Well, I see it as a sign that Allen is definitely in charge, and THAT is a good thing.

I'm not trying to browbeat anyone into adopting my view, but here's my response. Gruden is not Kyle Shanahan. They're different guys with different personalities, backgrounds, and I'm sure strengths and weaknesses. You choose one and not the other for 1000 different reasons. Bruce Allen apparently didn't think Kyle was the guy. What more do you need to know about that? As far as experience, you're cherry-picking. Gruden has HC experience, albeit not at the NFL level, but he does have experience and has had tremendous success as a head coach. And I wish people would really look at what Gruden has accomplished with the Bengals offense - the stats are impressive. And they've gotten better every year. In what way does Gruden resemble Zorn in ANY WAY? Zorn had no record of accomplishment as a coach at any level. No one other than the Redskins would have even interviewed Zorn for a head coaching position, while Jay Gruden (whether you think it's a bad thing or not) was being considered for that job by multiple teams. Your criticisms of the Bengals offense, sorry, but the stats don't back up your statements. There is no guarantee that any head coach selection will work out. But painting this as some head scratching move, sorry, I couldn't disagree more.

Yeah... I was on the Gruden bus and now I'm not sure...
There was lots of talk yesterday about whether or not Allen is a true GM or a Snyder friend.
Lots of thinking to do...
cant say I blame him! I wouldn't mind seeing London in the booth on a local level... CSN or something... He's got such a technical understanding of the game on the defensive side of the ball, it could be some fascinating analysis.

So... is what I'm seeing here that our new GM, that is supposed to be in charge of running our organization, has lined his staff with guys from his past?
Is this going to be a staff comprised of all Allen friends?
Maybe he sees something in these guys... but that worries me. Is there not one guy out there that isn't from Allen's past that can fill one of the significant coaching roles?

Also, we targetted a guy who worked with a lot of the current staff. Is that because we didn't want to have to fire everyone and spend all that extra money? Seriously, is anyone else excited about keeping Haslett?

I'm not excited but I'm ok with it if - if - Shanahan really micro managed him and wouldn't let him run his defense. I'm ok with it if that's the case. Big if and I don't think we'll ever know for sure one way or the other.

That sort of thing bothers me... The method itself doesn't mean failure, but I feel like the good old boy club stuff doesn't work out nearly as often as the gold old boys would like us to believe...
You can look at it that way, or look at it that he used his friendship to bring them here. I know that sounds obscure, but lets be honest, this organization has lacked a level of "harmony" since Gibbs 1.0. It might not hurt to get a bunch of "friends" in here and see what happens when people work together. Obviously I don't want us to become Bruce Allen's hangout, but Gruden isn't some chump off the streets. It would be one thing if we hired on another Jim Zorn, and he had ties to Allen, but Gruden was a sought after coaching candidate.
As far as Haslett goes, I've been hearing grumbling that he in fact wasn't the ones calling the defensive plays, it was Shanny. That even Haslett was handcuffed, and only a few month ago did he demand the ability to play call. I'm with you all that Haslett probably isn't the answer here, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility that even Haslett didn't have control over his own unit, which after the bye week ended up moving from 32nd in the league to 18th, so they were juristically better.

Don't really like that it seems McVay is being forced onto Gruden. And of course Haz remaining is not my favorite move in the past 22 years. Bottom line it doesn't matter what any of us thinks, its about the Ws. Show me.

That's an interesting way of looking at Allen bringing in all these guys.
As for the defense - people got really hard on the defense because that's what sticks out but when you go back and look at the start of the year we had an offense that went 3 and out almost every drive to start the first half. Over time it wore down the defense. We had something like a defensive touchdown in each of the first 5 games (or maybe it was 4 out of 5?) that sort of performance should be enough to put you over the top. But our offense was so awful it didn't really matter.
Stats are funny like that... Oh well. If we switch to 4-3 that would be the ultimate piece of information that shows shanahan handcuffed haslett in my opinion. Guess we'll get to find out...

Or perhaps they've been vetting head coaches since midseason when it was clear how bad we were? I don't buy the 'good old boy club' idea. I think this was a well-researched hire, and they knew who they wanted. They interviewed more people in case he said no.

Conflicting reports so far on Haslett or Morris as the DC. I'm betting they will arm wrestle for it.

Alternative view: Gruden is going to have most of the control over the offense, and the Skins are simply retaining a hot young coaching prospect in case Gruden doesn't work out? Its a promotion for McVay, but maybe he's just going to learn from Gruden...who knows? I don't see it as he's being forced on him. Also, they announced it today, maybe that was part of the interview process? Gruden picking his assistants? We'll have to wait for more details to get the full picture.
