Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

The more I think about this, the more I see the logic in the move for Keenum. He and McCoy are your 2019 stop gap in what is likely a lost season, then you can clear the deck and do what you need to do to grab your franchise QB in one of the upcoming drafts. In the meantime, use a mid round pick to draft a QB with some upside this year and strengthen your roster at other positions of need. This gives your future QB an opportunity to hopefully walk into a situation down the road where there is already a lot of talent surrounding him, which can put him in a good position to succeed right off the bat.

Of course, this all involves hitting home runs in the draft, something we've struggled mightily with.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

For 3.5 million we just got our backup QB. How long do we have him? I don't care, we got a QB who can start when needed.

Looks like we're still in the Rosen talks, so I am fine with this. We could use at least 2 new QB's. I am also all in on Rypien, and if he's not there...maybe McSorley or Easton Stick as a 3rd option. I don't care if none of them are "familiar with the offense"...we need 3 QB's and this would be ideal to me...provided we do not spend too much on Rosen.

If Rosen is not there? Go ahead with the Rypien plans with a contingency plan for another young QB while Keenum gets one more season to prove himself...then go all in for Tua or Trevor Lawrence. Who knows, maybe Arizona will get the 1st pick in the draft again and want to trade Kyler Murray for one of those guys.

He'll easily beat out Colt. If we don't get Rosen or a rookie who proves ready to start, Keenum will be our starter, not McCoy imho. What people forget is that while McCoy sat on his ass the past 3 years, Keenum has been a fulltime starter and played a ton. It will show.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

In light of today's events, the mock for tomorrow is postponed one week. I just offered the same courtesy to our guest mocker for next Tuesday and she/he accepted - so that guest mock is coming a week from Tuesday.

The rest of our brief mock hiatus will be spent on free agency, this trade (and more?), and prospect/team pro days updates.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I'm curious if this was Bruce's move or if someone like Schaffer orchestrated it? Almost always we get screwed when trading away our picks, this one is good, with both teams happier.

Now, if we can somehow land Rosen too without giving up anything beyond a 3rd then I'll have to give Bruce atleast some props. But, if he doesn't grab a LG within the first 3 rounds then it reverts back to hate.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

From the person who broke the story today. His source was correct on all three aspects of the trade - the actual trade, the financial details, and the rounds involved in the trade.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

That UVA FINAL FOUR OR BUST had to be Boone!!!

Good move in my book. It leaves open multiple paths forward.

I remain vigilantly against wasting the first round pick on the third or fourth QB in the draft. Keenum can play well behind a strong 0-line and some quality skill players - he did so in MN. Well enough to put fans in the seats until the Skins spend some of the future next year to position themselves for one of the top QBs. If we go the Rosen route, so be it. Worse can happen. The only thing that would "anger" me would be if the mortgaging of the future were too high - a Skin's tradition. This would become a self-fulfilling prophesy for failure.

Build the roster this season and next off-season. Surrender some draft wealth next year to land one of the the top QBs. Have that guy in the starting line-up soon as reasonable.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Boone is not that guy. His name is Will and he is a fan of the Cavs - as it should be.

I was basing that assertion off the fact we still get Rosen or the 1st round option. I would hope they don't name a 1st round pick the starter off the bat, but...it is the redskins we're talking about.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Too many holes. But, ya know, there sre mulitple options.

First round on an edge rusher or ILB with coverage skills and speed. A top edge rusher and that d-line becomes incredible! Opposing offensives will have to make a choice: die off the edge or keep the pocket from collapsing in the center

Second round on a fast, fast wr with good route running discipline/talent - or one of these uber TEs.

Both 3rd rounders on o-line - one a LG.

Depth/special teams the rest of the draft.

Safety in free agency. Get Simms back for wr competition. Resign Crowder.

Unknowns: Rosen. I doubt AB is signed by the Skins - too expensive and a wild card in the lockerroom/off the field. I'd like to have his skills on the roster, but I don't see it at this point.

FA possibilities: safety other than Collins; an ILB; LG or quality o-line depth.

There is an opportuntity now, with Keenum signing, to have a good team fielded next season and a run for the brass ring the following season depending on how QB and the o-line go.

Funny how such a small move as signing Keenum suddenly opens up some positive options.

Let's not forget about Robert Davis out of Georgia State. He was starting to come on before he got hurt...same as Simms.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

The one thing I think we cannot do, as much as we have over the course of the past 2 seasons, is depend on injured players from last year...especially young, unproven ones.

I am already falling into this trap with Trey Quinn, thinking he can replace Crowder if Crowder does not re-sign.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Yep, the Case move makes sense as everyone has mentioned. And even if Colt does start the season, he'll be hurt by week 3. If Case is starting, it should make the Vikings game even more interesting!

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

What do you guys think about Ryan Finley,Qb NC State?

6'4 212 lbs and ran a pro style offense in college. Heard he interviewed with the Redskins at the combine and heard he did great and loved the meeting(his words,on NFL Radio).

Have him sit for a year and learn/groom him to take over in 2020?

They took ours, so we took theirs!

If Colt wins the start, he'll be injured by QUARTER #3 ... :nevreness:

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

The offseason thus far really has the feel of a potentially promising reset in Washington if you look ahead to 2020.

To start, you can clear the QB slate clean after a year of McCoy and Keenum are off the books. Additionally, you are likely adding additional future draft capital with the probable departure of Crowder and Smith.

At the same time, in what appears to be a season where Washington will have a tough go of qualifying for the playoffs with Dallas and Philly in the East, Gruden is surely on his last legs.

With all that in mind, it makes total sense to strive towards strengthening the entire defense, as well as the offensive line in the 2019 offseason. If you can add a Landon Collins-type in the defensive secondary to pair with a young, upstart defensive front, you are creating a fairly attractive collection of players on that side of the ball for any potential new head coaching option to consider come 2020. If Reuben Foster can re-establish himself, bonus! Offensively, a promising Guice paired with Scherff, Williams, and what is hopefully a new, shiny, successful young LG is a good core to build around as well.

The bottom line is that if Gruden and our collection of veteran QBs are gone after this year, the cupboard is most certainly not bare in Washington. There would be enough of a foundation for a strong coach who is paired with a top QB prospect (that we hopefully draft) to step in right away, be insulated, and be very competitive in the NFC East.

It might be a little too pie in the skyish, but I really believe that if we play our cards right in free agency, hit in the draft, and can establish a path towards landing our QB in 2020, things might just be looking up in D.C. beyond the 2019 season.

I don't think Gruden's seat is as hot as you all do. And El, your boy Carlos Hyde is now a free agent...

If Bruce and the gang can put together and All-Madden Team, Gruden could indeed survive his own below average performance.

Well, the rumor is Chicago is going after AP. Hyde would be a solid pick FA acquisition for us. There is a small handful of RB's out there...it doesn't have to be Hyde, but we better get one as good as him. We cannot go into the season depending on Perine, Mrashall, and Guice.
