2021 Roster Updates

I hope Washington is in on Stafford as the idea of competing for Watson with 3 #1 picks is not that appetizing to me even as Watson is a top rate talent and performer.
 
What's funny is writers are still putting New England down as a potential destination.

Watson has a no-trade clause so he has to approve the team and if he chafed under a system where he had no input in Houston he isn't going to agree to go to what is basically a Bill Belichick run NFL prison with the Patriots.

Watson said he wanted to be treated 'with respect and like a human being' when complaining about Houston.

Ask Tom Brady if that is the environment he enjoyed playing up there :p :p
 
yeah I dont see Watson ending up in New England.

My bet is Miami... the no. 3 overall pick will speak, especially since it was originally Houston's pick. Watson goes to Miami and instantly that team is in the convo for AFC Championship.. Not a lock but in the convo.
 
For those of you unfamiliar with Samuel, he was a 2nd round pick by the Panthers in 2017. Only 24 years old. He's smallish, 5'9", 195 lbs. Has hauled in 63% of his passes during his first 4 seasons and has improved every season. His last 2 seasons stats:

2019 54 catches for 627 yds and 6 TDs
2020 77 catches for 851 yds and 3 TDs (caught almost 80% of passes)

I know. Another Carolina player. But he is young, talented, and versatile. At Ohio State, he was a hybrid WR/RB playing behind Ezekiel Elliott. He has break away speed and is a threat to score after the catch. I say go get him - he would be a great fit in this Scott Turner offense.
 
You could do much worse than Curtis Samuel for sure.

I assume 'more immediate help' means this year's 1st. I don't believe the Rams have a first this year so they had to go big in order to get him
 
That deal is crazy stupid and shortsighted for the Rams, and crazy disrespectful to Jared Goff, who may not be the QB Matt Stafford is - but he's reasonably close.

This may be a Les Snead (Rams GM) move, but if they don't get a couple of Super Bowls out of the move, it could cost both he and McVay their jobs. The two both have contracts that end in 2023. For me, the only rationalization (note I didn't say 'justification') is if you are in 'win now' mode. Are the Rams just a Matthew Stafford addition away from NFL dominance?

They'd better be. Because they just gave up a ton to get their QB.

And for those of you who still think we're getting Deshaun Watson, this probably puts the starting discussion for that trade at 5 1st rounders.

Hopefully Rivera and company takes this as a big hint and just keep building the team through the draft.

Get that MLB the defense needs...continue filling out the Oline..etc.....
 
I figured the price for Stafford would be driven up by the demand, but I had no clue it would include 2 first rounders and a young QB. The Lions got a young QB that at worst is a bridge to a new QB. At best he can be their QB for several more years. He’s not great, but he’s shown he can be competent. Plus they get 2 first round picks in 2022 and 2023. Good for the Lions. I can’t imagine they through they could get this much for an aging QB. Stafford is still good and this is an improvement for LA at the QB position, but they mortgaged the future for him. Last I heard their salary cap situation was not good and they could have used those first round picks for cheaper talent. Now they will have to rely on cheaper mid tier talent in the draft. Their window is pretty short now unless they can find all the hidden gems in the draft the next few years.

I also agree the amount it will take for Watson is now astronomical. Get out of those trade talks and look for another plan.
 
The Rams really had no choice.

McVay and Snead have been very active in trading away high draft picks in recent seasons and have an aging roster that needs to win now.

Aaron Donald will be 30 by the start of next season and the team brought back 38 year old Andrew Whitworth to start at LT in 2020.

The draft compensation for Jalen Ramsey was steep and the Rams have a top heavy roster in terms of payroll.

I just wish Kyle Smith had gone to LA to work for the Rams and on his introduction day learned all his high picks for the next couple of years were mortgaged away for the present :D

It's not only Ron Rivera that is looking for a veteran quarterback to make his team more competitive and willing to give up some assets to do so.
 
I heard today that the last Rams 1st round pick was Goff. So they haven’t had a 1st round pick the last 4 drafts and won’t have another until at least 2024. They are definitely in a win now mode and they are in a tough division as well. So they are going for it while they can.
 
What cracks me up is, folks justify the ridiculous deal the Rams just made by saying 'oh - those picks were to offset the huge salary Goff is due'.

Well no shit. And guess who gave Goff the huge contract that later required multiple picks to facilitate offloading him?
 
I heard that one today too. I had a 3.5 hr drive back from Myrtle Beach, so I heard a lot of sports talk. I think the contract offload was the number 1 justification for the cost that I heard for this trade. Some were treating it like the Rams just inherited that bad contract and had to get rid of it. The crazy thing is they will now be paying $42 million for the QB positions this year counting the dead cap and Stafford’s cost. And this is in a year where the cap will go down. Stafford is on the books for 2 more years, then they have to pay him or someone else a huge contract to play QB. They can’t get a 1st round QB in that time without making another move. So 2022 is their only year of QB salary improvement.

The Rams have made questionable personnel and contract moves and it's catching up to them.

First they gave Todd Gurley a huge contract at a position, RB, where attrition is very high.

Then they gave Goff a mega-deal based on one year of reclamation off the junk heap.

The deal for Brandin Cooks from NO cost them a #1 pick.

Last year it was trading multiple high picks for Jalen Ramsey.

Now they have to give up basically another #1 to alibi the transfer of Goff's deal.

McVay is a good tactical coach and got more out of Goff than many others thought possible when he came on board.

The Rams, though, have a little bit of the impatience of Vinny Cerrato in them.

Trading high picks, mortgaging the future and signing players to big contracts left and right.

It's a recipe for at best short term success or in Cerrato's case not at all.

To me, the Rams go out and win the Super Bowl in 2021 or all of these moves cumulative will have failed and the team will be an also ran down the road as they have no developing core.

It will be a roster of 29-34 year old players.
