaborate on the game plan, and try to ease him into play calling.

I don't know enough about Blough to say whether this is a good move or not.... but it will hurt to let another McVay, KOC, McDaniels, etc. walk out the door and see success elsewhere while our offense flounders!

McDaniel is head and shoulders above everyone else in seeming fit. Hard to tell but that is how it seems, regardless of how JD feels.

I am not sure I trust this regime to get their guy.

Maybe he wants to be a HC but with Detroit reportedly contacting him about OC hopefully he has had contact from us too. Can’t be last to pick up the phone.

I’m sure Blough is a really smart guy and I’m sure he does have that rep around the league of “keep an eye on this dude”. But he was the ASSISTANT QB coach until like a month ago, at 30. Not for very long, either. He’s never even had it as part of his job description to design plays, although he’s helped install them (and done it as a player). We obviously can’t know, maybe this dude is secretly a generational genius, but I really doubt it. He’s never done any part of the OC job, never mind actually calling the damn plays. He’s never even spent a whole season as an entire position coach, he was an assistant to an assistant until recently!

I’m sorry but this would scream “no one wants to work for a perceived lame duck staff under Quinn”. (And it would definitely imply McDaniel had a better opportunity or a HC offer, which is understandable if so)

Choosing Blough without a very thorough search because he’ll keep Kliff’s terminology and because he’s Daniels’ binky would be a huge problem to me. And the exact example of why a guy like Quinn can just never get out of his own way. It would be a very weird mix of risky AND conservative for that reason. Blough has very little experience, and most of the experience he does have is in the scheme we seemingly want to get away from before it’s too late into Daniels’ career. I’ll repeat something I said the other day: if I wasn’t happy with Kliff, why would I want Kliff’s microwaved leftovers being served by someone who’s not even an expert in the scheme? Because he’ll run the ball a little more? He’s entirely green, games could get away from him in new and exciting ways we have never even thought of. This feels like the perfect way to waste another year of Daniels in an even more simplified version of Kliff’s scheme, with a few wrinkles and more attempts at ball control until things start to spiral and Blough doesn’t know how to fix it. Because someone handed a rocket launcher to a toddler.

As to Blough. I am not excited or down on it, don't know. He learned under Ben Johnson and Kliff.

I do recall hardly anyone at ES was excited about McVay when he was appointed coordinator but not down on him either. But at a minimum it wasn't an exciting hire at the time. More excitement about Kyle, but it was mixed, and people were down on him fast.

I think its a bit of a roll of the dice from Quinn in an important season for him. But the upside is also big considering it would be an easier transition for Jayden and heck you look good when you find the next big coordinator.

I still prefer McDaniel but wouldn't hate Blough.

In my circle of fan friends who talk football quite a lot, that old circle of people in 2013 Redskins had gained cred by that time (McVay). So when he left there was some consternation and it was another Snyder move on not recognizing something clear.

Blough doesn’t have that feeling.

However he did - widely reported I think - design at least one big play, the winning play to Crowder against Eagles (2024). If he truly learned under Ben Johnson (I mean really learned) that would be great.

The issue here really is less Blough himself and the interviewer. It is hard to trust DQ to find the right person at this point. I agree with what I understand DQ wants but frankly I think he wanted it before and didn’t hire it. So I question his ability to get it this time.
