I laughed; but while Marty's weird need to "correct" DG rankled me, I do still think his 8-8 that year would have set a good franchise on a really good path, because it was intended to clear up a lot of salary issues. The fact that he managed 8-8 with what he had, too, wasn't so bad as I recall.

Then, well... we all know how it shook out.

As for Brian - look at all the father-son coaches. How many coaching progeny do as well or better than their fathers? I can't really think of any, but there may be some I don't know about. Maybe BGO Oracle can help...

That said, even with the Shannys - I agree with the Oracle, that is by far the closest.

The funny thing is, BGO Oracle listed the Schottenheimers, I fully expected to read about the Ryans! I thought that was pretty funny that they didn't earn a mention.

Schottenheimer is actually a pretty reasonable hire - at least more reasonable than I was expecting from Jerry Jones. It's kind of crazy, even with his last name, the guy has spent 14 years as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, and never once gotten a chance to be a HC. He's worked with some great ones - Dick Vermeil, Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll (but also some stinkers - Rex Ryan, Eric Mangini...). He must have a pretty good sense of what works, and what doesn't, at the very least.

Why did they pick Schottenheimer over Coach Prime?

Some people are theorizing that Jerry was motivated by cost and that was one of the key drivers down this road. The ESPN beat writer said one of Jerry's coach-search motivations is cost. The early conversations were never officially him getting interviewed; in fact, as far as I know, he was never formally interviewed even once. Most of the talk about him was based on some supposedly informal conversations he and Jerry had that never moved past that level (that is my understanding).
