2024 - Way too early draft thread

I think I'm leaning a bit more towards Maye. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with RGIII, but I can't shake that feeling that a running QB who throws is at jeopardy. More, once RGIII had that significant injury he never got his accuracy, timing, or confidence back. He supremely believed in this athleticism. I want a QB whose game is about QBing. Plus, I liked Sam Howell and the reason (some think) we gave up on Sam was size. Daniels may be taller, but he's slight. That elbow picture everyone freaked out over also showed an arm that looks like a twig. If size matters and response to pressure matters, then Daniels is scary.

It's funny, ten years ago when you draft a quarterback who is featured in the run game you get crushed. Now, it's just the opposite. If you are even looking at a quarterback who is a pocket passer or a mix passer/scramble guy the media is down your throat for being outdated.

You can win with a mix of quarterbacks. Media types seems to forget that Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford both won Super Bowls this decade and were almost statues in the pocket compared to ANY of the passers available in 2024.

the point i've always tried to keep at the forefront, way beyond just the QB conversation.

I laugh out loud at any loud pronouncements made based on Pro Days.

Pro Days are the football equivalent of Instagram photos posted as bait on dating apps. Every possible step is taken to amplify attraction and interest. You may very well be titillated by what you see but it is all based on a well manicured snapshot.

Any desire for possible marriage though should require that a real-world view be ardently investigated using a magnifying glass.

That view for player personnel executives should be (1) game tape and (2) private workouts and interviews. And I’m certain that it is. For fans and entertainment media types? Not so much (being kind).

Same thing with making Offensive Lineman run the 40.
 
I think we're going a little over the top in disparaging Pro Days. Sure, they shouldn't be the determining factor, but they must matter somewhat or teams wouldn't invest so much of their capital and their coaches GM's time in going to them. Do we really think Quinn, Peters and the lot are going strictly for a photo op? So there must be some info they get from seeing the player live.

I mean I don't disagree on the overall sentiment. We don't want to get charmed by this skills exhibition and we've all witnessed players shoot off draft boards because their speed, strength, and the skills they show off the field leave GM's salivating, but there's got to be something of value that they think they can see in person that they can't see in game film.

It’s the fans and the entertainment media types that I’m mocking. I thought I made that pretty clear.

But it leads to this point: A large percentage of the media in this area have fallen in love with Jayden Daniels. Sheehan, JP, Mitch, Bram, Callow, probably some others. I refuse to listen to the drek on sports talk radio, so I hear things second hand or through podcasts I do like.

Galdi is the holdout for Maye.

Bram is convinced the pick is Daniels. So is JP. He said he would put 85-90 chips on it. (He did then say he wasn't reporting it, he just feels that's what they are going to do.)

All the coverage to me seems like confirmation bias. They've gone all in on Daniels, and everything which comes out, they're finding a way to spin it to their point of view.

And they might be right. I don't personally think they are. But they might be. And if so, I'm fine with that.

But what I'm frustrated about is the immediate backlash if they pick Maye because they've all convinced themselves the pick should be Daniels. And the story won't be Maye, but the story will be "they passed on Daniels for Maye. " And lord help us if they pick McCarthy. Which again, I don't think they are going to do. But the way I evaluate the QBs, I think they're going to pick between Maye and McCarthy. I don't think Daniels fits what they want.

But, I'm wrong more than right. So who knows. I'm just super frustrated by our media.

This is the issue I have with a lot of the post draft analysis. It is 100% about validating the opinion the person had before the draft. So the guys that are stuck on Daniels, will call anyone else a mistake. The guys stuck on Maye, will do the same. Some of them will be right, but no one will know for sure until they play. But for me, in the position they are in, if they get get any of the top 4 QBs, it’s a good pick. It doesn’t mean it was the best pick, time will tell on that one. But it’s a good pick because we are expecting a QB and we all believe these are the top guys.

Of course the team could trade down, draft a tackle, then pick up a QB out of the next set of QBs. Then no one would know what to say.
 
Oh no, there's been a bunch of us on BGO, the radio, etc. A favorite topic seems to be mocking the importance of pro days this year. I'm guilty of it, too.
 
Re: pro days. Quinn said with JP that most of the work the QB has done is on film, and the pro days are mostly for the meetings and getting to know the players. He sort of insinuated the workout component was less important.

That said, I think there are things which are important for coaches/scouts/GMs to see in person. For a QB, how does the ball leave his hand? Throwing motion can look different in person, up close vs. film. In scripted plays, how is the velocity and accuracy?

I don't think "acing" a pro day really means anything.

However, I think you can lower your stock if personnel people confirm measurables in a bad way. For example, if Daniels can't throw a dart to the outside 40 yards in the air on his pro-day, then that's a red flag.

It's like the Instagram influencer who puts up a picture of themselves trying to look hot but having a huge bugger hanging out of their nose. Unintentionally bad.

I have the same feeling about the combine, FWIW. It's hard to move up in the combine. It's not hard to move down.
 
It’s easier to move up in the combine for positions like wide receiver and linebacker.

For those positions teams seem to go gaga over measurables to an incredible degree.

Ex-coaches arguing with each other about receivers that only run a 4.52 instead of a 4.4 😅
 
Yeah. Thats probably true. Though I think LB is just really tough evaluation in general at the college football level because defenses are just generally simplistic crap. So it is not shocking some coaches are like “athlete? Ok. I can work with that.”

I think that’s what happened to Jamin Davis. He’s an outstanding athlete. And Ron and company thought they could work with him and he would be very good because of his athletic ability.

WR is similar, though I think the tape is more important. But yeah, if you have tape that shows you don’t have stone hands and run a 4.3, that’s going to help you.
 
I was having this same discussion on x and when i said i think maye is the better choice i got so i wonder why you pick the white qb over the black qb… i told them that is a very weak argument and ill be happy with any of them as long as they dont move up.

one of the very very frustrating narratives popping around right now.

I don't care if the dude is purple and was born on Mars, I just want to win. I'm also leaning Maye, and last time I checked, having concerns about Daniels due to the slight frame, his awkwardness in taking hits, and his pressure to sack % has nothing to do with the color of his skin.
 
People that resort those kinds of arguments are intellectually lazy, and frankly not very bright. Of course, there is a small segment of the populace that harbor prejudices. That will never fully disappear. But most people are sentient beings who have a lot of reasons for the beliefs they hold that have nothing to do with race.

I’d take the guy who is purple and born on Mars, because that means he’s not human. We’ve been looking for that otherworldly QB forever. Give me that guy and I’ll take my chances.
 
Mars? When that nerd from Krypton is available. C’mon, last time he took the Lambeau Leap he overshot the stadium.

I’m all for a purple Martian.

however if they’re green and from Venus, that’s where I draw the line.

Also, in the Supergirl show with Melissa Benoist, there was an entire plot line about (I think) green vs white martians and the white martians wiped out the green Martians. If that’s the case, I’d prefer to stay away from the race of Martians that commits genocide… And yes. I watched the show for a few seasons. Judge me all you want. :p
 
Some of these draft simulators offer up some juicy trades. I'd take this one under pretty much any circumstance.
