2023 Washington Roster Moves

Young's thought process has always been questionable though. He didn't do anything with the team that wasn't mandatory. He freely admitted that making money anywhere else was as important, if not more important, than practicing football. Is it really a surprise that he treated the game before the trade deadline like a walk-through?

CY doesn't understand "team" and probably because he has always been the best athlete on the field at every level prior to the NFL, he has been allowed to do his own thing.

What blows me away about that game - he knows there are major trade rumors swirling. You’d expect him to come out and show he’s a core player and indispensable.
I don't know about that. He had never seemed very self aware.

I get what you're saying, but he was asked repeatedly about how he felt about all of the trade rumors over the past several weeks. Maybe I'm not being fair - but seems like in that kind of situation you'd be looking to ball out (whether you desire to convince someone to trade for you, or whether you want your current employer to keep you and offer you big money). Just seems weird to come out and play so flat (even by this seasons bar) in that scenario. Maybe he just wasn't up to the task of facing that OL - who knows?

Oh I get you. I guess I'm saying maybe he thinks he was balling out and didn't realize he needed an extra level. It would fit with his whole persona.

I thought this past weekend that Young played like a guy who didn’t want to get hurt right before he got traded. It is a terrible way to play and clearly people noticed. But in the end, he stayed healthy and got shipped out of town. So if these circumstances come up for him again, I expect he takes the same approach. Not out problem anymore.

I too saw a guy who was not going to throw his body around. Whether he knew he was getting shipped off, or if this is the new Chase, we shall see.

Washington has drafted players over time without adequate regard for their emotional maturity and work ethic.

Chase Young as a self-absorbed super athlete that was going to come in and do great things before he ever put on a uniform is echoed by Dwayne Haskins, who did the same thing in 2019, coming in and asking for Joe Theismann's number because his clothing line was named something like 'Dwayne 7' or something similar so that it would not affect his marketing and social media businesses.

Look at the Eagles, Chiefs, Ravens. They draft very well and for the most part they draft players that come in and PROVE they are stars before they start acting like them.

Do you see anyone in Philly or KC getting out in front of the team in the media to promote themselves? No.

Baltimore brings in guys like Odell Beckham Jr. who have caused issues with past clubs due to his comments and yet with the Ravens he has been pretty quiet and fit into the culture there.

We need to find a coach and front office that can have THAT effect on players. Create and enforce a culture of responsibility and performance first and self-promotion second.

It was really telling, on Chase's part, that even THIS offseason after missing the last two because of injury and rehab that he still skipped off season work outs. You'd think that as he was trying to make his comeback and in his contract year, he'd be all in, but he still spoke as if he was a perennial All Pro whose outside work was all he needed and would be best for him.

Chase Young came into Washington acting as if he were a savior of sorts. That kind of arrogance rarely translates in the NFL.

Only rarely do rookies come in and help clubs become much better in one season, it takes 53 players to make a good roster and team, and Young never had a clue that was the case.

He's a selfish guy and while everyone wants to get paid, the best players work and work and THEN demand the dollars.

Just think of Aaron Donald. He was the best defensive lineman in the NFL for a couple of years before he got paid his big contract.

Here in DC, Trent Williams was an all-pro level performer when he got a big contract from the team.

No sane team is going to pay Chase Young $25M a year in a guaranteed deal for over $100M after 7.5 sacks as a rookie, missing almost 2 years, and then posting another 6.5 sacks this year so far.

The good teams would offer him a 'bridge' contract to prove it over the next 1-2 years.

That's why I don't think San Francisco will resign Young. I think for them he is a rental for 9 games and why the compensation is what it is.

I would think with our record and a non-playoff season in the making, Washington should be scanning the practice squads of other teams to try and find some guys that can come in here and get an extended look.

ANY tight ends, offensive linemen, cornerbacks or inside linebackers that are available should be signed.

Let's face it, moving one guy off the roster to sign a practice squader isn't going to be that difficult given the performances at these positions.

Yes, we should be go a diamond hunting!

I still don't know how this team ended up giving Trent Scott a 2 year contract as an OT here.

I thought his contract was a misprint.

This guy is so far down the roster I didn't even remember his jersey number.

Bad news on Stromberg.

“The Washington Commanders have signed guard Julian Good-Jones off the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad and placed center Ricky Stromberg on the Reserve/Injured list.

Stromberg, the Commanders' third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, suffered a knee injury against the Eagles in Week 8. He will miss at least the next four games.

Good-Jones, an undrafted free agent from Iowa State, first joined the NFL in 2020 but was released by the Eagles as part of its final roster cuts before the regular season. One year later, Good-Jones signed with the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL and played in eight total games. He returned to the team the following season and started in 15 games, helping the team run 6.4 yards per rush and 135.3 rushing yards per game.

The Commanders have also made two additions to their practice squad by signing linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle and running back Jonathan Williams. Bouyer-Randle is an undrafted free agent who played for UConn, Texas Tech and Michigan State. Over the course of his six-year college career, Bouyer-Randle recorded 179 tackles to go with 6.5 sacks and nine pass breakups.”

Williams has been with the Commanders for the last two seasons and has appeared in 18 games with two starts. He has rushed for 231 yards on 54 carries and scored one touchdown during the 2021 season.

OLine talent is scarce league-wide.

Signing Jonathan Williams is an odd move to me. It's so unimaginative and lazy. Is he really the best out there? He's a fine fill in player, I suppose, but his value as a vet to this team is diminished somewhat because he knows Scott Turner's system and not Bienemy's.

I guess it's good that we know what we'll get out of him, but getting a retread isn't exactly the sign of a front office who's got their pulse on the exciting free agents out there.

Williams is 29 and has no speed.

I agree there are other RBs out there among the 31 other clubs practice squads that will ultimately make NFL rosters and be productive players.

We never seem to identify them though 😢

I'd love for us to bring in some explosion.... like Chris Thompson type. I hoped Gibson would be it but we don't seem to use him that way
