Change of Thought: Let Orakpo Go

One thing we can do is extend Trent and lower his cap hit in 2014.

He seems to have learned his lesson from the suspension and may pound for pound be our best player.

Take that money and sign two Pro-bowl offensive lineman...or one OL and a top WR. Or maybe even all three.

Hmmm ... the average cap hit of a top guard in the league is somewhere around $9.5 million this year. The average cap hit for a top ten WR this season is $12.7 million.

I don't know what you all think we're going to get for $4 or $5 million a year, but guys, those are the type of free agents our team is made of right now. Chester is costing us $4 million this year. Montgomery $3.4. Lichtenteiger $3.3. Polumbus $2.6. On defense Cofield $7.6 million, Bowen $7 million, Carriker $6.5 million ... This team, right now, is made up of middle-tier, role-player, bargain-basement-not-too-expensive free agents. You want 4 or 5 players for the price of one star? Well, we have a lot of that already.

And it sucks.

Orakpo wants a lot of money. I don't know if we should pay him $13 mil a season. But I do know that this team will be worse without him, and signing a bunch of mediocre players for the same money hoping that one of them blossoms into greatness is, in my opinion, a dumb plan. Been there. Done that.

We need the draft to build our foundation. In the meantime we have the cap space to afford a few stars. Frankly, I'd just as soon sign one of our own than hope someone else's guy, who is going to cost just as much, works out here. Again, been there. Done that.

Free agency primer: Top 10 linebackers - NFL.com

In a class of his own

1. Brian Orakpo, Washington Redskins

It would be a typical Washington move to let one of its few great homegrown talents get away. Orakpo is powerful and versatile. He's strong against the run and an excellent pass rusher. Washington's conflicted franchise-tag decision on Orakpo will be watched closely. If he hits the market, Orakpo could be the highest-paid free agent of the offseason.
The bolded portion is the truth.

If everybody outside the fanbase can see Rak's value, why can't the fanbase see it?

Henry nailed it... this is what I've been trying to say forever. This whole "3 to 4 replacements" theory just isn't going to work.

Just tag him already, and visit this topic again 12 months from now.

Brad Johnson
Antonio Pierce
Ryan Clark
Walt Harris
Carlos Rodgers
Laron Landry

We still haven't replaced many of the guys above. And it's been five years or longer with most of them.

My point was less about getting 3 players for Rak's money, but the money we we save from re-signing him to a contract he hasn't earned, coupled with the large amount we have in Cap Space this year, we could sign 3 top tier Free agents for the offense...well, at least 2. We should concentrate on offense first while our young QB is still reeling from this past season. He needs help to get his confidence back up. Yeah a new coach witha different philosophy will help, but he neeeeeeeeds protection and weapons to throw to.

Spend the money to get him his supporting cast! Spend it now so he doesn't become the QB McD5 thinks he may already be...damaged goods.

While I know it's not feasible, I would not be opposed to seeing the front office spend the entire cap on making the offense a priority. We aren't winning a championship next year, build the offense first to get Griffin his support and work on the defense next year.

I hate to tell you this, but Orakpo IS a top tier free agent. Outside of a handful of people living in DC, he's considered THE top free agent of this offseason. NFL.com has him listed second overall behind Jimmy Graham. I know some of you think you have special knowledge of Orakpo's deficiencies and therefore we shouldn't re-sign him, but then again, I am sure there are fans of every team who feel the same way about their guys.

I just don't know why Orakpo can't be one of those top tier free agents we sign with Rak's money and the cap space. Because he's secretly suckier than the 100 other free agents listed below him?

You know what the rest of the world is saying about us right now? Same old Redskins. Won't re-sign their own good players. I know we think 'the media' is out to get us and wrong all the time, but sadly, historically, that's just not the case. I don't think it's the rest of the world that's out of touch when it comes to this team. Not anymore.

I don't think that's a great plan. Griffin needs to know that he doesn't need to save the world on every possession. He needs to be able to have faith in his defense that they'll hold once in awhile. Ignoring an already historically bad defense, while letting it's best players leave, would be a disaster. You think he was pressing last year? Wait until this team give up FORTY points a game.

Yes, we should address the offense as well. But I really think ignoring the defense entirely would be a bad idea.

I do not agree! Most of these "experts" are copy and paste and don't do their homework. How many of them have watched every single down that Orakpo has played? I am so tired of seeing him whiff on 85% of the plays and look good the other 15% enough to make a few highlight reels.

He simply is not what you, and the numerous others say he is. He's not. I don't care what you or the "experts" say. I have seen him in just about every down for the last 4 years. Being at the top of a Free Agent DE/OLB class that has very little to offer, doesn't make you worth more than other players at that position. It makes you the top of a poor class.

Again, those saying, "Same 'ole redskins" don't matter to me. All I care about is winning. If re-signing Orakpo is going to make us a winner, OK...I just don't like the idea of paying him the money. I would rather use every penny of that to sign Alex Mack, arguably the best Center in the game. That is a far more valuable use of resources.

Historically bad defense? That is about as an exaggerated statement as I have heard you make in a long time. 4 years bad is not historically bad. Before that we saw nearly a decade of above average or better from our defense except one year they were riddled with injuries, in 06 I believe.

Regardless, I think it is quite obvious Griffin has a fragile ego. He needs to do all those things you say, and it would benefit this team far more for him to have a greater supporting cast than it would to re-sign Brian Orakpo.

Look, we can go at this all day long. We are not going to change anyone's mind in this.

We all watch the Redskins. We all say 'you don't know them like I do.'

Fact is, yeah, people kinda do. I'm done pretending this team is full of hidden secrets that other people can't possibly see. Orakpo is not a perfect player. On a bad defense his imperfections get spotlighted and scrutinized by a cranky fanbase. But the guy can play.

Yeah, and Cleveland fans are having this exact same debate about Mack right now. Some think at $8.5 million or so he's going to cost too much and Greco can slide over and the drop-off won't be all that bad. Others think he's a must re-sign.

And, oddly, many of them mention Orakpo as a possible addition to the Cleveland defense.

This is not a debate unique to Redskin fans. Ours is not some special secret snowflake of a situation. All free agents cost money. The ones worth signing, anyway. The question is, do we want some other team's question mark or our own? Again, if we're signing a top free agent, I'd rather keep our own.

Historically bad defense? That is about as an exaggerated statement as I have heard you make in a long time. 4 years bad is not historically bad. Before that we saw nearly a decade of above average or better from our defense except one year they were riddled with injuries, in 06 I believe.

The 478 points we gave up in 2013 is, quite literally, the most we've ever given up in one season. Ever.

The 29.9 points per game we gave up was the most we've given up in a 16 game season. Ever. By more than a field goal per game.

That 2006 defense? The one I had personally considered the worst I'd ever seen in my lifetime ... that defense gave up 102 fewer points than the 2013 team.

I am most certainly not exaggerating when I say the 2013 defense was historically bad. It's the worst defense this team has put on a field since Eisenhower was in office, and quite possibly ever.

Regardless, I think it is quite obvious Griffin has a fragile ego. He needs to do all those things you say, and it would benefit this team far more for him to have a greater supporting cast than it would to re-sign Brian Orakpo.

I'm not sure why it has to be an either/or situation. This team has the means to sign more than just Orakpo, even franchised. But whether or not we do that I really really really think it would a bad idea to ignore the defense this offseason.

Look, we can go at this all day long. We are not going to change anyone's mind in this.

Yeah, but what else am I gonna do? Work? :)

You could try Pearl Jam one more time.

Your argument is not served with hyperbole, El. Whiffs on 85% of the plays? That's absurd.

Actually, that's exactly what makes him worth it - its called market value. He's worth that much specifically because he's the top free agent, whatever circumstances dictate that. Maybe its just poor luck that we have to re-sign him now, or maybe its lack of foresight for not re-upping him last year in one of his best seasons yet. Who knows. But he is a very good defender, probably our best one at this point; losing him would be disastrous.

Henry already addressed this, but yeah - historically bad. As in, the worst in Redskins history. Not sure what qualifies as "historically bad" in your opinion, but giving up the most points of any Redskins defense ever qualifies in my book.

Regardless, I think it is quite obvious Griffin has a fragile ego. He needs to do all those things you say, and it would benefit this team far more for him to have a greater supporting cast than it would to re-sign Brian Orakpo.

This same offense put up over 27 points per game in 2012, and all we've done is added Jordan Reed, an explosive playmaker. Do we need another WR? Sure...but I think they'll be able to address that in the draft at 34th overall. A big-time guy is going to fall to us at that spot.

Here is some non-hyperbole. Per the NFL network, Rak has never sacked Tony Romo. Not once.

He's a slippery bastage, that's for sure. I don't think we should base any long-term decisions on that, though. Has he ever hurried Romo into a sack or bad decision? I seem to recall several hurries on Romo with Romo being able to escape (he's pretty elusive), then take advantage of our poor secondary.

This is the biggest knock on Rak, for sure. Lack of sacks versus the NFC East. Maybe it's a law of averages thing? I dunno... it is perplexing, I will agree.

His play against nfc east foes is definitely a concern but could be poor playcalling on our part or excellent game planning by our opponents, unless he is gun shy in the division which I just don't believe imo.

He stepped it up this year, with sacks against Sheli and the Eagles, I believe.

Well, today's a big day for this topic. I said it before....I'll say it again......either sign him or franchise him, but KEEP him. We have other holes to fill and we need not piss around worrying about a new hole left with his departure. McD5 said it well....we're still set in those positions after losing players like Laron Landry, Ryan Clark, Carlos Rogers, Antonio Pierce. It's just not that east to find players of a certain quality. Let's not put ourselves in the position of having to again......for no reason. If we have to, franchise him, make him prove himself again, and then deal with this again in a year. Information is king....and we'll have more information about Rak a year from now.

Just my 2 cents.

Which leaves me with 1 cent. So, let's not have any more issues......cause I won't have enough to weigh in.
