Dan Quinn hired as HC of Commanders

Hey - great to see you! I know we would value your commentary given you do this stuff for a living. Welcome back and keep the thoughts going 
I gave Quinn a B grade in terms of the hire.
Who did we lose out on? MacDonald seems to be the only guy by all accounts who we had strong interest in and chose somebody else over us. On top of that, he is a first year head coach who very recently added Leslie Frazier on his staff as an Assistant Coach to almost serve in an advisory type of role. I keep saying it - the Washington job has about 30 years of ineptitude to unpack, and might not be the type of job for a first time head coach to take on at this juncture. Quinn has been around the block and seemingly should be able to handle it like a pro and should get us on our feet at the very least. Let's face it - coming off 4-13 with massive holes on the roster, that has to be the goal right now too. I think too many people had visions of bringing in a guy who would be married to a rookie QB draftee for the next 12 years and would start pumping out Lombardi's like it is nobody's business - that is an unreasonable goal for the immediate future. We need a level of professionalism, accountability, and work ethic reestablished within the building and Quinn moves us closer towards these types of goals. While he seemingly will be tasked with a similar job to what Rivera had on his plate when he first stepped into the building, I don't think it is a Ron 2.0 hire. Rivera was coming off being fired and floundering in his most recent HC stint. To his credit, Quinn has built himself back up in this league, having reshaped Dallas' defense. I think that counts for something. It shows the guy can re-evaluate, adapt, and take the necessary steps towards bettering himself as a coach. There is nothing worse than doing the same thing over and over again and hoping to get different results. In some regards, that's what we got from Rivera. Bringing a bombshell home to mom and dad is nice, but when you find out she can't cook toast, things aren't as rosy anymore. In Quinn, I think we are getting someone who can cook a damn good meal, take care of the kids, and is easy on the eyes as well. I am not saying Quinn is easy on the eyes, but I think you catch my drift...
Leadership, relationships, Xs and Os. Quinn checks all the boxes Peters referenced in the press conference and I think he is a well-rounded pro coach to have around. We could have done A LOT worse.

I think the grades would've been a lot lower the day of/after the news hit. But stepping back and putting aside previous hopes/expectations, we could do a lot worse. There's a lot to like about Dan Quinn. 'B' for me.

I think when it became apparent that Washington didn't 'lose' out on Ben Johnson or Slowik because they were just not ready to become head coaches, and you were left to look at the available candidates Quinn looked pretty good.
I like Raheem Morris' ability like Quinn to rally players and have them perform at 100% and like Quinn he was DC on a Super Bowl winner.
But like Quinn he also didn't fare that well in his first stint as a head coach.

I am convinced that the brain trust truly did not have a locked-in candidate. They let the candidates speak during zoom calls and let that settle as they took the next step. Remember, any good interview process starts with a checklist that was agreed upon that each candidate needs to check off to take the next step forward. You absolutely never let emotion or propaganda move you to the next logical step. Stay the process so you can be consistent towards your agreed upon goal. Have faith you put a group of smart people around you to help you narrow down and then select the 'correct' one.

This would be a huge decision to make and its why I think a bit of emotion was used in pulling the trigger while they were in the air. However, there are alot of moving parts and heavy decsions to be made by the Commanders with this as well so in the end, I would be appreciative of knowing ASAP that someone was off the board. Timetables matter and I am sure that allowed the brain trust to readjust their board and make any changes to their checklist before they moved forward with any candidate.
Had they not been flying in to also interview the DC, then I would tell you he made a huge mistake towards the coaching fraternity.

I think what it shows most of all is that he wasn't ready.

If Ben Johnson is sitting there trying to convince himself he should or should not interview for a job, that's a clear sign he's not ready.
Guys like Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay did not blink.
