Just having one too many handfuls of Redskins fans pulling for them may well have been enough to doom them.
 
I'm still not over the UVA baseball thing. That one hurts the most.

The Brazil game will always be a great memory and this WC was a great ride. In a way, I'm happy for Japan. They needed a good story and these young ladies provided it.
 
Yeah, hard to root against Japan in context of all they've gone through recently. Still, was pulling for us, but not sad that they got a victory. Sort of like when the Saints won after Katrina.
 
We've all seen games play out like this. The arguably better team fails to execute and take advantage of a myriad of opportunities. The opponent, allowed to hang around, does exactly that and ultimately capitalizes on a couple of mistakes to win.

One coaching move didn't lose this game, the players failure to execute did.

And they know it.
 
Oh yeah, this was a first class choke job. Maybe it was karma for the game against France? Who knows. But we had them on the ropes, got complacent and got caught with a hard right cross. TWICE.

Gotta go with Boone on this one. You want the best players on the field and at that point she was not. She was tired, and when you cannot run any longer you are no longer the better player.

Regardless, these women deserve tremendous credit! They made a bunch of hardened football fans enjoy something we may ordinarily not watch. It was a fun ride and I thank these ladies for putting it all on the line the way they did. The ending was about a game Japanese team who was very opportunistic. When I saw the US, twice, play defensively when they had a one goal lead, instead of keeping the pressure on the Japanese. The Japanese took advantage of the opportunities the Swedish ladies gave them too.

The player change that really hurt was Lauren Cheney going out. One of our best players and when she got hurt and couldn't return, that changed the chemistry significantly.

Ding! We have a winner. Had she been able to go in the second half you likely would have seen Morgan in for Lloyd which would have put Cheney in the central midfield. That was the combo that opened it up against France and what I thing Pia wanted to do again.
 
I think it is a little more than having Cheney in there. On 2 occasions they went defensive and allowed an opportunistic team tie it up. I just think they gave the Japanese too many opportunities.
 
I'd like to give Hope the most disappointing 1:30 of her life.

And yes, that's one minute and thirty seconds.

Cheney going out was killer, but they should have put 4-5 goals on the board while she was in the game, so its no excuse. The missed opportunities at the beginning were inexcusable. I've never seen a soccer game with more opportunities missed than that one (not that I watch a lot of soccer, but still...).
 
There was a fantastic game the night prior. Real Madrid against the LA Galaxy. Real Madrid features the player that many consider to be the best player in the world--Ronaldo.

I don't think anyone considers Ronaldo to be the best player in the game anymore - that title unanimously belongs to Messi.

Speaking of Brazil, however - both they and Argentina lost on penalty kicks in the COPA America tournament. Brazil, the team many consider the best in the world, went 0-4!! On the same night as the American women went 0-3. Maybe something was in the air?
