Greg Toler didn't make the trip to Tampa. That means he will be on the final fifty-three.
 
If I had to cut a WR, it would be the hardest choice out of all the talent we have.

That is surprising, if a comeback were ever in the cards for him, that would be the most attractive scenario.

Burner’s Burning Questions – Predicting The Fifty-Three Man Roster And Practice Squad, 2016​

The Redskins have completed the offseason and preseason. The only remaining business is narrowing the roster to fifty players, signing ten to the practice squad, and handing out injury designations. As we continue to put the roster under our BBQ microscope, cuts will trickle in and the pace will accelerate in the next few days. Today’s list is truly our final prediction.

Next week BBQ will post the annual predictions for each regular season game. We were a bit harsh last year, but let’s see if we can be more accurate this time.

This list is truly the final one. It also replaces the list from yesterday - it had a few errors anyway.

We'll update the list once the actual roster is determined and the practice squad is selected.
 
Ross is very shaky at PR's.

Was hoping to see Thorpe get more chances. Struck me more as a fearless returner. Looked much more comfortable fielding punts too.
 
Thorpe caught my attention a couple of times this preseason. He seems fluid and athletic, and plays "bigger" sometimes than his listed 6'0", 200 lbs. I think he's probably too raw to contribute much as a rook, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him land on the practice squad if he clears waivers.
 
Cooley said the Redskins won't expose Sudfeld to waivers, he's going to make the 53.

Is that Cooley off the top of his head or after playing some golf with Bruce? 😎

If the whispers that they'll keep Sudfeld on the 53 are true, it would have to be based not just on performance in the preseason games, but the practice-field and film room body of work since rookie camp. The timing and short stuff that seem such a staple in Gruden's passing scheme haven't really looked all that good from him yet, at least in games. But one thing we eve we fans have been able to see is the man has a legit NFL arm, and pretty good touch on deep and midrange throws.

Yeah, clearly he's at best a project ... but a big tall rangy guy like that, with a good deep ball ... if he's shown them in practice and the classroom that he has the potential to maybe be something down the road, they almost have to keep him around. If the league has shown us anything the past few years, it's that legit QB candidates are a rare commodity indeed. You think you even might have one, you better let it play out.
 
When is the last time we DIDN'T keep 3 QBs on the roster? Every year, I hope that we won't keep 3, but it seems like we always do. I think Sudfeld has mostly looked pretty capable of running the offense. He's looked quite good at times - although Om is right that he lacks finesse on short throws but perhaps he can work on that. His biggest issue is hesitancy - he waits to make a throw that if he'd just thrown in rhythm would've been a completion. That's just what rookies do - the whole transition from college to the NFL where you cannot wait for a WR to be open, you have to trust and deliver. Once he moves past that hesitancy, I think he has potential. I'd throw out Wednesday's game as it was raining cats and dogs and it's pretty tough to look great in that environment especially in the 4th preseason game where it's all scrubs almost entirely.

And Fear - I don't really get the love for Ross (and I'm not convinced he makes the cut)? He shows flashes, but then drops easy balls (and with some frequency). He was a major disappointment last year for me, but maybe I'm being too harsh.
 
I think we keep Suds, but likely not as much as a performance reason (though, of course he has to show good enough to be the 3rd) but more to keep him away from other teams.
 
When a team decides to spend a pick and take a developmental quarterback in the draft, I think there is a subtle acknowledgement on the part of the GM and Head Coach that they are going to have to save a roster spot for that player if he has the size, arm and instincts for the position.

As the stats bear out, a guy taken in the 6th or 7th round is not going to be a contributor in Year 1 as a rookie. That goes with making the pick.

If you are going to go with only two quarterbacks and you have Cousins and McCoy on the roster then what would be the point of taking a quarterback?

He certainly isn't going to beat out Cousins or McCoy coming from a spread offense where he never took a snap from center or ran anything like an NFL offense.

Just what I was thinking. The only reason to take a QB in the later rounds is to make an investment for the future. Why would we then cut the guy for not being polished yet? Either let him develop or don't pick him in the first place.

This may be stretching it, but do you think they see Sudfeld as insurance, and/or leverage, in case all offseason negotations with Cousins just go nowhere, and him and his agent make insane demands, and Suds could be the eventual heir to the role ?

Again, Cooley said Sudfeld was going to make the 53 man roster, so that's about the same thing as hearing from Moses when its about the Redskins :laugh:
