Yeah. Howell may be damaged goods, but you’re seconds point is the bigger problem. He probably needs a great situation with a great WB guru and those guys don’t need to roll the dice on a reclamation project
Now that I think about it, maybe even being a practice squad QB on a QB whisperer team might be the best path for him.

I dunno. He had bad coaching when he entered the league, turned the ball over and made slow decisions which led to sacks.

shrug. It’s unfortunate, I think he could have been a good player. Just like Ramsey. But Spurrier destroyed him. And even Gibbs couldn’t fix him.

I kidof think he was Patrick Ramseyed. EB did him no favors.

He is like Patrick. Marginally talented when it comes to the NFL level.

The first thing Joe Gibbs did as head coach (and I was at the game) was replace Ramsey with Mark Brunell.

As fans, we fall in love with the 'guy' and we often discount the 'talent'. We blame the players inability to break through on coaching and unfair circumstances. But most of the time, the player just isn't good enough.

Loved me some Sam Howell and will always root for him, but probably lacks the talent to ever be an NFL starter.

I think both Patrick and Sam had the physical tools to be a viable NFL starter. Good arm strength (with Patrick, very good), good enough mobility, toughness etc.

What they both lacked was the ability to process and throw quickly.

Could they have been developed better and learned? We’ll never know. I think Patrick could have been a low-end starter in the league. At that time he would have needed to find a team which allowed him to get the ball out quickly. A run-run-convert third down team was never going to be good for him. He probably could have been good in a west coast system if he was given the time to develop.

I agree with most of this, but a WC system, reading the defense, processing quickly, and getting the ball out quickly and accurately, was not going to work for Sam or for Patrick Ramsey. Neither were good processors.

In a WC system, look at the success that a fast processor without a great arm, like Brock Purdy, can have.

There just isn’t a place in the NFL for slow processing guys that don’t see the field well and hold the ball. It doesn’t matter how good your arm is

One thing a good WCO does is it defines reads 1 and 2 so clearly it actually helps the slower processing QBs because it takes decisions out of their hands. One thing Cooley said is it gives QBs answers very fast. Rather than having to read out the entire field going deep to shallow, it’s plant, hitch and throw. Steve Young also said because the reads are tied to footwork, it becomes more mechanical.

It’s unlikely either of them could be top 10 guys. But I think in an offense which dictates getting the ball out quickly and the offense dictates where that it, I think it could work.

The best example I think is Sam Darnold. Darnold is a bad QB. He’s always been a bad QB. He's a slow processor and just generally bad. But in KOC’s system, he was able to give Darnold enough easy reads to mitigate the fact he’s just actively bad.

And we’re going to see how bad he is this year. He’s going to stink it up with the Seahawks.

There is giving a young QB some bench time, behind a good vet QB and time to learn the NFL and the offense and then start him on a decent team with the right tools and then there is what we did to Howell. We definitely Ramseyed him into the dirt.

A new OC that sucked ass, bad OL, no real receiving option other than TMac, even at TE, bad defense that left him in bad situations.

We did everything wrong with Howell, so who knows if he'll ever succeed in the NFL. I hope so.

Hard to argue how nearly setting NFL records for passing attempts, while also nearly setting NFL records in sacks taken, was a smart sound strategy.

We did literally nothing right. But, I’m dubious about how he’d have done if he landed on the 49’ers or Eagles. I think his best case scenario is replacement level starter.
