I've been meaning to start this thread for ages. There are several intentions of this thread:

1. A place to post news about the Media covering the commanders. For example: this person got fired, this show got canceled, whatever.
2. A place for commentary on media coverage by our local and the national media.

With that said, have at it. I will post the first bit of news in the next post so it doesn't get confused with the OP.

Ben created his own substack:

Nick replaced Ben at the Athletic

I personally find this very odd. Ben was good, Nicki is good. Why the Athletic would part with Ben to go to Nicki seems strange. Unless Ben wanted to go, which he hasn't indicated he wanted to.

Though I appreciate Nicki leaving one of my least favorite news outlets, so that makes me somewhat happy.

I would imagine it’s all about salary. The Athletic started as a “for writers by writers” type of venture but I imagine since they were bought out the squeeze, as always, is being put on. Standig out and Nicki in probably just means that whatever contract The Athletic was offering Standig didn’t work for him, but was an improvement on her WaPo gig. Who knows, though.

I thought I read from Ben that he was let go.

Edit: Yep, here it is

I suspect it's about money. Ben is a more senior writer and Nicki is newer to the field so they probably can have her fill the inches at a cheaper rate.

Not so sure about that-

Nicki Jhabvala is a reporter covering Washington’s NFL team. Before joining The Washington Post in 2020, she covered the Denver Broncos for six years, for the Denver Post (2014-2018) and later the Athletic (2018-2020). She has also been an editor and producer for the New York Times, Sports on Earth and Sports Illustrated. She was born in Raleigh, N.C.

Ben is the better of the 2 at mock drafts though.

Yeah that’s my one concern over this switch, I like Nicki’s coverage of news but her prospect knowledge and general draft memory bank seems much more limited when I see her discussing things on Keim’s pod, etc. It’s just not something she specializes in as part of her coverage whereas Standig is big on it

Of course I could just follow Standig’s Substack but that’s not super appealing in this age of a million subscriptions

If you like Standig, the best thing to do is to listen to his pod, and read other stuff. The Last Man Standig podcast can be found anywhere you get your podcasts.

Ironically, one of his most common former guests was Nicki Jhabvala, who's now his replacement. So, I wonder if that's going to continue. I hope so. I also hope there is no awkwardness.

I do find it odd the Athletic flipped Ben for Nicki. I like Nicki, but I think Ben has a pretty decent size following which I'm not sure Nicki has without being with the Post.

I wish them both well. I do hope they team up. I wonder if there is somebody who is going to step into her role at the Post. Though they do have more than one reporter on the beat, so it's possible they don't replace her I guess.

I think Standig is a smart cat and has some insightful takes - but he is brutal to listen to. He has zero radio energy. It's really bad. Some guys are writers, not media personalities. And some guys (Russell and Grant P. come to mind) can't put a logical thought together but have the personality to build a following on the radio.

There are very few who can do both. Galdi, Sheehan, and Logan Paulson are probably the most obvious who leap to mind. Hoffman isn't terrible, but he's got a little Grant P. in him at times.

I like Standig’s podcast. I think when he’s just having a conversation with somebody he’s good. I never listen to him as a guest unless he’s on with Galdi. But Galdi can be a bit of a cheat code for guests. He’s a very good interviewer and really helps his guests out

Except for Thor Nystrom who will speed talk on about how great he is and how amazing his board is without talking a breath for 7 minutes.

I'll confess I have never once listened to Standig Room Only.... I've only heard him as a guest commentator. In those instances, I've just found him to be unengaging. I don't know whether it's the monotone delivery or his general lack of energy, but he's not someone I would seek out based on what I've heard. Maybe unfair based on my limited exposure.

The worst is when they keep trying to make an analogy that just doesn't work. I listen to GP and Danny, because it's the only thing to listen to in the afternoon, but man is it painful sometimes. And when they start riffing on food topics:

I heard Craig Hoffman go off on a "woke" diatribe about the former name:

I liked him on the Galdi podcast which is why O started to listen to his podcast.

But I get it. He’s not the most engaging guy. And sometimes you just don’t gel with a particular personality and therefor have no reason to seek them out.

But he’s a damn sight better than literally everybody on radio.

If you ever have trouble sleeping just listen to the opening couple of minutes of SRO. The music alone will solve that problem.

Chuckle, I've never noticed the music.

SRO is 6th in my podcast listening order:

1. Galdi - for all around coverage of everything, he's absolutely the best
2. Bram Weinstein - I've been a fan of Bram's since before he left for ESPN, and find him both entertaining and also he'll drop the odd nugget because he's an actual employee of the team. He also has a fairly good mix of "homer" vs. "realist." He can be a bit much at times, but I like him .
3. Keim - for actual information. NOTE: I don't worship at the alter of Keim the way some do, but he is rarely wrong, and has generally good intel. Because he's well respected and the elder statesman of the beat reporters, he has a good feel for what is going on.
4. Washington Football with JP Finlay and Mitch Tischler. I never thought I would say the pod would suffer when Pete Hailey left, but it has. It's less entertaining. I listen to it for purely entertainment value, never really expect anything news worthy. But they are pretty funny.
5. Blind Big - for very obvious reasons.
6. Standig Room Only. I like Ben. I don't find him as boring as others I suppose. And I like his interviews.

I'll flip on the Take Command podcast from time to time, but I just haven't gotten into it for some reason. I like Logan Paulsen, but for some reason, it's never clicked with me.

I keep going back to try Sheehan again here and there, and every time I do, I am reminded why I stopped listening to him. He might be DC Media Royalty, but I've given up on him. I find him overly boomerish, self congratulatory, opinionated, and somewhat insufferable at this point.

I guess while I'm at it, as most know, I can't stand Chris "pregnant pause" Russell. I find him to be a bloviating fool with a terrible speech pattern. Mr. 2 Minutes Rick Snider is also on my hit list. Nationally Fake News Florio is a moron, and Thor Nystrom is the embodiment of everything I hate about draft coverage.

While Warren Sharp is extremely detailed about everything, and generally insightful, I think he tries to fit analytics to some things where they don't fit. And probably most importantly, the only reason to have a mustache like his would be to be a star on a 1970's throwback porn website. Also, his video production value could use some help, I have suggested he hit up some OnlyFans creators to show him how to work a web cam, because he literally says (or at least said) "and now I'm going to click the button on my phone to flip the screen" and then points the camera to his laptop to show graphs. We can do better. Let's do better.

3. Make fun of all the stupid shit Lynell Willingham says
