BGO Blind Pig: Week 7 Commanders vs. Green Bay Packers

Apparently the club has labeled Sunday as a Homecoming game..(absurd)

Heard Cooley on Sheehan's pod say he's not attending Sunday (he was newly voted as one of the 90 greatest players)because he has no desire to be a part of the Commanders franchise.
He also admitted that when they announced the new name it hit him in a way he didn't expect.
Also....

So earlier in the year,Riggins said attending the new name announcement would be like attending your own funeral and Jacoby stating that if he gets elected to the HOF,he's going as a Redskin....Bravo to all three!

It's a damn shame what Snyder has done to basically everything.
 
I've never understood the idea of a homecoming game in pro football. The pro game isn't like college and the ties to the team are nothing like the ties to a college. It has always sounded cheesy to me. But I'm definitely digging these former players refusing to participate for whatever their reason. The name change does have a big impact on these guys. But also I'd love to see some guys say they can't participate because of scandals and won't be affiliated with the team until it changes.
 
I think where it falls flat is that this owner had nothing to do with the glory days. Aside from Joe Theismann (who’d sidle up to a man-eating crocodile if he thought it would enhance his image) most of the greats likely view Snyder as a rich incompetent.

In light of the last 30 years, it just shines a glaring light on the contrast between ‘then’ and ‘now’. I feel like our former greats would be better served joint the effort to get the guy who caved and made us ‘the Commanders’ out of ownership, instead of continuing to participate in activities designed to boost the franchise.

There is a lot to be angry at Snyder for, the name really isn't one of them. Let's face it, while there were options out there that were preferred by many of us, none of them were universally supported. Honestly, I didn't think any of them were great. I didn't look at the list and fall in love with any one of them right off.

Put simply, none of them were Redskins.

That doesn't change the fact that no matter who the owner was at this point, it was going to happen. The current owner could have been the greatest philanthropist in the history of NFL owners or Washington DC. He or she could have been a living candidate for sainthood. They could have been the winningest owner in this history of pro sports.

Once the money lined up on the other side, the name was going to change.

And that isn't Snyder's fault. Could have handled things differently and kept the dogs at bay a little longer? Sure. But I think that is all he could have done.

For good or ill, it is done. I, for one, don't believe my feeling would be any better at this point if the name had been one of my preferred choices.

So, I'm with Boone. The alums should come together as a group and with one voice proclaim that they are done with the team until such time as it is in the hands of a new owner. Ignore the name. That is water under the bridge at this point. Snyder is the problem they can do something about. Stop wasting time on a word and do something with meaning.

That’s fair. But if it were inevitable maybe he shouldn’t have proclaimed himself Guardian of the Name just a couple years ahead of completely folding under pressure. He did ‘have a choice’ - he just wasn’t interested in going through whatever pain it was going to take to stand his ground. Or more likely, he probably caved in return for some significant concessions/guarantees that benefitted only Dan Snyder.

And it’s high time the one guy who has remained utterly (and I’ll even say shamefully) silent - Joe Gibbs - speaks on this issue. Very disappointed he has dodged it. I wrote him a letter imploring he make a statement. Not even a courtesy reply but expected.

I don't disagree, Boone. In fact, I would say that Snyder's biggest mistakes where the name is concerned are all the over-the-top statements he made about not changing it. While those statements played exceptionally well with a fanbase desperate to keep the name we all loved, they only set him up to look even worse when the financial pressure became too much.

But no, he really didn't have a choice. Once it became obvious that sponsor money was going to dry up, he had to roll over. Sponsorship money is one of the few revenue streams that I don't think teams have to share so it is in their best interest to make those count. A team without them is working at a real competitive disadvantage in today's NFL.

Honestly, I have wondered if the NFL played a part in any of that. Maybe it was suggested to the sponsors that they pull their support of the team over the name intentionally, as a possible way of getting rid of Snyder. Maybe the league thought he would sell rather than change the name. Or maybe they thought he wouldn't change the name, making the team even more of a financial drag on the league and thereby making it easier to remove him. Just some things I've wondered about for a while now.

One thing is clear, the NFL can teach the Illuminati a thing or two.

Dude acted like he was in front of the whole name change and how bad “Redskins” was as a name.
Noticed he never had a problem cashing those checks though…

Sports is no different than any other walk of life. Don't pay attention to what people say, pay attention to what they do.
 
Yeah, the way Snyder puffed up his chest all those years with "we will not change the name and you can PUT THAT IN ALL CAPS" ... then meekly folded when it became about sponsorship dollars ... made the inevitable change harder to take than it needed to be.

For me, what made it even harder to take was his unwillingness to fight for the new name that it should have been--one I talked about for years befpre--Warriors. They new it should have been that, exhibit A to that effect being they fell all over themselves to explain why they didn't ... that it still had echoes of Redskins (bitch please), and that it would have involved too much legal wrangling over copyright/trademark issues. Utterly flaccid. They could have gotten it done, and I will never forgive Snyder for not even trying.

Same for trying out something that would have been unique and trend-setting ... going with Washington Football Club (Washington FC, DCFC, FC Washington) and rolling out a classy crest like so many big-time other-football clubs all over the world. But no. Same lame excuses about trademark issues.

Bullshit. Truth is he didn't care enough and took the easy way out.

Snyder will go down in history as a fatally flawed human being on a lot of levels--most of them for reasons far worse than how he handled the rebrand--but his unwillingness to stand up or fight for something that might have actually meant something to the remaining fans just leaves me cold.
 
I think Snyder is simply a guy that is self-loathing. Down deep he doesn't feel comfortable in his own skin and uses objects and money to try and find some happiness and peace, which obviously hasn't worked out for him.

I used to work with a middle level manager that went to high school with Snyder in Bethesda, MD and he told me that Snyder was an extremely introverted kid who had few friends and tended to stay away from school activities, opting to do things with his father (who he was very close to).

It wasn't so much that he was hated but he was just invisible, a forgotten classmate that people looked in the yearbook and asked 'who's that kid?'.
