A Historical Look at the Origins of ExtremeSkins

I just happened upon an old post from 2013 on Reddit featuring a guy named IONTOP. I remember him from ES! And further down is a post by "Pez34." Could that be our Pez? I think there's a good chance. And he posted a link to that old FedExField thread OP I started.

So I inserted that into the internet archives and the thread came up! Format isn't right, but all the text is there, and quite a few photos too!

Damn...that takes me back.. That's not our Pez, BTW.....

Wow, IONTOP brings back memories. He and Rdskin4Lyf21 had just come back from meeting rp in Dallas when he passed away. I was one of the last people posting with them all...my husband was out of town on work stuff.
I couldn't function at work the next day, went home early crying my eyes out. Rps parents joined ES and PMd me, thanking me for being so cool with him, they'd read the posts.
Wow.

I wonder how many of the active posters from back in the day are with us now only in spirit? I would think quite a few more than I’d like to ponder.
More than a few. There are many people that were on ES that I know left us. Personally, I always wondered what happened to NavyDave. Prolific poster with a pretty good knowledge of football and Skins history, he and I became internet buds, but towards the end he had health issues then just quit posting. As with others, 25 years is a long time and folks are going to pass in that span of time. It's kind of the sad part of ES shutting down, so many years of history just..............gone. The team could have at least left the site up and shut off posting. OTOH, the fact that I lived to see Jumbo get banned, even in an unconventional way, makes me smile. :ROFLMAO:

My best bud Jumbo landed somewhere else. His current offerings are hard to accurately describe. My best attempt would be to liken them to the psychotic ramblings of a damaged 13 year old. The fact that he is 70 makes them both sad and disconcerting…but they also explain a lot.

He gave one of my posts a like on the other site. I was surprised.

Just saw this on the other site

When the French Connection came out, it was the bomb. I think Serpico was around that time and of course Dirty Harry. Great era for cop movies.

His performance in John Grisham's The Chamber is absolutely amazing. He was also in JG's The Runaway Jury, another amazing role for him.

Great call! And it's so damn good to see you!!!!

Hope a lot of the es folks who went to bgo will come help build this community up.

Edit: Apparently you have to click on the last line in the square to see the whole post above

70? You reminded me of my own mortality. I thought he was around my age, but when I think back to the beginning, that was 25 years ago, which would make me almost.............60. Shit :ROFLMAO:

Mods put NavyDave on a modified 'ban'...he was the only person who could see his posts.

Any ‘management group’ that celebrated using a ‘ban hammer’ whilst being cheered on by their sycophants, apple polishers, brownnosers, suck-ups and flunkies deserves what happened to them.

It’s a shame that so many good posters were thrown to the side by events. What’s not a shame is that a few deleterious characters with oversized egos took it on the chin.

I negotiated my way out of something like that. During the worst of the RG3-Cousins wars, I got into a spat with thesubmittedone soon after he had become a moderator, despite GibbsHoggsHeaven's warnings that TSO might be ready to be harsh with me. TSO's way of dealing with it was making all my messages need moderator approval to be published until someone felt otherwise. In threads that went several pages per hour, I knew it was effectively a ban. So I begged my way off but with him threatening that if he felt I slipped up, I'd get officially banned permanently.

I kept that warning point on my account for 10 years. I planned to outlast thesubmittedone's moderatorship. I just didn't plan on outlasting ES with it.

There were a couple of posts that I ws proud of. I remember one that called something like The Case against Pastry in which I argued against us drafting Laron Landry because we already had Sean Taylor and badly needed help in the trenches. Some others. I wonder how well my old stuff stands up with hindsight.

It wasn't mods, it was one particular mod. He figured out how to make member posts invisible to everybody but the poster and he thought it was clever and fun. I thought it was unreasonable and overbearing and a little sadistic.

Yuck! I agree with you. The whole point of a message board is community.

Another thing that really, really bugged me - and some of you might remember this as it was kind of hard to miss - was that certain words were manipulated to read something other than what a member typed out and what a member intended. For example, if one tried to have a discussion regarding the Dallas quarterback Tony Romo, the word "Romo" would appear as HOMO on the board after one posted. I won't even go into all the reasons why doing that is utterly immature, stupid, arrogant, abusive, etc., never mind extremely un-PC. Particularly on a board owned by a team in Washington D.C. which is part of the National Football League. It's bad enough that some of the misguided public considered the team name racist, but you're going to go and do that??? Are you kidding??? Come on. Regarding my own posts, I went in and I tried all sorts of tricks to make it come out better, but it was very difficult because the Admin/Mod thought ahead and deliberately made it impossible to fix and almost impossible to improve. Nearly everything I tried would come out HOMO. After quite a bit of time, I finally landed on something that worked, and figured out that if I used the ASCII key and replaced the "o" with an ö it would be an improvement. So all my posts regarding Romo would end up reading "Römö. It's not what I wanted but was a lot better than what a certain ES Admin/Mod intended. It was ridiculous, outrageous. You pick the word you want. Embarrassing. Frustrating. Humiliating. Shameful. And this wasn't a behind-the-curtain thing. This was out there in the open. Every member of the board was affected by this if he happened to type out "Romo" or happened to read the word "Romo" anywhere on the site. Multiple tens of thousands of members. Think about that. And what about the general \ public? The lurkers? Those who weren't even members who liked to read the board? What are they going to think? Things like this made me not want to be associated with the ES board.

Imagine your Josh Harris, or one of the ownership group. And you decide one day to peruse your message board, a board which you own. And you see things like this. What are you going to think? What would your reaction be?

I preferred "petty" and "dickish", but that's just me :)

This is hilarious considering that I was once banned for a week (or more) for saying "Well there's nothing wrong with that" in response to a picture of a football player named Gay.

I have deleted about ten responses. I think my spidey-sense is warning me away from discussing what finally soured me on ES and why I never returned despite my friendship with many of the posters.

You can do it. I have faith in you. Maybe this is the cathartic thread everyone needed :)
