BGO.C.D. - Offensive

Love your optimism Boone. Not sure if you are entirely serious, or if this is a little tongue in cheek? I am traditionally a huge homer, glass half full kind of guy. I entirely want to agree with all of your points, and i think the season may unfold like you describe. But i have to use some degree of caution. i like many other Redskins fans have been burned one too many times. After the 05 season, i was convinced we were going to be an 11-5 type team. Only to end up 6-10, if memory serves me correctly. More recently, i was convinced during 2013 season that we were going to be dominant. I believed in the "All in for week one" hype. I predicted a 12-4, deep into the playoffs team. Man, was i ever wrong. Kind of embarrassing actually, I was preaching to any one that would listen, how great the Skins were going to be.

I could go back to the 2000 season as well, but i think you get the idea. I love your optimism, but i think i will take a cautious approach. My heart says 11-5, but my head says 8-8. Either way, can't wait to see how it all unfolds. HTTR.

There's no tongue in cheek (ewww Mike!). I have zero confidence in the defense, other than what I stated in the blog - we WILL force put more pressure on opposing QBs, have a better secondary, and add an additional 10 takeaways over the course of the season. But I have little confidence that Haslett knows how to consistently stop opponents from scoring.

It won't matter - because I think the combination of Gruden, a rejuvenated and happy RGIII, and numerous weapons on offense (particularly Jordan Reed, who will be a household name by season's end) is going to make the Redskins unbeatable on offense.

Only confession I will make is that I do feel it my duty, as co-owner of a site called 'A Burgundy and Gold Obsession', to be a glass half-full kind of a guy. I put my pants on the same as the rest of you guys. The only difference is, when I put my pants on, I go out and produce hit records.

If Griff is healthy and focused(early reports say yes) and the line can protect(a question mark currently), then it will be like 2012 in that the only thing that can stop the offense, is the Redskins themselves.....except Griff has even more options to use.

This has the potential to be a very special season indeed.....

Oh...Boone? In the words of Gomez Addams : "Good Show Old Man! Bravo!"

Sometimes it's hard to see the big picture when things are happening so quickly, or when your own team is involved. It's not until later that things become clear.

Case in point--last year our second wide receiver was Josh Morgan. Let that settle in for a minute.

Josh Morgan.

This year our fourth and fifth receivers may be better than Josh Morgan.

Weapons, weapons, weapons...

The timing of this blog is perfect. Speaking of, when are you starting the predictions thread this year Boone? I've got five I'm confident about. Your masterpiece should stand alone.

From your lips, baby!

Right there with ya. I'm nervous mostly with our offensive line at this point.....followed close behind by the defensive scheming. Funny, but on offense, I think the schemes and game planning is there...but the offensive line lacks the overall talent needed. On defense, it's the exact opposite. I do believe that we have the talent needed on defense (younger now, overall), but lack the proper game planning and scheme. I guess we'll see which side of the ball can overcome it's inherent deficiency. I hope....BOTH.

I can barely contain myself.....can't wait until the 7th.

PS Missed the drop today, but heading to Fedex in about 10 minutes to pickup my season tickets. :)

Boone, you have no idea how much I would love for every single one of your predictions to be absolutely spot on or even inadequate!

I'm tired. I'm patient...but I'm tired, and I want payback.

I have a little demon residing inside me that is vengeful, spiteful and starved for vindication who is itching to lay a huge can of "Whoop Ass" on all the detractors, haters, disparagers, disrespectors, collusionists, evil-doers (I'm looking at you monumental turds Messrs. Mara and Goodell and your minions :annoyed: along with your legion of other poop-flinging primates), and the rest of the babbling horde that have bedeviled the Washington Redskins for more than I care to think about anymore. It would warm my heart to watch the Skins steamroll whoever the "teachers pet" team is and listen to those insufferably ridiculous and cerebrally-challenged moron announcers try to stammer their way into some kind of b.s. excuse why the team that is "supposed" to be clobbering "those terrible Redskins" is getting hammered by an offense that shreds them like a mother grizzly when her cubs are threatened.

Boone; From your lips.....

State's Evidence, Exhibit #1: 2012 Offensive Production

The prosecution concedes that the preponderance of evidence points to a likely conviction in 'Redskins fans v. James Haslett/Redskins Defense' on the charge of 'Negligent Disregard of NFL Defensive Principles' and the secondary charge of 'Willful and Unauthorized Access to Fedex Field Property (heretofore known as 'The End Zone')'. However, the prosecution contends that offensive production will outweigh any defensive liablity and argues that the Redskins should prevail regardless of said defenisve misdemeanors (see precedents 'St. Louis Rams v. NFC West (2000)', 'San Diego Chargers v. AFC West (1984)', 'Washington Redskins v. NFC East' (1983)).

Yea I likes me some Redskins optimism. Naturally, coming off a 3 win season, you have nowhere to go but up. However, I am really worried about only three things. And I don't have to mention any players to get the point across, this is a big picture view.

The Downside:

1. First time head coaches don't win the first year. Add to that, coaches that were QB's for some reason can't get the job done. I know there is not a direct correlation with the won loss record, but I believe in this, history tells me so. (And don't give me Chip Kelley......the Eagles QB was the surprise of the year, more so than the coach imho). Now as far as offensive genius, Redskins avg 20.9 pts per game. That won't cut it. Because of our defense, we need 27 pts per game and that simply won't happen. You may say well its only one score, but on the average, a 7 point leap on the average is huge. That would have put us second only to Broncos last year (37.9 pts who set the NFL record for scoring) and that just won't happen. Only 4 other teams avg 27 pts, Eagles, Bears, Patriots, and Cowboys.

2. Defense sucks. I don't see where anything will change, and its not about the players. The coach was a failure as a head coach and as Def coach imho. Add to that that Haslett was Gruden's coach in the other league and keeping Haslett was a sign of loyalty and payback. But he gets one year, and I hope he's gone after that. The sooner the better. But we have to lose for that to happen sad to say.

3. Special Teams worst in the league, and jury is still out if they still suck. Special Teams typically won't win games, but they sure do lose them. This kills your offense when we score, kick off to the opponent only to have them run it back all the way. Demoralizing. We are going nowhere if teams play still sucks.

Now can we overcome these factors and win? It can happen, but in my mind these are the hurdles and the many weapons we have don't translate to points to me. It translates to depth, and that there is a big key to surviving the season and making it a winning one. The bright side is NFC East sucks and we can win that one. No one will be more thrilled than myself if that happens again.

The first year HC thing crossed my mind, but I think talent trumps the learning curve. Defenses will not be able to account for Griffin, stop the run, and cover our WRs and TE. They just won't. It doesn't take a complex offense to take advantage of them when talent like we have puts them 'on the horns of a dilemma'. I think this offense could average 30+ points a game.

2. Defense sucks. I don't see where anything will change, and its not about the players. The coach was a failure as a head coach and as Def coach imho. I've already conceded I have no faith in Haslett. But your expectations are pretty low given that we've added some talent in key spots. Hatcher alone (if he gets on the field early on) will make a big difference. Trent Murphy is going to be the best defensive add we've made since London Fletcher. And Philip Thomas can play. We WILL be better on D - flawed scheme and DC or not.

3. Special Teams worst in the league, and jury is still out if they still suck. Special Teams typically won't win games, but they sure do lose them. I didn't address ST, but Forbath (who will prevail IMHO) is a hell of a FG kicker, and he'll be kicking a lot of extra points in 2014. It's really our return team and return coverage teams that have sucked. I don't see any way we don't improve there as well.

Now can we overcome these factors and win? It can happen, but in my mind these are the hurdles and the many weapons we have don't translate to points to me. It translates to depth, and that there is a big key to surviving the season and making it a winning one.

Many weapons don't translate to points? I would argue that we have a healthy RG3, a top 5 RB, 2 of the best WRs in football, and a stud TE whose potential we have only glimpsed. And we have an offensive-minded head coach who knows how to build a dangerous, aggressive offensive attack. That's not 'depth' - that's raw ****ing talent brother. Watch. You can high-five me and it won't take long for you to want to do it.

Micks, first time head coaches do win now, and often. You mentioned Chip Kelly, but I believe you've forgotten a few.

Mike Tomlin: 10-6

John Harbaugh: 11-5. Led team to two upset victories in the playoffs, and lost in the AFC title game.

Jim Harbaugh(quarterback): Turned a dumpster fire into 13-3. Lost in overtime in the NFC title game. Named NFL coach of the year.

28-3. That's Jay Gruden's number of career winning seasons versus losing seasons as a player and coach combined. And the most impressive part of his 28-3? The great majority of those winning seasons came with less talented teams and tough environments. He's won with some of the cheapest organizations, and most difficult owners.

I'm starting to think that he may have been born for this job.

I don't fault anyone for being skeptical. We were 3-13 last year, and ran the coach out of town on a rail. It was Drama City around Redskins Park. And we brought in a guy who, undoubtedly talented, is still an NFL Head Coaching rookie. And then there are all the questions about Griffin.

Still - we have major, major talent on offense, and a new head coach who (as McD5 correctly depicts) has been wildly successful everywhere he's been.

I choose to believe this could be a shockingly good offense and that we'll see it right out of the gate.

Does anyone remember our game in Cincinnati a few years ago? I've tried to find video of the first offensive Cincy play of the game.
