I know it's a Bourbon thread and I don't drink, but I used to be a whiskey connoisseur/alcoholic :laugh:

Anyway, not many people I've met have a taste for Scotch, but since it was mentioned here, I'd like to steer those of you who are interested into the direction of the best I've had the privilege of drinking over the years......

My personal favorites, but everyone has their own opinion. Also, a good rule of thumb if it hasn't been mentioned, blended whiskey is always horrible in comparison to single malt.

As far as the Jura goes, I'm not really sure why, but this 10yo is wonderful, and the 16yo is total garbage. Scotch usually doesn't work that way, but the older Jura gets, the further south the flavor and smoothness go.

Wow that Glendorach is a $400 bottle of scotch. Doubt I'll ever pay that for a bottle.
 
I just noticed you bought the Oban 14 also - another good, non-peaty scotch. That and the Balvenie are my favorites.

I tried the Oban at a restaurant I went to. I was struck by the smoothness. Still smoky for me, but not nearly as bad as most scotches.
 
Jamie oh my God if you haven't tried redbreast 12 Irish whiskey you need to go to the store and get some this is like the best non bourbon whiskey that I have ever tasted
 
Jamie I've got a bottle of the Balvenie 15 that you can have there is way too much peat in that for me

The bourbon scotch and Irish whiskey bar will be in full effect at the draft a tailgate!!
 
Ok, here is the run down from my first Scotch/Irish whisky tasting yesterday.

1. Rebreast 12 Year Old Irish Whisky (one of the better whisky's I've ever tasted, defintely a different flavor than bourbon though)
2. Oban 14 Scotch (Very good but not up to the level of the Redbreast 12)
3. The MaCallan Cask Strength (smoooth considering it's cask strength not sure I'll buy again)
4. Glenlevit Nadurra (smooth but bland and boring will not purchase again)
5. Balvenie 15 (hated it!! very peaty and smokey not my cup of tea, but you Laphroaig lovers might like it)

Amazingly the Redbreast 12 can be found many places for <60 a bottle sometimes under 50. Never has then been a better bargain, could easily fetch 150 a bottle.
 
Finally sampled the Weller last night - hot DOG is that delicious! Can't have more than one or two though, lol.

I didn't buy that **** either, it was the benefit of having a stinking rich alcoholic Uncle :laugh:

I learned a lot from drinking at his place over the years. I learned really expensive liquor is delicious, and most really expensive wine is wretched. I drank a glass of some $1,000+ red wine called Dom. Romane Conti that tasted like italian dressing, ass and cork, and it was supposed to be the greatest thing in the world. I wanted to puke in my glass, and he sat there with his nose in the air pretending it was good. While eating liver pate, which is equally disgusting. Rich people :laugh: The best thing he ever gave me though was some Remy Martin he claimed was something like $40,000 a bottle. We each had a shot - almost :laugh: That **** was by far the best tasting liquor of any kind I have ever had, and I haaaaaaaaaate cognac, it made my face hot.

It's one of those wines I swear rich people say is wonderful just because it's absurdly priced and they think it makes them look important to drink and like it.

Personally, I think Duplin wine was by far the best there was based strictly on taste. Wine snobs can stuff it if they bash it, that **** is delicious.

As a cheap bastard, I'm going to agree and disagree.

Delicious? Absolutely! Cheap? Not at ~ $40.00 for a 750ml bottle.

But, as I stated before, I'm a cheap bastard. A very cheap bastard, so our ideas of what is cheap are probably different.

With that in mind, if you want truly cheap and delicious, I suggest Buffalo Trace at ~ $21.99 for a 750ml bottle.

With the money that you saved, you can get 1.75l of Evan Williams Black Label, (which is surprisingly good), for around $20.00. I bought a bottle, at the suggestion of some members of a bourbon board, and it's good stuff.

I'm donating a bottle of the Evan Williams to the Bar at the DDP tailgate party. If you go, give the Evan Williams a try.
 
$40 is peanuts compared to the Weller & Eagle Rare I bought on Bob's suggestion! :)

(Both are better, but the Hayden was great for the money)

$40.00 is peanuts compared to most of the bourbons that Bob suggest!
