For about a decade straight, the Redskins made some of the worst free agent signings in the twenty-year history of NFL free agency. In fact, a case could be made that the Albert Haynesworth and Adam Archuleta acquisitions rank #1 and #2 in the all-time toilet bowl of FA deals. You’d get no argument from me.
Even the signings that weren’t quite so bad in comparison were still not even close to being worth the contracts, and would be the worst FA signings in history for most any other team.
Deion Sanders had one “almost” TD that “kind of” helped win one game ($56 million).
Dana Stubblefield totaled 7 sacks in 3 seasons ($36 million).
Bruce Smith was interested in the sack record and not much else ($25 million).
Jeff George. Jeff flippin’ George ($18.25 million).
Mark Carrier played in 15 games as a Redskin ($15.5 million).
Thankfully, our trophy-less neighbors to the north proved that it can happen to anyone. Give Andy Reid a call and ask him how all those high-priced free agents worked out for him. Of course, you’ll have reach Andy at area code 913 now, after his Dream Team turned into The Nightmare on South Street.
One would think that, after living through all the above debacles, Skins fans as a collective unit would be as averse to free agents as the Japanese are to war. Not so.
It’s like an addiction: once a free agent junkie, always a free agent junkie.
Peruse any one of the multitude of Redskins message boards out there. While not everyone is screaming for the next big thing from someone else’s team, there is no shortage of fans who are incensed – downright livid, I tell you – that the Redskins haven’t done anything on the first day of free agency.
I’ve spent hours looking at comments on Extremeskins.com, Hogs Haven, The Warpath, and The Hogs.net. My totally unscientific analysis tells me that things are maybe 50/50: for every “voice of reason” opinion, there seems to be and equal and opposite “we need to make stuff happen!” post.
The “make stuff happen” crowd does at least understand the cap situation. They seem to be in agreement that Santana Moss and Adam Carriker should have been cut; London Fletcher probably needs to go too; Chris Chester can’t get a boot up his butt fast enough; and maybe we can live without a defensive lineman like Barry Cofield or Stephen Bowen. Then, the Skins should desperately dump all that cap savings into whatever defensive backs are out there.
Ah yes. Dump the guys who have worked their butts off in favor of the unknown savior. Yet there are those who get it, like a poster named “donofriose” from Warpath:
“Notice how a lot of the premier teams, if not all the premier teams are not making much noise right now”.
Bingo.
Despite the three day “legal tampering” period that preceded free agency, the market still has not set itself yet. There are quite a few free agents out there looking for that big payday, and they aren’t going to find it. The salary cap this season is the same ($123M) as it was in 2009, and as such, there just isn’t as big a pool of money to go around.
Most NFL teams have also learned their lesson–mainly from the Redskins, thank you very little–that the thing to do first is sign your own players that you want to keep. Then sit back, let the feeding frenzy take place, and swoop in and snatch up a guy that fits in your system after the big money has been spent.
This is by no means a hard-and-fast rule, especially if there is one player who really fits into your organization that is available. But take a look at the more successful teams of recent times. When was the last time you saw the Patriots, Giants, Ravens, Niners, Colts or Steelers win the free agency trophy?
Of all the years NOT to make any sudden changes to the Redskins, this is the year. EVERY criterion you can list points to prudent patience:
• Almost no salary cap space
• Coming off a division-winning season with many pieces in place
• Deep pool of 2nd-tier talent in FA
• Low league-wide salary cap number
• Many homegrown free agents to make decisions about
• Best talent evaluation on staff since the days of Bobby Beathard
Mike Shanahan has his system. Bruce Allen is a great dealmaker. A.J. Smith was scooped up from the Charger’s implosion to help make personnel decisions.
These men surely get paid very well to do their jobs. Let them earn their money in one of the dodgiest offseasons ever by making the tough decisions while keeping this team financially sound for the years to come. Let the market set itself, and let the Redskins be one of the crafty, premier teams that picks up a player on the cheap who actually makes a difference.

David Elfin says that re-signing Polumbus and C. Griffin is a priority. It's also looking like Fred Davis will not be back - can't afford him.
