2014 Coaching Search Rumors

I don't have a problem with that... I'd prefer we get the right guy, not the splashy guy.

Rapoport reported that the team plans to interview Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. Rapoport also reported that the Redskins will interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, per a source informed of the team's plans. The Redskins will also interview former Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell. Rapoport also reported Wednesday that the Redskins requested and received permission to interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, per a source informed of the team's plans.
Of those, knowing that i'm not a big coach person (don't know much about them all), i'd prefer McDermott. Carolina's D has been built over the last few years, and the smart people (in my opinion) in football have been talking about them for a while. So I like carolina's d.

I say that having not watched one panethers game this year. so... ;)

I like the idea of Bevell because we really need to focus on getting a positive vibe back on offense and developing a franchise qb.

My concern with that move is does that mean Haslett and this anemic version of the 3-4 stays?

Honestly - I'm surprised at how almost universally you all have jumped back onto the hope and dreams bus. I'd like to know what meds everyone is on, because I clearly need a subscription - STAT.

Once you take it, there's no turning back...

This all could be smoke and mirrors if they want someone on a playoff team. Even if they know they want Zimmer, I'm sure he won't make anything in writing while they are in the playoff hunt. Why not interview other guys.... We are going to need coordinators too, who says they aren't interviewing with that in mind.

Why would it necessarily mean that? I can't imagine anyone coming in looks at Haslett and says 'That's my boy!'.

Hell, Boone, if I were doing the potential HC interviewing I'd be tempted to lead the questioning toward a "How would you upgrade our defense" direction and if the answer didn't include "Get a new DC" I'd cross the guy off the list and go to whoever's next.

Hire Whisenhunt for HC and Ray Horton for DC.

Whisenhunt took the freakin Cardinals to the Superbowl
Developed Big Ben
Resurrected the careers of Warner and now Rivers

Horton turned the Cards D around and had improved Cleveland's D and would be an immediate upgrade over Haslett.

Let him fill out the rest of his staff and let's get this thing Rollin'.

Can I get an 'Amen!'? How 'bout a 'Hallelujah!'?

NFL network banner just read Wade Phillips wishes to remain as Texans DC.

And, I'm sorry, but I've never believed Allen was a great GM. His record is mediocre at best.

That would bother me if Allen made it clear he's going to be a personnel GM.

But, in my opinion at least, he made it clear that he's interested in staying in the role of overseeing the organization as a whole and keeping football people on staff to make decisions about personnel. Which, to me, tells me he knows his limitations and is interested in building a functioning organization rather than trying to prove critics wrong by doing it himself.

Didn't he hire Shanny? With that incredibly stupid contract? Or, was he just playing the 'yes' man to The Dan?

It's a blemish any way you cut it.

Can't blame him for following the owner's directions. If too many people think the way you do, no one would ever want to work for the Redskins - no matter the money (almost). The Redskins have the stink of failure, and Dan Snyder has the heady aroma of a gigantic loser now. When coaches come through, they end up with that odor and have to try to wash it off. No one wants to go through that headache.

The saving grace for the Redskins head coach position is you DO always have the old "Dan Snyder" excuse, which is what Shanahan essentially tried to pull. I don't think he was successful at it (for me anyway) - but I do think that DS doesn't make things easy for anyone in that organization to look good, as your post shows.

Personally, I'm with a few others in this thread: give Bruce a chance at managing people. From something Cooley said on the radio the other day, Bruce is apparently very details oriented and involved. Cooley recounted getting called into Bruce's office and talking about an interview he had. Bruce had a lot of insightful advice on what he could have said better, had a lot of notes, etc. Cooley said some other general stuff too, but all basically pointing to Bruce being a sharp, really organized guy with a good head on his shoulders, and someone who definitely had some football knowledge as well. I don't see a reason to discount Bruce right now, and I also think it's important that the Redskins move forward with a structure at least like the one they seem to have right now. GM actively involved/in-charge of personnel, hiring the head coach... head coach hopefully will have plenty of input/insight on who they get... and in none of these positions should the word "Cerrato" come up. Reasons to be hopeful, for now.

yeah, but you are so the opposite way that people take what you say with a grain of salt.

personally, I think we have the tools in place to make things work here. If we get a coach who can come in and really wants to reach the kids. We need to go back to the 4-3 and fast.

That's kind of like the old joke though - how do you turn a million dollars into 2 million dollars? First - get a million dollars... Whether or not the Redskins can stop the cycle of losing and the coaching turnstile, it's all dependent on finding the right coaches and whether Allen knows what he's doing. I think we all believe if we hit a homerun on the coaches things can turn around. But again, that's the 'first - get a million dollars' part of the joke.

So, what makes you think his stature (or lack thereof) within the organization has changed? Because of one press conference where he said he's in charge? I thought he was 'in-charge' when he gave Shanny that contract. Over-priced, without any safe-guards. I thought contracts was his strength.

The problem is Dan Snyder, and regardless of any lackies he hires, the organization will not progress until Dan is gone.

No, he wasn't in charge when he gave Shanahan the contract. You just didn't pay attention.

I'm not going back over 5 years of rumors. The way you describe the situation is not at all how it was described in 2009 when it took place. It's not even close.

And yes. Bruce Allen doing the press conferences and taking control changes my opinion. For now. Given what we have. I think it'll be pretty clear in the near future what is going on.

Nice post - and welcome to the site

I think there are a number of us who are rightfully skeptical that there's been a 'sea change' at Redskins Park and that the Redskins and Snyder are going to find their 'Gibbs'. I hope Allen is making all the decisions and that he is the guy that the more positive among us believe he is. But I am very skeptical at this point. Maybe I'll find my homerism as we see what transpires. I hope so. I wouldn't even want to have a beer with me right now :)

I think you are going to be able to tell fairly quickly if this is going to be headed in a positive direction.

If the search produces a head coaching candidate that is willing to come in and be PART of an organization looking to build and win, I think we are going to be OK.

If the search is a red herring and the club is secretly negotiating with Cowher, Gruden, etc. and we ended up with a splash hire that calls the statements by Bruce Allen into question, then I think we are back in the muck.

I am convinced that Shanahan leaked or had leaked a lot of the negative reports about Snyder and Griffin to muddy the waters and make himself look better for the train wreck of 3-13 and 24-40 that his regime was in fact.

It is misdirection that has gotten a lot of play both locally and nationally.

To his credit this morning Mark Maske when asked about all of that said BOTTOM LINE SHANAHAN DIDN'T WIN ENOUGH games to be retained ANYWHERE in today's NFL, and blaming the failure on outside factors, ie Griffin/Snyder, is not something that will help him get a job somewhere else.

if you DONT find your homerism you are going to have a lot of explaining to do with being Burgundy and Gold Obsessed ;-)

I know that's a joke - I haven't totally lost my sense of humor. But I couldn't disagree with this more. How you react to this kind of failure, it doesn't determine how 'good' a fan you are. I spent half my waking hours on this place - seriously. If I didn't love the Redskins and want them to win, I wouldn't be here. Nor would anyone else. A lot of folks here cope with epic suckitude and starting over for the gazillionth time by adopting a 'Thank God (*insert latest fired coaches name here*) is gone. Now things will be different' attitude. I hope that's the case. But some of us look at the situation and believe it's going to go on and on and on and steel ourselves for the next big let down and the next cycle of mass firings when things don't work out. They are both coping mechanisms and either viewpoint is understandable given where our beloved franchise is.

Those that say 'winning cures everything' are exactly right though. The cynical among the membership need some positive signs and we'll be right back on board. But 'obsessed' doesn't equal optimistic. If it did, stalking wouldn't be illegal :)

I agree with you Bulldog. But I don't think 'moving in a positive direction' is the goal. Just as you pointed out that Shanahan deserved to be fired on performance/record alone (setting aside what appears to be some juvenile, egotistical dysfunction), Allen/Snyder are going to and should be judged on whether we can start winning and be a consistent playoff team. That's where most of my concern lies. I would hope to God that Allen is able to set up a front office and coaching staff where there isn't the kind of dysfunction we just witnessed going on. Where I'm skeptical is our ability to find a young coaching staff that can produce teams that can get the job done on the field, with NFL caliber talent across the board.
