Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Greetings from BBQ. Today we have the latest free agency update and there are several changes.

The offseason Lamborghini is maneuvering the road course of free agency, 2017. The combine came to a close last week and later this week we will have the first mock of March as we countdown to the draft. As free agency simmers down, the mocks will increase in frequency until the very moment we reach the first round.

We will look at our own free agents including those who are re-signed, released, and those who may not return. We will list candidates to be released and the cap savings/hit. We’ll provide updates as needed.

We will no longer list free agents from other teams, just team needs for the Redskins.

We take the latest chatter from Redskins Park and media pundits as BBQ tries to formulate what could happen in the coming days, weeks and months. Who will the Redskins target, re-sign and release? Feel free to offer your ideas on free agency and the draft.

Offseason Updates:
The Redskins have announced the offseason practice schedule:
Rookie Camp
May 12-14
OTAs
May 23-25
May 30-June 1
June 5-8
Veterans Mini Camp
June 13-15

The Redskins really have no need to overpay for another free agent defensive lineman. There are many quality prospects in the draft and that will be the case for many years to come.

The Redskins now have about $14.3M in salary cap room. Expect some cuts in the coming days and weeks. Obviously, a new contract for Kirk Cousins would likely add about $10M in cap space – if it happens.

With the hiring of Torrian Gray as the new DB coach (via Florida and Virginia Tech), look for a substantially huge improvement from the corners and safeties. Many of his former players are in the league and several are expected to be drafted (some highly) in 2017.

Here is the (currently) forecasted cap space for the Redskins in the coming years:
2018: $72.7M
2019: $107.7M
2020: $142M

Expect Morgan Moses to get a contract extension in the offseason.

Johnathan Hankins may or may not be on the radar at this time. Interest for him has dried up around the league – an indication that he is seeking too much money.

New DE/DT Stacy McGee is a good player and could see plenty of rotational time. Not a starter, but a solid player.

Personal Thoughts:
With the retirement of Kory Lichtensteiger, my likely to be released list has narrowed to DeAngelo Hall.

If the team releases DeAngelo Hall, BBQ wouldn’t mind seeing him in a front office role.

Hail To The Redskins!

Dontari Poe seems like he's on a World Tour.

Do we have any interest or is his price/fit not good?

His price is way too expensive for teams. I don't think we're interested anyway.

I think I'm okay if we stay put as far as free agency goes until after the draft. I do want to fill some holes with homegrown guys (rather than another flurry of "Plan B free agents" type of guys... if for no other reason than I want someone with higher potential on the line even if that also means a higher bust potential.

I figure the top picks are already plucked for the most part so instead of settling let's see how the draft plays out. If the draft doesn't play out in our favor, the tier 2/3 guys will likely still be there.

Pretty smart of that BBQ nerd to add RJF to the list of possible cuts recently. That saves $3M against the cap. And it could signal that something else is brewing.

Well, it would be nice to see the team move on from DeAngelo Hall ($4.25M) and Shawn Lauvao ($5M).

That $9.25M against the cap for 2017 would have been MORE than enough to sign Bennie Logan on that one year deal he signed in KC or to go after another starting caliber performer.

This team still needs a nose tackle if we are going to keep using the 3-4.

While Lauvao can get on the field and line up for the team, despite being grossly overpaid, DeAngelo Hall is 33/34 years old and hasn't really been a difference maker here in 2-3 years.

Why is he still on the roster?

OK, I get that Bruce and Dan LIKE Hall and as with Kedric Golston don't want to throw him out the back door.

But how about a salary cut to $1.5M with incentives to free up $2.5M in additional space?

I like the resigning of Ziggy Hood IF the team is going to allow him to go back to being a 3-4 defensive end.

Putting him at the nose last year was admittedly an act of desperation after the slate of injuries, but he was simply over-matched in that role at 298 pounds.

But again he was productive in Pittsburgh as a DE.

Yep. I'd also say that if the performance was there - $3M wouldn't be an issue. 3 guys left on the DL from last year; Hood, Lanier & Ioannidis. Hood has been signed and the other two are youngins and possibly hang around in some manner.

Ioannidis doesn't have the size or strength to be a DT in the NFL.

This was one of the picks I think Scot McCloughan blew in the draft.

We cut him last year and he wasn't signed to ANYONE's practice squad despite being a #5 draft choice.

That says a lot.

Yeah, but Matt's cheap and they probably won't give up right away. He can still bulk up and the Skins pressed him as an NT, at least early on. A position he proved in College that he couldn't handle. Why they thought that experiment would end anywhere other than failure is beyond me.

If through free agency, the draft and potential trades the Redskins cannot find their way to upgrade from the likes of Shawn Lauvao at LG it will go to show we still aren't operating at a high clip in the front office.

This is Year 3 since he was signed and he's the weakest link on the OL.

At a salary of $5M his pay is way out of wack with his contributions.

Good teams move on from marginal players like Lauvao when their guaranteed money is almost if not fully paid.

Chris Carter, LB signed (whoever the hell that is). DB Darius Butler visiting...has played nickel, corner, some safety - not really starter material...

I am glad Butler resigned with the Colts.

I didn't see him being an upgrade from any of the corners we already have.

Is it me or does the 2017 ILB class look kinda weak, especially for 3 down lb's?

Is it me or does the 2017 ILB class look kinda weak, especially for 3 down lb's?

Yeah, the overall LB 2017 class is rather thin. Example: WA interviewed Duke Riley (6'/234) LSU, a guy better suited as a WILL in a 4-3. Was a backup in his first 3 years and he could still go in the 3rd but hopefully not to the Skins. If he lasts deeper in the draft (5th or latter) might look at him as a backup similar to Bates.

Maybe we can find that guy who comes from nowhere and unexpectedly turns into the next Monte Coleman.
