I just don't see it as a desperate situation requiring moving into the 2nd. Well, maybe for a guard.

Give the QB all day to throw, and he'll find someone.

I'll take WR's from the 3rd round on, pissed at the world because they feel slighted, wanting to prove the NFL wrong.
The big uglies, to include a blocking TE, make everything else work.

All due respect...that's not what building a team means. That concept speaks to character, ability to work together, unity of purpose - everything a superior talent can do as well as a check-in-the-block, address a need, body of the day.

It's further nuanced coming from a coach who is unique for devising schemes and strategies that exploit exposing team's weaknesses masterfully while masking/underplaying his own team's weaknesses - i.e., "do as I say; trust me; experience shows my way, the Pariot way, works." And then, of course, there is Tom Brady to make it all work.

Maybe surprisingly to some, that's exactly what Belichick means when he preaches need over BPA:

Chris Simms spent a year working as a coaching assistant with the Patriots in 2012. Next to his desk there was a sign that read: “We're not collecting players. We're building a team.”
“I think that's where it all starts really,” Simms said of the Patriots' approach to building a roster. “New England follows the model a little of brains over brawn. They're not in the ‘we're going to take the best player available' and that crap. That makes no sense. When teams say that, I want to say, ‘OK.' Maybe on occasion once every 20 years, but you have to do what's best for your team going forward, positional fit.”

Our draft now is pretty simple. Belichick would identify that we need WRs and TEs, and go after them. We also need at least one O-lineman. With losing Ty, likely two.

1, and by next season, likely 2 TEs.

That's our draft strategy right there. Now find the BPA that fill those specific needs.

If they know they're gonna cut Alex and Colt before the season, then I'd say go ahead and draft a late rounder. Can't stash anyone.
So, opening day, we can carry only 3 QB's.
Haskins, Case, late rounder? 3 guys that don't know the system.
Alex and Colt on PUP?

I don't see it happening.

Alex is not going to be cut. He will be on IR. His contract means he will be here until 2021.

Yet the cheater hasn't provided Brady with top WR's in the draft.

Hell, he could pick HOF'ers every single time, right? I mean, they're so awesome, why doesn't every pick make the pro bowl?

Washington Redskins: Terry McLaurin, WR, Ohio State

The Redskins have nothing at receiver, so they'll have to do something about that on Day 2 of the 2019 NFL Draft.

With so many pundits out there it is not a surprise to see similar predictions from various sources. That could indicate a measure of accuracy before the picks are announced.

Then again, both of us could be wrong.

If things are equal you use the draft to fill out your team.

Chris Hogan is gone, Josh Gordon is out of the league so the Patriots take a WR at #32 .

Talking to those inside the Redskins organization today about last night's picks and it seems everyone is still over the moon about landing a superb pass rusher and getting a QB. Redskins now in the business of getting some weapons.

There is no guarantee Colt even gets back into the lineup. He's still on crutches and we're only 3 months from camp.

Again, he's in the unique position of rarely being in need of multiple positions...I mean how many starters do the Pats need after winning the Super Bowl? Hogan played little to zero part in the championship run, and Gordon was gone after 9 games...so was WR a true need?

We should be drafting a TE and can get a good one in the 3rd round without trading up. We don't just need WR...we need receiver, so if we can draft a TE who is a 3 down player instead of WR who will be utilized much less, all the better.

Common sense suggests it's more complex than that. If available doesn't meet other criteria then they don't draft to fill the need. They instead look for an answer in free agency, trade or go without. The Pats spent several years retooling their defense and searching for competent receivers - drafting need clearly didn't always solve the problem.

On one plane drafting need is a big duh - you fix the weakest/weaker links. Don't need to be Einstein to figure that out. Choosing BPA for that need is a big duh also - whcih is to say I'm not aware of any team that has expressly stated "we intentionally look for avergae players to fill our pressing needs." It's at the intersections of uncertainty where the prioritization comes to matter: if available for a need isn't all that great....but greateness is available in a core strength...do you instead opt for greatness? One can always, of course, trade to make room.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why Bellichick and Parcells drafted Lawrence Taylor when the Gints already had a good LB'ing corps and the team had more pressing needs.

Not poking at you McD. Your statement had no time dimension to it. My argument was to fill a need also - next year when BPA had more content. Strategy figures in all of this as well. Building a team occurs over many years.

In the event, it's obvious there are elements of all of this in decision-making. The principles are applied according to context. I think we can all be satisifed with that claim.
