Not all divisions are created equal
Florio, the idiot he is, is now throwing out Jason Whitten's name. Doesn't seem Deion is interested, but imagine Deion and Jason on the same staff. That's a different brand Dan didn't have.

Here is another report touching on that.

NFL Network’s Jane Slater reports former Cowboys TE Jason Witten was in plans to be “an heir apparent of sorts” to former HC Mike McCarthy.
Slater reports that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had talks with Witten to join the Cowboys’ coaching staff under Mike McCarthy and be an heir to the head coaching role. However, with McCarthy now moving on, the plan for Witten is in flux. Slater adds Witten could still be in the mix to join the Cowboys’ staff, not necessarily in a head coach role, but in some coaching capacity. The Cowboys have indicated interest in Deion Sanders, among others, for head coach. Jerry Jones has been “making calls” and Dallas has several options for their head coaching vacancy. Time will tell just who will helm Jerry’s squad for 2025 and beyond, whether it is Sanders, Witten, or some other option.

Well I guess it's certainly a better job than the other jobs that are available with the possible exception of Chicago. That's all I got, I sure would not want to have to deal with everything a head coach has to deal with in Dallas.
 
Funny how far they've fallen. At the start of the year a lot of the prognostacators predicted a playoff berth and either a first or second place finish in the division. Remember, the Eagles had fallen apart last year and so people felt sketchy about them. We were chosen to be out not only last in the division but bottom five period.

I still go back to Game 3 against the Bengals. I clearly remember Troy Aikman saying at the start of the telecast that this was a rebuild, and nobody could argue that at the time.

We've seen this movie before. Eventually the list of candidates dwindles down to coaches nobody else is interested in because nobody with other options is signing up to work for someone who's clinically insane. Long live Jerry Jones!

Cowboys are hiring offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, Jerrry Jones tells ESPN.“Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant,” Jones said. “He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”
 
Dallas cowboys fans are the saddest team in America this week. Washington making them question their bandwagon decisions back in the 90s

It's so nice to see them doomed for the unforeseeable future with Jerry as GM, and his knack for "smart" moves
 
What an uninspiring hire. But we need to be fair here. The Boys choke in the playoffs, obviously, but they did put together 12 win seasons 3 years in a row so it hasn't been a trainwreck.

That's an argument to keep McCarthy.

Change HCs to a subordinate doesn't guarantee the same level of success. Typically that type of move (in my mind, if I am modeling an organization) should only be done when you have reached the pinnacle and the HC retires or something. In other words, you are convinced that no changes are necessary at all.

I think they did want McCarthy back, but for less money than he wanted. So maybe Jerry's feelings DO align with that thinking. If so, then yes, I can understand it.

I just don't think Jerry looks at what they've done and thinks "this is good enough." I do think the playoffs have a lot of randomness (single-elimination rounds always do), and Jerry knows that. However, when you have three shots, and you show some of the specific plays and ways you lost... there were red flags there. Other factors ($$$, ease of transition...) made this happen more than a real belief this is the best option for the team. I imagine results will be in line with that type of decision making as well. Of course, they may get lucky and it turns out Brian can HC a team really well, but it wouldn't be my expectation.
