2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Offense

Unless Kliff gets heavily recruited for one of the college programs, I don't see him leaving. The open jobs are for bad organizations--Giants, probably Cleveland, Tennessee. He's still getting checks from Arizona too. He'll be back. I give him a play calling pass, even though some of the calls were just objectively dumb, his hands were tied. Chris Moore sucks so very badly.

Yesterday's loss increases my belief that Kliff will return next year as OC. He gets hot with play calling in spurts but tends to sprinkle big boners in. He can't just call clean games offensively, no way would I want him running a team.

I also have been applauding Mariota through the year. I ask however, is it me or was he off all game yesterday whetheer with overthrows under throws and numerous late throws I mean, I get he is't working with a stud WR group but he did appear off.
I think everyone appears off when bad receivers with little experience in the system aren’t where they are supposed to be consistently.

Not a pass for Mariota, but it sure is hard to determine what is rust, regression, etc. when this is the case.

For those following PFF grading, Chris Paul has really cooled off the past few weeks. He now has a league average 60.1 PFF grade. He has the 2nd highest pass block grade among guards at 84.3 and one of the lowest run blocking grades at 48.9. Regarding the latter, maybe that is who he is due to athletic limitations.

Interesting. If this continues perhaps we see a return of Coleman

Here's my other question about that: How many 8-9 man fronts are there since no one cares about our receivers.

He is #2 in the league in tackles
Tackles are rather subjective when determining a good player. How many of those tackles are 8 yards down the field? He's still a strong tackler, something we have very little of this year, but he isn't getting sideline-to-sideline anymore.

His only chance at a HC gig next year is at the college level. I imagine there have been inquiries. I still wouldn't hire him to lead my team if I were an AD or GM. He hasn't won anywhere.

Dolphins clearly believed so. However, I do think this particular issue with Mariota is what prevents him from being a starter. He's still - to me - not a bad backup QB. He's not a starter though.

“His exact words: He said, ‘Y’all stop the run. He’s gonna throw me the ball because he can’t throw,’” Brooks said.
The main issue is not Mariota. It's the scheme. It's not a scheme that can meld to a lot of different personnel, which in the NFL - you are going to have injuries (yes ours are worse than most, but our offense has looked shaky in most games, including some where we had much lower attrition). You need to have a lot of things going well for this scheme to work out, because Kliff wants to win his way. He will lose and win his way, and there isn't any deviation from that - as we go to 3-8. I will give him credit for *FINALLY* using CRod a lot more - which I think could have won us a game or two in the past few weeks, or at least made it more competitive - but even in this game CRod is pulled. Why? Kliff likes to rotate. Just when Vilma was complementing CRod on the previous drive and talking about how he's being allowed to get into a rhythm, he's pulled. Again, why? Kliff likes his scheme the way it is.

Keim has been critical of this, and I agree. It's truly maddening.

Not true. He did this last year with Brown and Zaccheus when N. Brown was out. Problem is we don't have NFL caliber receivers right now. No OC is going to come in and make Chris Moore, Jacory Brooks, Robbie Choosen as your top "deep threats" look good.

Based on what? How is he going to take 4-5 practice squad receivers and build a winning scheme with that?
Why? Kliff likes to rotate.
Everyone rotates, unless you have Barkley, Henry, or the like. C-Rod isn't either of those. They also focused more on stopping the run, since we have scraps at receiver.

He obviously doesn’t have great speed anymore but his tackles number shows he is getting there to make them. As bad as a season folks feel he is having, he still owns a 74 PFF grade for the season

I'm not saying we have great receivers right now, but again, we beat two really bad teams this year - NYG week 1 was a bad team. LVR was a bad team.
We did beat one good team. Early in the season, the offense did not come up where it needed to come up.

Kliff was FINALLY asked about why we don't have as many rushing attempts as other teams - because guess what, the data is there. The stats are there. We have a lot of rushing yards but few rushing attempts, and Dan knows - because it comes up in his pressers. Kliff's answer: "we have good efficiency; I like our efficiency." That just seems to be how Kliff is calling; you have to believe what he says. Low usage of RBs, high efficiency. The defense tends to play the pass a lot more than the run. So, when you're WRs are hurt even a bit (like maybe, your number 1 is out?). You're toast. 3-8, not beating any good teams, except apparently 1.

Talking about "everyone rotates" - no. Just, no. I try to bend over backwards to see others' perspective, but sometimes I can't. Look around the league and count how many teams had RBs with 20+ carries in a game this year. Why does that happen? ADAPTATION. Flexibility, especially with regard to the running game. Something Kliff doesn't do.

Please, let's not close our eyes to obvious things. Let me break it down to simple undeniable facts:
- Do many teams in the NFL sometimes rush their RBs for 20 carries? Yes. (Data-driven; this isn't a thing just for the supposed elite RBs, it's not like 4 guys who are the only RBs to ever get 20 carries in a game)
- Could anyone predict Kliff EVER deciding to do that? No.

Why not? Kliff's scheme/mentality just doesn't allow for that.

I'm not sharing any big opinions here. There's too much evidence that points this way.

Apparently Florida is going to try and go after Kliff if they strike out on Kiffin

Per Nicki Jhabvala, coming into this week: "Washington has used 312 unique lineups on offense so far this season, by far the most of any team. Only three of those lineups have played together for 10 or more plays this season. By comparison, the Commanders had 19 offensive lineups that played at least 10 plays together last season." There is no continuity on offense. None. Putting this on Kliff because "he wants to win his way" is severely underselling the offensive injuries.

We ran the ball 33 times yesterday vs. 30 pass attempts. We ran the ball more than we passed. The Miami defense was literally saying all they had to do was stop the run.

Isn't there a very simple explanation for why Kingsbury is not calling a lot of running plays? We have fallen behind, often by a lot, early in nearly every game this season. Fans will say 'you can't abandon the rushing attack' but the truth is, 99% of the time, OC's are going to go pass heavy when they fall significantly behind for every logical reason in the world. If you need 2, 3, or 4 scores just to catch up, you can't afford to have the clock continue to run.

I also think, to be fair, it's worth noting that Washington was tied for 5th for the most rushing attempts in 2024. That would be evidence that it's not that Kingsbury doesn't want to run more, or doesn't value the rushing attack, but that something has been different in 2025. That something, in my opinion, is that we have been playing from significantly behind nearly all season long. I am pretty sure Kingsbury has stated this directly several times as the primary factor.

I was pretty specific.
This *year* did the Commanders have a RB who broke 20 rushing attempts?
How many teams in the NFL have had a single RB break 20 rushing attempts *this year*? Situational football. Coordinators who see a weakness and exploit it, regardless of their potential predilections. We are all human. It's fine to have some biases. The best Xs and Os guys know how to limit the influence of their biases.

Definitely not underselling the offensive injuries. However, there are very simple things happening right in front of our eyes that are hard to ignore, very simple personnel changes that should make you go "huh?" When CRod is the main back in a drive that results in a TD, and then he is pulled for the next drive? I think most analysts will go "huh?" to that (and some have, in our games, in subtle ways). The thing is, I get it if that is working for you. If it's not? I have a problem.

I think that's a pretty reasonable take. Just one example.

Kliff himself said in 2024 he needs to be reminded by DQ to run, he literally said he forgets and needs to be reminded to run, and why we need to run. Wasn't joking. It's a direct quote. So, kind of strong evidence that yes, Kliff prefers to pass (and I think he especially was enjoying how it was working last year). It's not some big horrible thing to have a preference. Scott also preferred the pass. I am not some mindless acolyte to anything. I just listen and say, "OK, that's true" - and if the data points some way, I say "OK, that's true" - and later if the data points another way, I say "OK, I was wrong."

I'm definitely open to being wrong here too. Hope you believe me, because it absolutely IS true.

Your stat on 2024 rushing attempts, does it count QB runs as attempts? Does it count QB scrambles as attempts? Does it count option plays that ended as runs as rushing attempts?

I am talking specifically about plays where our OC said, "let's run the ball with a running back." That is the aspect of this scheme that I am calling out. We just don't do it, even situationally where it's called for - hot RB, give him the ball. Situationally struggling rush D, strong pass D, give the RBs the ball more.

We don't tend to do that, to our detriment.

As for the "falling behind" argument - I have looked at situational calls. While the end of the game stats show a 50/50 percentage, there are head-scratching situational calls. It may surprise you. In multiple games this year, Kliff has called running play heavy drives LATE in games when we are BEHIND. Strange, right? If you think so, I agree. We end with 50/50, and we passed MORE when the game was close or we were ahead, and we RAN more when we ended up BEHIND with that strategy. It's happened in multiple games. Also interesting: we seemed to score TDs more frequently on those late drives, most likely due to the break in tendency. So we end up with 20+ points, and everyone blames the bad Defense.

Unfortunately I don't have time to delve and find the two or three games (at least) it's happened in. I watched the games, and I watched for that tendency to break because I noticed it along with some friends.

I don't want to come off as "blaming Kliff." I am more just sharing the real data and what I would say are logical conclusions based on the data. In my opinion, this team has coaching problems though.

We haven't had any...nor have we had any that required 20 carries. I'm not going through every box score to prove a point. Very few running backs, in general, are getting more than 20 a game.

What real data have you shown? You keep moving the goal post to prove your point.

I'm not moving any goalposts. I keep saying the same things.

Do you want me to point out where you say things that are just untrue? You made it sound like there are like 4 RBs who get 20 carries in a game.

Some things, when you get it wrong by that much -- come on, man. Either you're not paying attention, or.. well, I don't even know. How can you say that?

It's not some hellish search through so many box scores to find 20s. Look at Rico Dowdle on Carolina. Pretty sure you'll find a few there. I guess you are going to put him up now with Henry as elite?

Now find the Commanders RB who got 20 carries this year. Oh I forgot, everyone rotates except the elite RBs, like Rico Dowdle.
