And I’ll go one step further and say that this is the rare situation where you could potentially have a succession plan, if the franchise is successful. Like Bruce Arians —> Todd Bowles, these two are close and have been for years. And McDaniel is a specific off duck who needs a specific relationship in an org to get that opportunity ever again, likely. Because other teams will wait a few beats before giving a guy as unconventional as McDaniel a shot as a HC again, if ever.
And hey, he may not be HC material, even after more growth and development as a man and coach. So this post may be pointless. But I’m simply saying this is the rare, rare situation where technically the door could be open to a handoff down the road if things go well and we experience team success together. Which, not having your offensive play caller genius hired away from your franchise QB is the main reason most people want an offensive HC long term. So it’s at least a potential silver lining to the defensive HC situation we’re currently in.
Again, not something I’m weighting heavily or projecting as totally realistic in the future. Simply a low probability possibility if everything else goes right, that most franchises would have at zero percent. An interesting side note to keep in mind at most, right now.
Daniels had a great relationship with Kliff. He could have the same with McDaniel, who majors in empathy and communication and effort. He fixed Tua mentally like a sports psychologist, and then built him into a functional NFL QB deserving of a huge contract before it all fell apart.
