2nd-Annual BGO Ballers Fantasy Football League

I won't bail, only because it's not fair to everyone else playing. Just not having much fun so far. Third in total scoring, but I've had 628 points scored against me. Grrrr....

Oh. Did someone tell you Fantasy Football was fun? Heh.

Did I just get accused of rigging the league? Wow.

Everyone had access to the rules and scoring prior to the draft and should have drafted accordingly - if you didn't read the scoring set up before the draft, that's on YOU and has nothing to do with me.

Going by total points is like giving trophies to everyone in youth soccer - sometimes you just lose.

One final suggestion I have is that maybe next year everyone participating should have a say so in how it's structured and do it by majority vote. It's no coincidence that the commish is destroying everybody. In every league I'm in, the commish is destroying everybody, regardless of the setup. The reason being, whether intentional or not, they structure it to suit their plans. Nothing at all against you Lanky, we all would have done the same thing. I just think all the participants should have input next time.

This might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read.

I'm with Lanky on this....this has nothing to do with him at all. From my past experiences, draft order is determined randomly by yahoo.com and he has no input. My draft slot sucked, but that's just dumb bad luck.

I like the head to head format....cause it's real. A points only league takes away (for me, anyway) most of the fun and nail biting week to week wondering if I'm going to win or lose my "game". Quite frankly, that's how it is in real life. You could, in theory, score the most TOTAL points in the NFL...but, if your opponent outscores you each week you will indeed be 0-16. It would be pretty hard to see actually happening, but it's absolutely possible.

Boone, some days it sucks....but I can't imagine it'll last all season. And, truth be told guys, it's not like we put money into this. For me, it's a lark. Win or lose I'll have fun. Let's all not take this quite so seriously.

Sheesh.

Thanks, LSF.

As far as the draft order is concerned, we had a 12-team order set and ready to go, but two people disappeared from the board and I could not get in touch with them. I tried multiple times to get ahold of them, but could not. When I did replace them (and added a couple more managers), one of the replacements (*cough LJ cough*) decided to disappear for a week or so, and never signed up. I finally had to create a dummy account just to get 14 teams in the league; otherwise we wouldn't have drafted. I planned to put LJ and Matt at the end of the original 12 team draft order, but I did not know you could only edit the draft order until an hour before the draft - I literally tried about 45 minutes beforehand and could not.

That about sums it up.

No, I did not accuse you of rigging the league. I said intentionally or unintentionally, the commissioner sets a league up according to his own strengths and weaknesses in a lot of cases. I am in 4 leagues on yahoo, and half a dozen ESPN leagues. The creator of all 10 leagues is in first place, and it's not really close in neatly all of those leagues. There's no way that could be entirely coincidental. This is the only league I'm in where defense means nothing, which sucks since defense is where I know my ****.

The draft order means nothing to me, I really don't see that as such a big deal as people make it out to be. And going by total points is not anything remotely close to giving out participation trophies, because the head to head makes it to where the worst team can finish good and the best team can be in dead last. The way it is now is more like handing out a trophy to everyone, because you don't even have to be decent to win, it's all about luck. You should win based on your abilities, not luck of the draw.

In our league, the highest scoring team is in 5th place. One of the best teams is in 12th place, and behind 8 teams he is way better than. Wow does that not scream bs? In this league you can go undefeated and suck or go winless and have the best team. It makes it frustrating, and I can see exactly why Boone isn't enjoying it, because all of us would feel the same way in his position..

My guess is that this has more to do with experienced guys being commissioners more than anything else. Let's face it, there is a system to this and experience matters.

No you didn't and this idea should be dropped here and now so that it doesn't get out of hand. You are doing a fine job.

Is Neo in on it too?

:D

(and that's how I got banned, honey. Yes, I'll be using your account more often, dear.)

 It's obviously a vast conspiracy among the interweb elite to keep the common man down.

And Lanky, don't take anything said here personally. As the commissioner, you get to catch all the **** by default, it's part of the job. As Neo stated, you're doing a fine job, and I don't know many of us who would want your position.

I was simply stating opinions. We all seem pretty new at this, at least with this group anyway. We grow from our experiences, and everything can be tweaked. (the waiver time never did switch to 1 day btw ;))

How many of you would have taken Ray Rice with your first pick?
OK that clears that up.

I like the head to head.

I've had some fun this year but its mostly derived from getting points from someone I got off the waiver wire. My draft sucked, my fault. My losses, my fault.

Thanks for putting the league together and fitting me in. Sorry some of you aren't enjoying it.

Just a quick comment....the draft re-ordering was my fault - I asked Lanky to let a couple of late guys in - which he graciously did (and I'm glad). Consequently, the draft order got reshuffled. My fault - but honestly I haven't bitched about going from 1st pick to errr....not 1st pick, so no one else really can :)

Secondly, many thanks to Lanky for taking on this responsibility, organizing it, and doing a great job. That is not lost on anyone, and we appreciate you LL

Thirdly, I have had a bad start. I'm just venting and will be back at it like Jim Zorn this week. Despite being victimized by bad schedule luck, I agree that the head to head is more realistic.

The annoying thing is that in my big-money league I had the 2nd overall pick, and I gambled on CJ2K. I am currently in dead last place out of 12 teams (I am also the commissioner of that league, Extreme). If only I'd gone with Rice there also!

You're doing a fine job Lanky, thanks.

There are plenty of pay FF leagues with big money prizes for anyone who knows their ****. Grow a set, put your money where your mouth is, and go play with them.

Or, when in Rome...

I must say that I've thoroughly enjoyed each week with the head-to-head format. I had one great week where I accumulated a bunch of points and lost, and have also had a few poor weeks that I was lucky enough to win. I think that by season's end, things usually even out for everybody and the top teams will rise to the top more or less.

I must say that I enjoyed having the last pick in the draft. Would I have liked to be higher? Absolutely. At the same time, I thought it took a lot of pressure off me while drafting...I'll consider hopefully making the playoffs a victory, and see what happens from there. I do think my chances are slim though if I continue to get zero production from Mendenhall and a mixed bag of results from Cutler.

To start, defense DOES matter here. On a week by week basis I may accumulate anywhere from 6 to 17 points by my defense. Just this past week, I got 17+ from the Bills defense. My fantasy opponent got -2 points, I believe. Understanding how these fantasy leagues work, generally, helps you make good decisions. I drafted the Redskins defense for their ability to create turnovers and scores over their ability to win or lose games...cause that is what the fantasy leagues will score. Looking at how the Bills defense has been playing prompted me to drop the Redskins defense going forward. Might bite me in the ass, but that's how it goes.

As for the scoring thing.....it IS about luck....and, about how a player plays on any given Sunday. Just like real life. You can score 47 points against the Packers in Green Bay (just as we did in 1983 on Monday night) and still lose to them cause you caught them on a great night when they happen to put up 48 points. Just as easily, you can score only 9 points and still win like we did against Chicago in 2005 when they scored only 7 points. Head to head is TOTALLY dependent on how players perform and as such, you risk losing when you score big...but can win when you don't. Sound familiar?

I drafted Peyton Hillis cause he was supposed to be a stud fantasy RB. Hasn't worked out. Bummer. My fault though, nobody else's. I'm sure Jamaal Charles owners feel even worse. My team is 4-1...although I'm not lighting any fires with my points (except for game one where (of course) I lit up Boone - sorry). My challenge (and I love this part of fantasy leagues) is making something out of nothing. I'm trying to build a strong team week to week with my waiver pickups. Looking for that diamond in the rough that'll shine and then carry me for a while. Not always easy. I started Thomas Jones last week for goodness sakes. But still, that's the challenge....that's the fun.

Lanky's doing great everybody. Lay off. I've been commissioner in a number of leagues over the years and believe me, it makes no difference. You're totally subject to the performance of the players. Bottom line.

So c'mon guys, make the most of this, not the least.

Oh, and again, it's free.

No one has an issue with Lanky. It's all good. We can quibble about details, but there's always going to be someone who doesn't like the setup no matter what it is. I regret ever saying anything other than 'FF is great!'.

Btw. Jamaal Charles was mine too :)

The "it's free" argument doesn't apply. Just because something is free, doesn't mean you can't make suggestions or complain about it. We're all entitled to opinions, no matter how wrong yours is ;)

I was that opponent and just to drive it home a bit more, that 19 point difference in defensive scores was the difference in the game since LSF beat me by less than 18 points. Had the 2 defenses just posted the projected numbers, I would have beaten him.

And I think it makes even more difference now that we are into the bye weeks.

LOL.....I am so sorry, John. :)

I agree, we're all entitled to our opinions...and mine is wrong just as much as the next guy's. But, the "it's free" argument DOES apply.....meaning that my point is basically just to lighten it up a bit. Feel free to complain and suggest to your heart's content...but I was feeling that in this case it was coming across a little heavy handed for the circumstance. It's all good.....

Agreed. My team is clearly underachieving at some positions but I've survived and been able to post my 4-1 record by getting some timely performances from some unlikely places. Tom Brady is a fantasy giant, but he can't do it all by himself. In Week 1 I got a huge day from Mike Tolbert and in week 2 it was Tony Gonzalez. Week 3 - Ahmad Bradshaw, Week 4 it was Julio Jones and in Week 5 - the Bills defense. Without those individual performances, which haven't been repeated by those players to date, I would have lost many more games.

Been squeaking by.

Agree. This most recent loss to MCD5 was partially because my D underperformed (think I only earned 3 points while his was close to 20 pts). I lost by a point or two, so that was a deciding factor.
