Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

Be super cool if we could bring this across the finish line with Flores as DC.
It would beyond cool. Securing him would be bigger IMO than any players they can sign in FA. game changer. But feels too good to be true.

I think Flores interviewing for a bunch of DC jobs has a really, really simple explanation. He wants to get face time with as many teams as he can so people can get to know him and build a positive network through the lawsuit stuff.

It’s actually brilliant. And I’m sure many teams are going to come away impressed - which will help him in the next HC cycle.

There are so many mediocre coordinators and head coaches out there that Flores definitely has a case.

It's not impossible that getting the DC DC job could be attractive for an unexpected reason.

The team was so bad this year that the defense is bound to be better next year. Also, the team was partially so bad because it lost its top four defensive ends, top two corners, and its top safety for pretty much the entire year. Given the expectation that there should be a better roster AND given the understanding that the D was significantly better (they improved from awful to bad once Quinn took over play calling and you might even make an argument for below average despite all the guys still shelved with injuries) that the new DC is bound to look great. Thus, even though it feels contradictory, DC could be a good springboard for a DC.

Flores already has a DC job.

But the Vikings want him back. So fairly irrelevant technicality

Then why is he out there interviewing for it?

If he was dead set on not making a lateral move, why open the door? I'm not even suggesting that we would be the destination, but I also think there's some level of smoke that he would be ok being a DC somewhere other than Minnesota in 2026.

As I mentioned above - 1) just in case there is a better opportunity (I’d be SHOCKED if he views this as a better opportunity) and 2) networking.

so we're saying the same thing....

it's not irrelevant that Minnesota has said they want him back, he's clearly willing to listen.... can't hurt to ask him and see what he thinks a 'better opportunity' may be.

Do you know that you’re responding to me in response to someone saying that taking a DC job could be a stepping stone?

It’s totally irrelevant to the point I was making.

AH... my bad, i guess i missed the point of it being a 'springboard.'

Up until he started taking interviews for coordinator positions maybe but your theory is just a theory.
I stated earlier that my money is on him either getting a head coaching position or going back to Minnesota but these are all unusual circumstances and I wouldn't take anything off table including him taking another coordinator position somewhere else.

"The way that we live is not for everybody, okay? Because we're gonna run and put our bodies on people in a violent manner. And so, we're gonna get that play style right first, right?“ Joe Whitt jr.

He did say put bodies on people, but not wrap them up and tackle them. Guess he wasn’t wrong

God this is so embarrassing

The way Quan Martin "put bodies on people" made ME want to be violent, does that count?

I was thinking back to how physical Williams defenses were here. I want that aggressive, physical, angry defense again. I feel like that's Graham or Gannon. I have no delusions about actually getting Flores

The DC hire is the one I am absolutely most interested in this whole offseason. Whoever it is will need to offset the low experience offensive staff and contend with Quinn.

Gannon would be a good get but can serve as a “threat” to Quinn.

I’m almost uninterested in a DC that wants to be a HC IF the intent is to potentially hire them in the case Quinn is let go. Our next HC needs to be an offensive guy.

If the intent is just to hire a DC and we can get a Gannon that’s a good move.

Ulbrich is still my number 1. If like Flores, but I just don’t see it here.

Morris would be a very medium hire.

Graham or Dennard would be okay hires, I think.

I think this hire sets the tone for the rest of this offseason.
