Athletically the dude is a stud. I just wonder if he has the size that Jay covets, he's like 300 or so soaking wet. Didn't play much with his hands in the turf. Not saying it's a bad call because I agree with you. But how do think Jay is thinking I guess is my point.
 
I heard Bill Polian on Mike & Mike this AM. He had some interesting takes on trading down. Irregardless of what anyone may think of him as a GM, his prospective was from a GM's draft experience which my guess is most of us don't have. OK - granted, I may be the only one that's never been a GM.

First, the easy one. OK, this probably would not apply to the Redskins anyway, at least in the early rounds. If no one is on your wishlist at your pick and you get a shot to trade down, do it. You just got bailed out. Also applies to guys your pretty darn sure you can get later anyway. Sounds like a no-brainer right? Except how often have the Skins made a reach instead? Granted, you do need a dance partner.

Scenario #2. You have a list of guys you would take in a particular round without a reach. Per Polian, 90% of the time a guy on that list will disappear before falling to wherever you drop to. Another team will grab a dude beforehand, somebody trades up ahead of you - whatever. Basically what that boils down to is you can't trade down any further than one more guy that is on your list. Example, if you have four guys on your hotsheet for that round, you can't drop more than five spots. If you do - you probably don't get any of them. Now your probably stretching for a player you should really be taking in a later round.

Yeah I know - Skins have a lot of holes and all that. But I did find that last bit very interesting. I mean, isn't the idea of the draft to collect players you want versus a bunch of picks you have to settle for?

The BBQ mocks continue as we get a closer look at the prospects. The draft is one day away and the mocks will be updated each morning through the weekend.

Round Two:
After having a tentative deal with the Browns, the 49ers offer the second of their two picks in this round for Kirk Cousins. It is a surprising move, but the 49ers organization has a few concerns about their starter and Cousins offers some insurance.

Round Two: Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
Moses is the latest Virginia product to continue a tradition of quality tackle prospects from President Jefferson’s university. He is a talented player who should fit in at the right tackle position.

Round Two: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
The Redskins make OL a priority with the first two picks in the draft. Jackson is a big bodied bruiser who would fit in perfectly at the right guard position. He is powerful in the running game and provides solid pass protection.

Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Cody Latimer, WR, Indiana

Round Three:
The Redskins trade down and receive two third round picks.

Round Three: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska
Jean-Baptiste is a big corner who has the size that more teams like in today’s NFL. The talented Cornhusker had a superb senior season and caught the eyes of scouts with his elite skills being on display in post-season bowl games.

Round Three: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
The young Razorback is ready to be plugged in right away and become a mainstay on the Redskins roster for the next decade. He has a nasty streak and possesses great mobility for his size.

Other Possibilities:
Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin
Keith McGill, CB, Utah
Cameron Fleming, OT, Stanford
Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State

Round Four: Justin Ellis, DT, Louisiana Tech
In other years, Ellis would grade out as a second rounder. The deepest draft ever has him dropping to the fourth round and the Redskins get a steal at a vital position.

Round Six:

Round Six: DeAndre Coleman, DE/DT, California
Coleman is a great fit at defensive end in a 3-4 scheme and has the ability to play some defensive tackle when needed. He would be a depth addition, but could become a starter within a year or two.

Round Seven: Shaquil Barrett, OLB, Colorado State
Barrett is a highly underrated player who simply makes good defensive plays. Check out these stats: The Mountain West defensive player of the year had twenty tackles for a loss, three blocked kicks, twelve sacks, seventy-four tackles, and was a special teams ace.

Round Seven: Jordan Najvar, TE, Baylor
He rarely got targeted by the Bears as they rarely feature tight ends in the pass happy offense. When Najvar was targeted, he produced and put up good numbers. An excellent blocker and a superior special teamer is hard to pass up in the seventh round.

I would be watching OT and ILB in rounds 2 and 3.

We went after a number of tackles in free agency but came up empty. This draft is deep with OL, a chance to get a first round talent in Round 2.

We signed 3 linebackers in free agency but none project to being 16 game starters and all are on one year contracts. Hayward and Jordan look like special teams 'glue' guys who can help out on defense in a pinch.

I don't see any tandem mates for Riley on the roster.
 
Well BB, it certainly appears after all is said and done that you are strongly on the O-Line Bandwagon. The latest has us with 2 2nd round picks and two 3rd round picks and, of those four picks, three are Offensive Linemen. Is this really how you THINK our FO will draft or how you WANT our FO to draft? Just wondering......and certainly NOT bashing.

Should Trent Williams go down, God forbid, WHO is his backup? While I was initially thinking our 2nd round pick would be a Defensive player, and it STILL makes sense to me, I'm definitely warming to the idea of a swing tackle who might start at RT but can also play LT. I certainly wouldn't want to see Polumbus move to LT and we haven't seen nearly enough of Tom Compton to know if he's capable of it.

Reading between the lines of the recent Bruce Allen interview, the focus seems to be on who is under contract for 2015 and 2016. Rak and Trent are going to command a big chunk of our future salary cap so I don't see us keeping both without making big sacrifices elsewhere. I think Allen looks hard at OT and OLB with our first two picks in this draft and I'm pretty sure one of those positions gets filled by round 2 or 3.

Great point... probably a safe bet that OT and an OLB will be drafted in the first three or four picks. If Cleveland sends us #26 for Cousins, even better.

I am curious to see why some think OLB is a draft possibility when ILB is where the need is. We have Orakpo and Kerrigan, Jackson and Brandon Jenkins on the roster. Who is supposed to take over for London? And OLB is the draft concern? I don't get it.
 
Trent Williams cap number will actually go down once we negotiate an extension.

There is no either/or with Trent and Brian Orakpo.

You can find outside linebackers but franchise left tackles are almost always high draft choices.

I think the argument is that ILB talent can be found later in the draft than OLB. Also, I'm confident in Perry Riley taking over for London, personally. The players like Jordan, Hayward and hopefully Robinson can rotate in the other spot IMO.

So, you draft a position in a draft with limited picks, you don't have a first rounder, so you can have a future replacement for your 2 starters, both of whom have gone to the Pro-Bowl?
 
OLB is a luxury pick in 2014.

We have two starters making $15M under the cap and just resigned Rob Jackson as a veteran backup.

Meanwhile we have a RT with question marks and a third tackle in Tom Compton that has never started one game in the NFL.

I am amused by the BPA argument.

High in the draft there is often little separating a tackle from a defensive end or cornerback in terms of metrics, etc.

It really is a case of either/or based on need.

Sure. This happens every year. Plus, we don't really know how many picks they'll have yet; they could get another 2nd or even #26 overall for Cousins from Cleveland, they could trade back from 34 for more picks (or from 26 if that happens), its all in the air right now.

Bottom line: one draft isn't going to plug all our holes, it's just not. If the team feels like it can't afford both Rak AND Kerrigan in a couple years, and a solid OLB is sitting there in the third or fourth round, I'm absolutely a fan of the pick. Good teams use the draft not only to fill current holes, but in anticipation of future holes. It's about time the team starts drafting like a real NFL franchise, instead of stocking up on 2nd round picks and drafting three receivers.

I keep hearing that we can't plug all the holes in one year argument being made, and I get that...but the idea of taking a draft pick at a position where we are stacked looking 2 or 3 years down the line is missing the immediate need you have. Like BT said in the post above your's, OLB is a luxury pick we simply cannot afford this year.
 
I think last years Super Bowl showed that without some premiere offensive linemen you aren't going to beat the Seahawks, 49ers or Panthers defenses in the NFC.

And Denver had all the skill talent at qb, WR, TE and it didn't make any difference.
