2026 Commanders Training Camp

More from Josh Taylor

A. Luke definitley out performing the other WRs sans Terry

C. Croskey-Merritt catching the ball well

All off season, we’ve been hoping LMC takes the next step and JCM improves in the passing game, so it’s great to see all these reports about both those things happening. Hopefully that progress shows up on game day.

Keim said definitively they called around to ask to see if anybody would trade anything for him and they got no nibbles. So that's somewhat interesting also.

They probably did call around, but they cut him several days before FA started with no replacement. Soon after they cut him at least 2 other starting centers decided to retire. Then they lost out on all of the FA centers. Badiasz also got a pay raise.

That sequence looks like a rookie move.

He had Biadasz listed as number 8 out of 35. Oof.

In the spirit of complete transparency…I must admit that I performed a spit-take when I read that. I wish that guy had rated my final essay in college.

Unless they know something we don't.

Which I leave that possibility open.

What's clear is they didn't want him back at all under just about any circumstance. If the divorce is going to happen, might as well just do it.

The vet retirements probably were unexpected, and they did go after Lindy, but lost out to the Raiders. FWIW, I would not have paid any center the money the Raiders paid Lindy.

We'll see. I could be wrong, but for some reason, I just have a gut feel they're going to be vindicated on this one. I'm not sure why I feel that way, but I just do.

The offensive line isn't very good. I've been saying it all offseason. Cosmi is good, nothing more, and the RT is still unproven. I have no idea how they expect our interior OL to run on the Eagles front. On top of that Allegretti is missing valuable reps at a new position.

I hope you’re wrong, especially given how much we’ve invested in the unit in the last few years. Tunsil is the second highest paid player on the team and cost us multiple draft picks. Conerly was a first round pick. Coleman was a high third round pick who we’ve been developing on the field for two seasons now. Cosmi was a second round pick. Allegretti is the only one that wasn’t a big investment, and even he got a decent contract due a proven backup in the league. So credit to the team for investing in the trenches, which is of the utmost importance, hopefully the unit really gels and meets their potential this year.

I will also add that this team has been one of the top rushing teams in the league the last two years and was top 10 in fewest sacks allowed last year, so the line might be better than folks are saying.

Probably nothing yet, but any info on the Tunsil injury?

He's been a meh guard, mostly career backup, and played IMO poorly at guard last year so the idea that he emerges as a decent center in theory seems a stretch on paper.

But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt if they think he's a decent center. I got no idea. But I get why national outfits don't think so. Will see. Supposedly he's a great communicator and Biadaz was not.
Totally am with you on Allegretti not being a great starting G. I am holding my breath on I'm as a C physivcally, not sure he has the base, the temperament, the movement skills but he is supposed to be smart and and really good at the line calls. So fingers crossed.

Tunsil and Amos out....Yuck!

Jerome Ford fumble...he hasn't done much positive so far in camp. He may be RB 5 right now

Love getting the good reports on Chenal. What a LB crew we have. ANd how about Chaisson continuing to shine!

I think Chaisson and Josephs got the better of him on a rep.

Honestly I might prefer Wylie at LG instead of Coleman.
I'd imagine if either T starters were out for a period of time, Coleman would take over. In the meantime, it appears they want him focused on the LG battle

I guess I just don't understand why you thought as highly of Biadasz as you did. I never did. I found him easy to move in the run game and always banged up. He was fine, maybe slightly above replacement level. I haven't gone and done a film study or anything, but apart from the fact he was anointed the starter, I never thought he was that good.

If you believe what was reported by Keim, the team didn't feel comfortable with his communication and line call. They didn't want him. Probably for 4 reasons:
1. While he toughed through things, he was always hurt and therefore diminished
2. Communication and line calls were not what they wanted.
3. Would get moved around in the run game, did not anchor well
4. Given the 3 things above, was more expensive than they wanted to pay.

They didn't even want to have him compete for the job. I don't think there was a rift or anything, but the way they acted, it definitely felt like they thought it was addition by subtraction.

I get that you're down on the move, and that's fine. But I think the reasons the team has all but come out and said are pretty clear. So the part I don't get from your post is when you say "you'll never understand." I mean, they've basically said why they made the move. I understand it. And I'm fine with it. Maybe you understand it and don't agree with it... (Line from the West Wing: "I'm listening, understanding and disagreeing all at the same time." )

We'll see how Biadasz does with the Chargers. Maybe great. Maybe not.

The only thing which is questionable is if they could get anything for him in a trade. Keim said definitively they called around to ask to see if anybody would trade anything for him and they got no nibbles. So that's somewhat interesting also.
You do this thing sometimes where you argue to argue.

I don’t understand means that - I don’t understand. You think you know and understand and that’s perfectly okay - I don’t buy it. I think the team is flat out wrong for releasing him, regardless of “why”. If they think Allegretti is better - that’s one thing. But to release a player capable of playing (and we know he is because he did) and left us with scraps is a bad move in my eyes.

I don’t understand.

I think our center position is perilous right now and we opened a hole we didn’t need to. You didn’t. I’m okay with that.

Yup, scary start:

Commanders LT Laremy Tunsil (shoulder/neck) will undergo testing for injury.

The news was first reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Tunsil will be evaluated and tested for injury, but Garafolo says he’s not sensing huge panic about the injury. Still, Garafolo also said he wouldn’t be surprised if Tunsil has to miss some time. Stay tuned as the tests will ultimately show the severity of Tunsil’s injury.

Not great.

The question will be whether the time missed is just training camp or into the regular season.

It would be really much better to have Tunsil for the Eagles than not have him for the Eagles.

But I guess we’ll see.

I’m more worried about Amos because we have much better depth on the OL than at CB.

I feel like we really need both of them asap and Amos needs to be at 100%, Tunsil we def need by the end of preseason

Hopefully just tweaked it a bit. Totally fine if he misses a couple weeks. We just need him practicing ahead of week 1.

If Tunsil is out I’d move Conerly over there right now, even if it’s a short time. See if he can play there. Coleman should be the RT. Issues at center and guard need to be sorted, but Coleman at RT is a quality answer.

I've repeated the story a few times, but Brian Mitchell once described coming in as a rookie and his mind was blown by how hard Art Monk was working and how hard Art Monk worked after practice. He saw that and thought, "If this guy is doing that much I better get my arse in gear." I don't know if Diggs is in the Art Monk conversation, but he's a very established, high profile vet. For the pups to see him get at it may trigger them to push harder. So far, many of our pups have experienced too many easy camps. I'm sure Bobby Wagner was a good role model on how to be a vet. Terry might have been in 2024, too, but it's good to see someone who made it work.

Semi-related: Last week when they brought Riggo in to the first fan practice, someone asked John if seeing the guys practice made him want to put the pads on again. Immediately, Santana, and Fred said, "no." John, at first, agreed, then thought about it and said, "I don't know. We might be able to do it. Compared to what we were asked to do these guys don't do dick." and then laughed over the practice only running 90 minutes. TBH, I was shocked when I went to a practice once just how easy it looked. Clearly, the players are better than I am, but I didn't come away blown away thinking, "I couldn't do that" or "I wouldn't survive that."

Slightly different league now, training camp used to be about busting guys asses to get them in shape a lot of times. Lots of players who did other things in the offseason because they weren’t all independently wealthy with the best trainers, dietitians, and physical therapists in the country at their fingertips. Professional athletes are expected to stay in incredible shape all the time as part of their career now and camp is more about installing and perfecting complex schemes.

“Game shape” remains its own thing that has to be worked up to through practice and training camp, but camp serves a different function in a football landscape of incredibly complex systems and playcalls.

It’s also sort of under-talked about that pro athletes max out their frames to such an extreme degree now, packing as much dense muscle and speed into their bodies as they possibly can while remaining functional athletes (and for OL, lots of purpose-built fat as well)…that if they practiced as hard as dudes were forced to in the 80’s they would have even shorter careers than they already do. NFL players are like F1 cars now, their fitness and frame tinkered with for best results but not actually let loose to go 1000% nearly as often, with walkthroughs and meeting room work simulating most of the learning and practicing, actual practices meant to ramp them up and see all the moving parts of the scheme together.

But these guys aren’t going 100mph killing each other in summer 2-a-Days for a reason. It’s not all softness, it’s practicality from organizations with a lot more money on the line. The human body is being pushed to its absolute limits in the modern NFL, with size and speed that were never intended, and these guys can only let it rip at maximum effort a certain number of times before their bodies deteriorate carrying all that extra weight and moving so violently.

I’ve always said that the greats from the 80’s, growing up in the same training programs in the same conditions, would be greats today as well. It’s a context thing. But most of those guys (especially the average players who wouldn’t have modern NFL size or athleticism at all) couldn’t just be picked up and plopped as-is into the modern game and expected to thrive (or in some cases even survive) against modern competition, no matter how hard and how violently they practiced and how much “tougher” they may have had to be.

Maybe Coleman at LT since he played there in 2024, let Conerly keep developing at RT. We have good depth at least, but Tunsil would be such a huge loss. He’s one of the best in the business.

Tunsil has some history of minor injuries and receiving rest during camp without it impacting his effectiveness, so hopefully this is nothing more than that, but it is also a reminder he is on the wrong side of 30 and won’t last forever.
