You should have heard the guy on 106.7 this morning from the Fan in New York. He made tr1/Bubba from old school ES look pessimistic. Everything is working for the Giants, top 5 defense, Conerly will "wet his pants" being in his first NFL game, "going up against the likes of Abdul Carter," but the Giants rookies all looked great. Said defense wins in this league, repeatedly. It was rather interesting.

The more I think about this game, I both love and hate Week 1. The over/under reactions to what we see in preseason really can not be qualified or quantified. It's all conjecture right now.

Yeah its this stuff that is nauseating. I admit its not apples to apples to Washington's touted D line years back -- ours were pretenders, the Giants D line are for real. But...you can't win with a D line alone.

But digesting everything, the Giants are way more hyped as the upstart darling of the season compared to what we were last year.
The one thing overlooked here is coaching: Give me our coaching staff over theirs; especially on offense. In years past, you've accurately detailed how Daboll would coach circles around Rivera (very low bar). Kingsbury now does the same.

I think the Giants D could be really good. They have a number of quality players and legit talent on the line. Some combo of Wilson/Dart should be an improvement for their offense, which should in turn help their defense. I’m definitely not taking them lightly.

But, to give some context…
1. They were pretty bad on D last year (very similar numbers to our D actually) with Lawrence, Thibideaux and Burns (and Olujari). 2 more sacks, fewer turnovers (somehow), 27th in yards, 21st in pts.
2. They did very little to improve their oline and Thomas was injured, so I’m not sure I’d weight their camp showing too much.
3. They only played one halfway decent qb in preseason (Trubisky), and he had a pretty good game.
4. They had (roughly) the same easy schedule we had last year, vs a tougher one this go round.

Also worth bearing in mind that we added Tunsil, Conerly, moved Coleman inside (shd be a much better spot for him), added Deebo, Lane and Bill. Which unit improved more?

Only writing all of that because I think the seemingly one-sided hype has gotten out of hand. Could they have improved more than we did? Certainly possible. Could they beat us? Absolutely. I just don’t think their offseason is (necessarily) much of a barometer.

Not really a response to you SIP, just using your post as a springboard.

Moving this here…

I just need to see Daboll be a good HC before I’ll believe it. He tried to build an all-star staff year 1 who had never worked together, and then there was tons of drama because he couldn’t get along with some of his staff and kept yanking play-calling duties around. Very amateurish. Things got more normal over time, but normal for a mediocre-to-bad franchise. I still have no evidence he’s a good HC, although he can definitely scheme up some plays on offense at times, even with the stone around his neck that was Daniel Jones (who had a mediocre season at just the wrong time for their franchise and got paid—mostly for beating up on us).

So they’ve certainly got some talent. I’ve seen modern day Russ implode as often as be impactful, he’s hit or miss. Dart has potential but if they get him on the field too soon, they could squander it. Their defense can be elite and still not stop our offense, that wouldn’t be a surprising outcome.

I think it’ll be a tough game because we just haven’t shown the ability to wallop a worse divisional foe yet, and week 1 is weird. I’m definitely not overconfident. I’ve got the jitters and fear the worst on reflex.

But the Daboll-coached Giants have not yet been a good team, and without Barkley have not shown the ability to score points. They’ve got some of that old Giants arrogance towards us, earned by their SB-winning teams and passed down through the locker room for decades now at this point, even though we’re actually almost .500 with them in recent years, now. So they’ll have the unearned confidence and the chip on their shoulders.

But the reality is that Daboll is on the hot seat, playoffs or Dart obviously developing are the only things that can realistically save him. They put up a confident, stiff and steely front but that can be shattered by a real team who also now expects to win each week. Our locker room doesn’t know any differently since Daniels arrived. I guarantee our guys, right or wrong, don’t feel they are coming out of preseason cold. They think they know what they are and are capable of.

I have no idea what happens, and also lean pessimistic just due to habit. But the Daboll Giants have done nothing yet over the years and riding that offseason/preseason hype into the regular season with your back straight and leading with your chin held high can get you knocked the fuck out by a team that has actually experienced some winning more recently, and actually has a seemingly good coaching staff, and actually has a franchise QB and belief in his growing legend.

I’ll say we win 27 - 17.

Going to get blasted here but gotta say it:

Giants 24
Commanders 20

Have we ever beat Russell Wilson? His dime throw last season for the Steelers late to beat us at home, and let’s be honest can Lattimore be trusted totally? I think Malik Nabers torches him and/or Amos and has a huge day for the GMen and their Defense is very under the radar sneaky good. I just think we come out a bit flat and for all this and to be honest I have my worries about Matt Gay too I’m saying we lose a close game. Hope I’m wrong though and I’d gladly accept being wrong.

If we lose this game you can write off winning the east and perhaps the playoffs. The giants are one of the weaker teams we play this year. I think we destroy the giants . Wilson cant hit anything but the deep ball

Gonna be close because it’s the Giants.

24-23 Skins

It's an 'any given Sunday' league Tom. Please don't make me have to post the number of teams in NFL history who lost their opener and then went on to win their division, make the playoffs, and win the Super Bowl. Even the most extreme scenario (losing the opener but going on to win the Super Bowl) has happened 6 times since 2001.

I don't know what will happen today, but what I do know is that a win or a loss does not forecast what will happen in the remaining 16 regular season games, no matter who our opponent today is.

On the W/L poll the most popular pick was 11 wins. I think 11 wins takes the East this year. Everyone has a hard schedule. We need to stay healthier than our rivals due to depth concerns but I know one young QB who is not concerned about the strength of the schedule. If he’s given a thought to it at all then I bet he’s licking his lips at the opportunity to go head to head against these teams and these QBs.
A win today would be the best start towards getting those 11 wins but if it doesn’t happen then there’s always the next game. Packers away may seem like a challenge but with 5 anything is possible.

I’ll eat crow on this. I really thought the Giants had momentum and we did not based on the crazy scoring margins in the preseason, and I was criticizing DQ for his 2-17 preseason record and poor week 1 record. I was wrong.

Basically all the guys DQ rested played great: Ekeler, Ertz, and Wagner stood out to me, but also Jayden of course, and basically the whole DL.

And DQ is now 3-4 in week 1 games, so maybe the preseason means nothing, or maybe we’re just good enough it doesn’t matter as much.

Not the only thing you’ve been wrong about. :p. (This post said in jest and with love in my heart.)
