Burner's Burning Questions: Grades, Predictions, Evals, Questions, 2019 Season

He is not making it up. I can see that by his language and how he is approaching it.

He will not play football again. It's that simple.

Well, there goes the trade value...30% of his scalp was removed?

I wonder if he ever told his wife? I wonder if he ever told his family? I wonder if he ever told his agent? His manager? Friends? Mom? Anyone outside athletic specialists that he had a growth? None of them told him to see a specialist?

I had cancer, I knew there was a problem but ignored it for a couple years...mostly out of fear. I didn't depend on my chiropractor for the issue when I knew I needed to have it diagnosed. I went to see the doctor best qualified to help me, then the oncologist after I was told to go.

Luckily it hadn't spread, even though my oncologist was extremely surprised it hadn't. But it was MY responsibility to have the tumor diagnosed by a qualified medical personnel., not my physical therapist.

Again, Bruce at his best. Another bungled episode.

This guy brought in Gruden and then fired him. He brought in McCloughan and then fired him.

At what point is he going to run out of scapegoats for his own incompetence?

And I don't care. He squandered his emotional capital by doing nothing for six years. The Skins are boobs - we already knew that. IMO, so is Williams. SIX YEARS!
- He had no control over something that happened to him. check. so far no blame.
- He went to the etam doctors. check. so far no blame.
- He tracked thre condition of his cyst. check. so far no blame.
- The medical staff repeatedly passed the don't worry signal. check. sa far no blame.
- The FO was not on top of the situation. check. so far no blame.
- After six years he finally made the move for a second opinion. what was he thinking for the previous five years? not a check. partial responsibility. Show me where his contract states "you are hereby relieved of any responsibility for your health."

I'm sympathetic with Williams in that this happened to him. I'm sympathetic that the medical staff never recommended he seek a second opinion (assuming Williams told them he was concerned they may be wrong). I'm sympathetic that the FO either had no clue or looked at it strictly in terms of dollars and football games. I'm sympathetic that his family had to suffer through the uncertainty.

Did Williams have other options? Could this have played out differently? You betcha.

In the event, I am glad he finally came to his senses, sought out another opinion, and did so before the odds of going terminal increased. That's about the only thing that really matters in all of this. The rest, I believe, is mostly PR fencing, money and Allen's unique talent for mis-reading every situation.

I suspect that Allen is done after this season. Snyder has become a total pariah and while he's the REAL problem with this franchise (I have no belief that replacing Allen with another GM that Snyder is selecting will result in transformational change or success), he has to move on from Allen to placate the fanbase (and probably to be able to fire a new HC of any quality whatsoever).

I 100% fault him for not bringing the Williams debacle to a resolution prior to now. I am probably the only Redskins fan who would say this - but I think outright releasing Williams would've been preferable to the current situation.

As for Williams medical journey and what role the org or Allen played in it - I'm not willing to judge. The Redskins are prohibited from discussing it and all we have are 18 minutes of Williams perspective.

Right now Trent should be a Cleveland Brown.

This issue should be moot.

Instead, we are going to have 8 more weeks of Williams trying not to play and leaking information to the media to gain fan sympathy.

So, the irony is that Bruce created this mess by trying to control everything, but in the end Williams has the pulpit with the media, his story is the one being told and HE is the one saying he isn't going to play.

Sound like the organization has control to you?

For those who thought he should seek a second opinion...

He did, but only when it became apparent that it was more than a skin related issue.

You don't seek a second opinion when it appears to be nothing more than a skin rash or a small bump. You simply don't seek a second opinion.

Monday morning quarterbacking is so easy here - for both sides. But you don't seek a second opinion for something that seems so insignificant at the start.

Sorry but I went to a dermatologist to get my skin condition checked out, I didn't rely on my chiropractor to tell me the bump on my back was stage 2 melanoma.

My question to you Bulldog is who are you addressing? Because there's not a Redskins fan alive that doesn't agree with that.

Some of you know this. A few years ago I had a heart condition that my primary doctor misdiagnosed. I ended up realizing something was really wrong just in time, taking myself to the emergency room and having open heart surgery at the age of 46. All if those things that Williams describes .... staring into The Abyss, thinking about your kids growing up without you, anger at the world ... such rage. I've been there. The anger and resentment ... I've been so mad that I wanted to cut myself off from anyone and everyone that even remotely ticked me off over the years.

I totally understand where Williams is coming from, and I dont think that it really necessarily has anything to do with Redskins. Not really. They are just as easy target at the moment. He'll need to move on, and Redskins really, truly, should let him. Screwing around with him now would just be a **** move at this point.

Williams needs to be somewhere else. Its really that simple. The Redskins shouldnt make it difficult for him. It wont work out well for them in the end.

I lost the use of my right arm and developed breathing issues at age 32 for over a year. I spent thousands of $$ out of pocket with numerous specialists while they tried to figure out what was causing this. They could never diagnose it. I was an avid marathoner at the time and have never been able to run since. I took a pulmonary function test a few years ago and it was not good. They now know what occurred with me. It upsets me even now, only because it was a life changing event although it could have been much worse. My father was having a huge MI several years ago and was misdiagnosed by ER physicians. He died 11 days later. The physicians explained to me why they did what they did and why they had not done certain things. I am a former CCU nurse so I knew it all already. As some others have shared with their own events, I was obviously torn apart over this. I could have stomped my feet and demanded they do certain tests - but I didn't. I chose to go with the recommended 'reasonable' treatment plan. It turned out to be a mistake. I don't blame the physicians - that's my choice.

Things happen. Really bad things happen. And sometimes we can never figure out why. It's human nature to want to find a 'cause', 'reason', or even someone to blame, and sometimes there is blame. But anger and upset about an outcome does not mean that the medical folks involved either didn't care, or didn't do the best they could with the information available. There are always exceptions. But without knowing every detail of what transpired, I'm never inclined to lay the blame on medical professionals we don't know anything about for an outcome that may or may not have been predictable or avoidable.

but it did change. that's a point Williams made in his interview today. it also lingered. I don't know about you BB...but if I have some skin issue....big or small...that doesn't go away...I'm asking more than one person about it. In fact, I have.

no matter how you cut it....six years is a long time to do nothing. especially if it's on one's head!

again......that he will survive and continue his life is the only thing that matters. what we're seeing now was forced by no trade and cashing in. understandable. but it's out there nevertheless.

why isn't Williams suing anyone? if there is culpability he should do so. why isn't he going public asking for these people to be fired? perhaps these people are a risk to everyone on that team.

what is end game for him in all of this?

What I don't understand is why Williams is still a Redskin. I don't understand why neither the team nor he has figured out a way to part ways when it seems like it's in everyone's interest to do so. Frankly - it's bizarre.

And this is what it all boils down to. We can argue all day about who's lying and who is more at fault or whatever, but that doesn't rally matter at this point. I think it's obvious that he's never going to play for the Redskins, for whatever reason.

The Redskins should have cut bait and moved on already.

Let's recap the bizarre season:

1. Trent Williams holds out and the Redskins in trying to shame him into a return see this blow up into THE issue of the season.

2. The OWNER decides to bring back the failed head coach for a lame duck year and then takes a qb at #15 on his own intuition for Jay to work with. The coach then treats Haskins as if he has the plague.

3. The team resigns Adrian Peterson for $2.5M to play in 2019 but the coach decides to make him inactive right off the bat before Game 1. Evidently the team and coach never discussed and came to agreement on how AP would be used during the season leading to dissension and players saying Peterson had been disrespected.

4. The team traded two #2 picks to move back in to the back end of the first round to take Montez Sweat. An athletic freak Sweat now appears to be a tweeter in the NFL, not a true OLB or DE. The Redskins said at the time Sweat could have gone in the top 15 and the pick was great value. Funny that it appears no one else seemed to think so. Belichick with aging linebackers on his defense passed on Sweat at #2 3, that was one sign Sweat was not a must have player. It's at least plausible that Sweat would have been there in the second round and there was no need to panic and trade picks and give up future value.

The cumulative effect of front office inertia over TW, front office/coaching differences on personnel, the insertion of a non-football evaluator Dan Snyder into the process, and the seemingly unrealistic expectations for a club coming off a 7-9 season has produced the worst season in recent memory.

This should be a textbook case of mismanagement for sports management programs at major college MBA programs all around the country.

The Caps won the Cup.

The Nationals won the World Series.

There is a plausible case to be made that the Wizards are in fact closer to regaining respectability and viability in their sport than the Redskins, who now appear to be in the cellar of DC sports.

At least the players on the Wizards seem like they want to be here and are working hard under the new administration.

There are half dozen players on the Redskins that are underperforming even modest expectations and seem to be looking forward to being elsewhere in 2020.

I'm not even sure this is debatable.

Last year the Wizards dumped everyone who wasn't a bonafide star and this year they are VERY young. They are doing exactly what a rebuilding team needs to do. Hachimura looks like he might be the steal of the draft. Kid's averaging 18 points and 7 rebounds out of the gate. This team has been dying for a solid big man for years. I think they found him. I am much more bullish on the Wizards than the Redskins.

exactly, like I said, we should have traded everyone over 23 years old, raided practice rosters the rest of this season, grabbed some cfl guys, and clear all our dead money for next year, audition young guys who want to be here and want to be redskins and send anyone else packing. instead we had a start with a lame duck coach and a gm who doesnt want to look bad enough to get fired so he will keep trying to plug massive holes with his thumb while we watch a team that has no shot at even being mediocre.

btw if we get a top 3 pick next year, we should trade down unless there is a generational talent available, we have so many holes we need to start stockpiling talent instead of swinging for the fences we need quantity right now, \i would rather have a ton of middle round picks unless there is a generational guy available.

We need an LT, there are 3 slated in the top 10, but at least 3 other teams likely choosing in the top 10 have LT needs, too. Unless there is a team who will throw the same picks we gave away for RG3, I wouldn't trade down and risk losing out on our LT for next 10 years. We won't get another shot at an LT outside the top 10 who can come in and start. Get what you can from Kerrigan and Williams in the off-season to get more picks.

Burner's Burning Questions: Grades, Predictions, Evals, Questions, 2019 Season

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope your week is going well. Hello to everyone on social media. You are our honored guest, so sit back and enjoy.

There is a new World Champion in DC! Unfortunately, it is not the Redskins. Congratulations to the Washington Nationals on their inspirational World Series title! Capturing baseball's most cherished prize while beating the two best teams in baseball for 2019 (Dodgers – winners of 106 games; Astros – winners of 107 games) proves that the Nationals are now the best. They had the best record in baseball since May 24 (record of 86-43) and captured baseball's most coveted title – well deserved. The parade was a lot of fun and the team celebrated in style. Again, congrats to the Nationals and all of their fans!

The Redskins are a complete and total disaster for the 2019 season and fans have no hope it seems. Yes, abruptly going from an emotional high and then to an emotional low. That's the Nationals and Mystics and then we have the Redskins. Bah. There will be a new head coach this winter. Assistant coaches are barely hanging on and if the NFL draft was held today, the Burgundy and Gold would have the second overall pick in the 2020 draft. The struggling displays this season have fans fuming and calling for the heads of the team president, defensive coordinator, and owner. Today we assign grades for the Bills game and make a prediction for the Jets game. Please remember that we are in the bye week and the next game is not until November 17 at FedEx. We also include what the Redskins should do in the 2020 free agency market. Also, we have a 2020 mock draft and it includes one trade.

BBQ would love to see your grades and evaluations each week if you are so inclined to do so. Too, your predictions for the next game are always appreciated. Give us your thoughts on 2020 free agency. And, if you're wanting to do more, feel free to put up 2020 a mock draft. There are no restrictions here. Go for it!

Upcoming Dates:
- Days until the Jets game: 12
- Days until Thanksgiving: 23
- Days until the Eagles game: 40
- Days until the Giants game: 47
- Days until Christmas: 50
- Days until the Cowboys game: 54

Week Nine: Grades and Evaluations
Offense:
Dwayne Haskins was on the field for his first start and while he didn't lead the team to a touchdown, there were some good moments for him on Sunday. Adrian Peterson was fantastic in the first half, but faded thereafter. The receivers were subpar and the offense was 100% ineffective in the red zone.
BBQ Grade: C-

Defense:
The defense played decently overall and was able to come up with key stops at times. The red zone defense was aided by miscues from the Buffalo offense on occasion. This unit faded down the stretch, but gave the team an honest chance to win and the offense could not capitalize.
BBQ Grade: C

Special Teams:
Dustin Hopkins was solid and Tress Way struggled in the very windy conditions when the wind was in his face. The returns were subpar and the kicking unit allowed a long return.
BBQ Grade: C

Coaching:
Offensive coaching is still lacking and has been very questionable for several games now. Running the ball in the first half was a good call, but the Bills made adjustments at halftime and the Redskins didn't. Defensive coaching was decent – that unit kept the team in the game until late in the contest. Special teams had a decent day - given the windy conditions.
BBQ Grade: C-

Week Eleven Prediction: Jets at Redskins
The woes will continue against a team that plays as poorly as the Redskins each week. The difference? The Jets are able to score touchdowns – not many, but they can produce touchdowns. The Redskins struggle in the red zone and it will be on display once again.
Jets vs. Redskins: FedEx Field – Landover, MD, Sunday 1:00pm EST
Television: FOX
BBQ Prediction: Jets 17 Redskins 12
Current BBQ Record: 9-0

Redskins Free Agency 2020
The Redskins are projected to have substantial cap space for 2020. A new CBA could push the total much higher. Generous cap space and so much more to be gained should be taken advantage of during this upcoming off-season. Here is what BBQ projects:
1. Release or trade CB Josh Norman - $12.5M additional cap space gained.
2. Release or trade OT Trent Williams - $12.75M additional cap space gained.
3. Release or trade OLB Ryan Kerrigan - $11.75M additional cap space gained.
4. Release TE Jordan Reed - $8.5M additional cap space gained.
5. Re-sign OG Brandon Scherff.
6. Re-sign RB Wendell Smallwood.
7. Re-sign Edge/OLB Noah Spence to a modest contract.
8. Re-sign OG Ereck Flowers.
9. Tender RFA DE Caleb Brantley.
10. Sign CB Byron Jones of the Cowboys.
11. Sign Edge/OLB/DE Yannick Ngakoue of the Jaguars.
12. Sign Edge/OLB Dante Fowler of the Rams.
13. Sign TE Austin Hooper of the Falcons.
14. Sign QB Nate Sudfeld of the Eagles to a modest contract.
15. Sign WR Robby Anderson of the Jets.
16. Sign OT/RT Germain Ifedi of the Seahawks.

In-Season Mock Draft
The Redskins trade a down few positions in the first round and gain the following: A second rounder. A third rounder. A fourth rounder. 2021 first and fifth rounders. A 2022 second rounder.
Round One: Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia
Round Two: Brycen Hopkins, TE, Purdue
Round Three: Collin Johnson, WR, Texas
Round Three: Curtis Weaver, OLB, Boise St.
Round Four: Jacob Eason, QB, Washington
Round Four: Alaric Jackson, OT, Iowa
Round Four (Comp): Bryce Hall, CB, Virginia
Round Five: Paddy Fisher, ILB, Northwestern
Round Seven: Leki Fotu, DT, Utah.
Round Seven: Ben Bredeson, OG, Michigan

Brian Mitchell nailed it on the head.

The Redskins would score more points if they tried to attack the end zone before getting inside the 20 where zones are compressed and there is less room to operate.

If Adrian Peterson is running for 100 yards and 5 yards per carry the play action pass should be there.

And Haskins' biggest strength as a qb IMO is accuracy down the field.

Why on a 1-8 team Callahan and O'Connell are unwilling to at least try some passes down the field is beyond me.

Cooley suggested a couple of plays of max pro with 2 wides going deep to shake things up.

That would give Haskins a chance with an easier read.
