I've mentioned this -- Finlay's podcast hit this point recently too. On first blush this last draft class looks stronger (albiet smaller) as to helping than the previous one. Not in raw numbers because its a smaller class. And of course Jayden makes the previous draft killer no matter what else happens with it.

But from the previous one, McCaffrey, Sinnott in camp apparently haven't shown much. Hampton already released. Jean-Baiptise and MaGee have been banged up. Newton feels like a wildcard still.

But among the new class. Conerly and Amos have supposedly been real good. Lane has been good. Medrano and Croksey-Merritt.

Though in Peters defense, fans i notice give him a hard time on talk radio about McCaffrey and Sinnott. But draft classes, all of them have failures. If I recall 66% of 3rd rounders fail. McCaffrey was a late third rounderthat increases the odds further on failure. He hit on Coleman. 50% of 2nd rounders fail and Sinnott was the later 2nd round pick.

Over time, if you digest drafts, if you can hit on 3, that's a good draft generally. But some fans kill GMs for misses. And if that's the standard all GMs suck, all of them.

Roseman might be having the best run of late but that's after years of plenty of failures.
Wrong thread but I always felt they made a mistake missing on a great WR draft early and reached on both McCaffrey and Sinnott (who I really liked but was a 3rd round grade)

It have read where Sinnott's blocking techniques improved, I hope so! If he can get separation he is fun with the ball in his hands in the open field.

McCaffrey, has there been any real positives from his camp? He just seems non existent like the other WR5s. Yes 5, he does not deserve to be considered a 3 or 4. I hope he can change that!

Remembering last pre season when Sinnott caught the one pass and rumble, bumbled, stumbled for the extra 10 yards or so. Thought we might really have something then.

According to Quinn they both have shown substantial improvement this year, albeit still not where they need to be apparently. I still have hopes, too early still to cut bait on their potential. My understanding is TE and WR often take a couple of years to develop into NFL ready. Particularly for Luke, who has so little experience in the position.

Part of it is (for me) the high expectations I have developed that every pick Peters makes must be a home run, which is unrealistic but actually a good thing after all those years in the wilderness. If he had a do over of last year’s draft I’d bet he might still sign them but in a lower round or as UDFA.

If they don’t improve this season then it’s time to move on.

Here's my math for draft class grades, which I don't think you fully know until the end of season 2 or maybe season 3: I think if you get 2 starters and 2 qualified backups from a draft class, it's essentially an A draft class assuming 7 picks. If you have more picks, you want those numbers to go up a bit.

I think for the 2024 draft,
- Daniels: Starter and Pro-bowl level already
- Mikey S: Starter and close to Pro-bowl level, not quite but clearly capable
- Coleman : Starer on the OL, and can play multiple positions
- Newton: He might start some games, but he's clearly one of the top 3 DTs and they play a DT rotation. So, either primary backup or starter.

That's 4, and they have 3 definite starters + 1 backup/rotation guy, so for me, that's an A grade no matter what. They did have 9 picks, so you'd like to see one more primary backup to really solidify the class. They like Jean-Baiptise and MaGee, but they can't seem to stay on the field. You could argue getting a top 5-10 QB (maybe top 5? I have him as 6 right now) alone makes a draft class an A+.

The 2025 draft might end up being as good, or maybe better overall (absent franchise QB), but to me that would put it at A+ and very unusually spectacular. But in order for 2025 to be an A+
- Coleman: Starter and quickly develop into a pro-bowl level RT
- Amos: Starter and quickly develop into a pro-bowl level RT
- Lane: Starter
- Bill Croksy-Merritt: starter
- Medrano: Primary Backup/Starter over time

That would be every member of the draft class hitting in some way. That would be super unusual, but really impressive.

Not only 9 selections in 2024 but they held the 2 pick in most rounds at least initially. The 2nd pick in the draft but 3 2nds, 2 3rds, and 2 5ths along with a 7th...they need to reach show more success than than 3 or 4 starter or major contributors along with a decent backup or two

A number of these need to get off the bubble and produce

Bringing heat with the 90's Boomer quote. I love it.

FYI, like Mel, I think Boomer should be in the HOF. He completely changed the way people did football highlights, and his nicknames and little sayings were legendary.

Even when he lost his fast ball, he was still better than 87.497% of the folks out there trying to do what he did, and generally failing.

The best example of a damn fool who tried to be Berman-esque and failed is Doc Walker, who so desperately wanted to have nicknames and little sayings, but didn't have the cognitive ability to do it, so he just kept re-using the same nickname "caveman" for multiple players.

I still think it’s premature to call McCaffery and Sinnott failures. Take last week for example, there were definitely some plays where Luke was open and nobody threw it his way, and Sinnott was doing some good work as a blocker, see the Deebo run for example. You would like to see more production from them, but they just haven’t been given many opportunities, last year they both caught the ball the few times they were targeted. Not saying they won’t bust, just that we don’t know yet, we’ll have a better idea by the end of this season.

I am not calling them failures personally but some vocal fans are on talk radio-twitter, etc. Agree, the verdict is still out.

Yeah I saw the PFF guy stress Luke was open for a big play at the preseason game. I'll say though just about everyone who covered camp has said its been a "meh" performance from him the summer -- ditto the one practice I watched.

As for Sinnott, even if he doesn't emerge as a pass catcher (remains to be seen), he's a good blocker -- there is value in that in a TE.

There is some time for both of them.

Listened to Keims take on yesterdays practice, last one open to reporters;
just a couple of highlights

Zack Ertz looks really good (heard this all camp)
Jayden looked good, couple of dimes to Deebo.
He thinks George Fant makes the team but then who becomes expendable at tackle? Wylie has stood out as someone they rely on to step in at T or G as needed. Scott plays on ST a lot, so do you keep him?
Lane again running deeper routes.
He would have KJ Osbourne on the roster as WR and Gallop to practice squad?
C Rodriguez was first to get snaps with the ones today.
Talked about Deebo and JD how they can really help the run game by providing that half second of hesitation in defenses that allows a better blocking angle for the RB to exploit. Spoke to how the blocking looks better this year to include the TEs and WRs.
Did a lot of specific winning time moment scenarios. Quick switching of down and distance and time remaining scenarios. FG fire drills.

I think not having Mariotta out there during pre season hurt them. Dont think it necessarily hurt Mariotta but it didn't allow for such a good evaluation of the WR/TE group.

Yeah Sinnott’s proven to be a pretty good blocker, and he set receiving records at Kansas State., so I believe he will become a good all-around TE. He’s already a good special teamer and depth player.

Luke is a bigger question mark, but we knew he was a project. I’m inclined to give him time because of that and his pedigree

Absolutely.

On ES, some would go nuts when some picks didn't work out. But over time there are picks that don't work out -- its as inevitable as death and taxes.

Making the playoffs with a supposedly washed up Russell Wilson would be an insane turnaround without a franchise QB.

Stranger things have happened though. How's the Giants secondary and OL supposed to be? That's been a consistent issue for their team for years.

I am secretly rooting for both McCaffrey and Sinnott to work out, but it sure would be a great message if Yankoff beats Sinnott out or Brooks beats out McCaffrey. It would assure everyone that it reall doesn't matter where your drafted all that matters is performance. I don't know that either Osborne or Gallup still have it. I guess it's hard to tell with Hartman and Johnson feeding them the ball. Both have been pretty bad.

Right now, if I were in charge of cut downs, I'd enter the season with two QBs and scan the waiver wires for a third. Maybe... maybe... if coach demanded it I'd keep someone on the practice squad, knowing they can be cut at anytime if someone more interesting becomes available.
