I find it interesting that not only did Washington not claim anyone, but none of our released players appear to have been claimed either.

This is either proof that our staff has a solid understanding of who they could sneak through waivers or a condemnation of the talent level at the bottom of the roster. Not sure which.
 
You think of ALL the cuts, and the relative handful of guys claimed - the idea that not one of the guys released by other teams is more talented than the guys who are being added to our practice squad, it doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.
 
No Fromm? Weird. I thought they would certainly try to stash a third QB on the PS.

Yeah. I have accused this FO before of being unimaginative and lazy. I think it has more to do with that than anything else unless it has something to do with saving face. I mean it's all but impossible for me to believe that there wasn't a guard, tackle, or linebacker cut yesterday who wasn't superior not only to our cuts, but superior to what we have as depth on our roster.

Edit: Glad to see we're kicking the tires on Jabril. Mind you, that doesn't refute my point. Signing a "name" guy we've all heard of isn't exactly a sign of diligence.

Who would trade for Efe Obada? I hardly recognize the guy when I scan the sidelines.

Other than follow Ron from Carolina earlier in his career, I haven't seen any real news about him in the media.

He's 30 years old and evidently has survived 6 NFL seasons keeping his head down during cut-down day :LOL:
 
You can't control injuries, but what a blown second rounder. Rookie year on IR. Second year starts on IR. Was considered a reach when they drafted him. Worse, the only reason they selected him was because they needed a Payne replacement and then they worked out a deal to keep Payne making Phidrian at best a back up. Just really bad asset management. They reached for need and then decided that need didn't exist and the player hasn't been healthy/good enough to be on the field.
 
I’m not ready to call him a blown pick yet. But it’s trending that way. And I think you are right that there were other needs (and probably better talents) available where we selected him.

He may have been considered a reach by draft analysts but his agent stated outright that there was interest by multiple teams when we selected him and that he wouldn't have lasted out the round so I don't think he was a reach. Except maybe for Kyper or McShay, and they don't count.

I don't think anyone expected Payne to explode last year - I know I didn't. Drafting Mathis made Payne expendable if he had another average year.

Could we have used the pick on another position of greater need? Yeah, that is a solid argument for sure (looking at you, O-Line).

Injured is fair but no real way to predict that. He played in 46 games in 4 years at Alabama which indicates high durability. He is coming back from a serious knee injury that I think we tend to forget was career-ending not all that long ago. We watched the same medical staff go to great lengths to ease Chase Young back into things a year ago. I'm sure they being equally careful with Mathis now.

I still think he will come good. Of greater concern for me is when he comes good. That might be just in time for his next contract and I'm not sure what you do with him then with 2 big contracts in front of him at the position.
 
Retaining (and attempting to acquire) so many TEs really makes you wonder about Logan Thomas.
 
To Neo’s point ‘blown’ is kind of a loaded word as it implies fault. Sometimes picks despite logical reasons for making them just don’t work out. Too early to say this is one of them imho but it hasn’t gone well so far.
 
For the moment, I'm sticking by my "blown" assessment. I Neo's points are reasonable, but if you can't get one regular season snap out of a second round pick for the first two years of his contract... that's a blown pick. We all agree that the front office couldn't have foretold all these injuries, but the pick still smells of Carlos Rogers to me. Carlos wasn't a bad player, but the only reason he was chosen where he was was because of the trade. And you know the saying, "You shouldn't shop hungry," Well, Washington has a history over the last ten years of shopping really hungry. In fact, I'd say over the last ten years, we predicted their first round pick position more and six out of ten times the actual player more than a month before the draft. We draft too often based on need and it's our lack of foresight that makes us desperate.

Now, just to counter myself, if we wholly drafted by need you would have thought we wouldn't draft a safety at second with Kurl, Butler, and Forrest all in house and we surely wouldn't have picked one over a linebacker or guard, but I'm going to stick with the thought that more times than not a predictable draft is not the way to maximize your draft.
