Alfred Morris

Scot's take on Alf going to the Cowboys

“You know what?” McCloughan said at the NFL owners meetings, “good for him. He’s got a home. I wish it was outside the division, but that’s okay.”

“We made a decision in-house, and it is what it is,” McCloughan added. “He’s a good football player. He’s a very good person. He’s had a good career. But, you know, the way the NFL works is you’re always trying to get better. You’re always trying to bring in younger [players]. And that’s part of the process. I hope he does a nice job—except against us twice a year.”

“It’s not about the individual, it’s about the 53," McCloughan said. "It’s my job to make sure that I’m doing whatever’s best—in my opinion—for the organization. We have a great personnel staff. We have a great coaching staff. The front office is phenomenal. We have to just keep striving to make sure that we identify what we want and what we need and understand the value of the player and go forward.”

It is a PR hit, no doubt about it. I don't think Scot and Jay are concerned about it. There can be no doubt that we are taking a RB in this draft. I'm thinking of slotting one higher in the coming mock in the BBQ thread (cheap plug here). Just need to get a feel from what the local beat reporters are saying in the next two or three weeks.

Like I always do, when a Redskins player signs with another team, I unfollow them on twitter. It was tough this time, but I did the deed.

For what it's worth, I don't agree it's a PR hit at all. A far bigger PR hit from my perspective would have been the team opting to keep a player at a position they want to improve for other than football reasons. The Redskins are becoming a grown-up organization, making the kinds moves successful teams make every year by not getting caught up in sentimentality--their own or their fan's--and always looking to improve at every position.

Be angry over Gruden not using him correctly
Be angry over Scot not re-signing him
Be angry over Alf signing with the Cowboys

Take your pick

Myself, I'm not particularly angry with any of the above.

I'm going to continue to observe how the team develops and performs next season, I'll get angry when we lose and get happy when we win.

I could care less about PR. Look what 20 years of trying to please the fans got us. I just want to win consistently. If McLovin and Gruden think we need upgrading at RB or that Almo wasn't a long-term answer, who am I to argue?

Al looked bad. He was slow to cut and missed the gaps. Loved the guy when he was effective, but he wasn't last year and I don't think he will be in the future.

I hear you more than you probably realize. I loved who Morris was and is - couldn't ask for a better guy, better work ethic, and effort on and off the field. Ultimately though, winning football teams have to be about production and talent. They obviously felt like his was waning. I don't think the current front office views it as anything other than a professional decision based on play. We might like a team full of fan favorites and class acts but we also want to win. I think McLovin would argue we can't have it both ways but that's just my sense of him.

In a time where people are trying to hit us with bad PR over the name, I care. I would prefer not to get rid of hard working players who show up, do their best, and NOT cast them aside when it comes time to pay them. Morris might have looked bad but he was also underused, poorly used, and treated like a second thought by a coach who plays favorites and lies to the media about what he is really doing.

I am someone to argue with it because I am a fan of 40 years. Gruden most likely won't be here 10 years from now but I will be. I'd prefer not to have to still talk about the bad decisions that he makes if possible.

I'm with ya Mike.

Im under the impression that since Dallas as the same offensive line scheme, he will struggle there as well.

Unless the Redskins have secretly switched to a zone blocking scheme, that's not true.

That's the thing that worries me the most. He found a division rival that runs the scheme he fits best. Why couldn't he find an AFC team where he fit. I don't know if he will be successful and now that he's with dallas I hope he is not. But he found a place where they run what he likes.

Let's be honest. Alfred Morris at 27 in this offense with 290 carries per year for four years was not going to be a game changer in 2016.

What this offense needs from the backfield is more speed and breakaway ability. We don't have the home run threat that can take the ball 60 yards from scrimmage to complement what we have down the field with Jordan Reed and DeSean Jackson.

Thompson has the raw speed but not the durability, at least not to date.

Should the Redskins draft another back?

Yes. But I think it would be a clear mistake to take a RB in either of the first 2 rounds.

Quality defensive linemen and cover corners don't come cheaply in free agency, the key is to take them in the draft.

We need to use these early picks to build depth at these critical spots first.

If we want to start looking around in Round 3 or 4 for a back that can come in and provide that spark, that's fine.

But again, RB to me is not a major 'take' in free agency or the top round(s) of the draft.

There are simply more of them available than players at DT, CB, rush DE and OL.

The Patriots won their first Super Bowls with Antowain Smith, a 30 year old bargain free agent, as their leading rusher.

We don't need to panic over Alfred Morris going to Dallas.

DeMarco Murray went to Philly in 2015 and the 'talking heads' around the ESPN and the NFL Network were touting the Eagles as potential division winners.

Murray was a non-factor and the Eagles had to deal him away once Kelly was fired.

Umm...did you miss this against the Saints and one other I cannot find right now?

I am a huge Morris fan. Great heart and humility. The type of player that fans like you guys in here love. I still think he has some gas in the tank, and I think Dallas is a real good fit for him and he will do well there IF Romo stays healthy and plays well. I really am bummed to see him go, and especially to Dallas. I also think that his bad season in 2015 wasn't completely his fault. The oline really wasn't opening the type of lanes inside he needs to be successful.

Having said all that, I don't see how this is a bad PR move. This offense has changed quite a bit since Morris had his success here. 2015 showed us that. I think they like Jones a lot, and will probably take a back in the 3rd or 4th round of the draft.

Thanks for the pic. But the fact remains Jones did not consistently show the ability to follow his blockers and hit the right holes. He made a couple of big plays, but was more often stopped at the line for a gain of 1 or 2 yards. Hence his 3.4 yard per carry average.

I am talking about more of a true tailback, a guy with the speed to turn the corner on a defense on a run and outclass slot DBs and LBs in the passing game in open space.

You're describing Lamar Miller. He was just too expensive.

Here's hoping Scot can find another Miller in the draft in the next year or two.

Pretty sure that pic is the end of the long run off the screen pass too. Not a run from scrimmage.

That pic was from the 78 yard screen

Jones run against the Rams was set up by Alfred running 2 times for a total gain of 25 yards then jones going 40 yards or so for the TD
