Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

Yeah, Griffin starting is the obvious choice. Seems like a no-brainer.

If you believe John Keim, he says that RG3 starts, and that's it the owner's choice. McLovin has full control over the roster, with the sole exception of RG3.

Hopefully he comes out and lights it up. The only really bad scenario would be if he looked mediocre to weak all year--like Jason Campbell for example.

Then the team would be forced to make a decision on if he's worth a big salary or not.

If all he is is mediocre, he will not get, or would he expect, a big salary.

I choose not to believe drama filled rumors with no substance but I do hope he lights it up so we can get back to winning.

Well, if nothing else, there is reason for (cautious) optimism defensively in 2015. Meaning that Robert may get more chances in the second halves of games to come to the LOS without the pressure of having to pass downfield to catch up. And, more subtly, if Gruden comes to find he has a defense he can count on not to fold in key situations, he can call plays accordingly and try to let Robert take some chances and do the things he does best ...

If Robert's development is the biggest question heading into year two, the development of the defense and the snowball effect a stout defense can have on an entire team, may be a close second.

If you were McCloughan wouldn't you want to let Griffin show he can or can't do the job on his own?

If he fails then that buys Scot another year of rebuilding in 2016, this time with Snyder remaining silent.

Let's face it, the Redskins are in clear tear down and then up mode. That is going to take awhile.

I would rather start Griffin in 2015 and draft Grayson or another qb for the future in case RG doesn't work out.

There will be no pressure to start in 2015 and Cavanaugh will have another young pupil to work with.

McCoy is a competent backup but there is no upside there, and the Redskins are not going to extend Cousins unless he gets on the field and is a world beater in place of Griffin if he goes down.

Even I will admit Griffin is a bust if he gets a chance this year and fails. I would rather take that draft pick and use it on a lineman instead of a qb.

To me, this is the best part about having Scot. I know he will make mistakes and blow picks. But I also know that he will hit on more than he misses, and I finally feel like I have some whose judgment I trust making those picks. If he goes QB at some point, I'm down with it. If he sticks with OLine, that's cool too.

Personally, I'd rather load up on the big uglies, but if he grabs us a QB in Round 2, I'm going to figure the kid slid a long way and it was too good a bargain to pass up.

Trust is a wonderful thing.

Agreed, Fear. Cautious is the word until we see evidence otherwise ... it's the only reasonable approach left us after all these years. Still I think we all recognize the significances represented by 1) Haslett's no longer being here, and 2) the wholesale, considered personnel acquisitions on that side of the ball to date. Taken together, those two things make this particular offseason for the defense feel markedly different--more so than any offseason on that side of the ball since before the switch to the 3-4 under Shanahan. Maybe even longer--I find myself thinking this is the most bullish I've been on our long-term defensive commitment since Gibbs hired G. Williams.

So yeah, I'm still kind of staying medium, but I do find myself actually looking forward to seeing our defense develop over the course of a season, rather than just waiting for the other shoe to drop again, for the first time in a long time.

Honestly, the draft can't get here fast enough. Man...

FYI. Next week we will go to four mocks and the BGO-centric mock. The following week (draft week), we will feature a mock each day and two on Wednesday (morning and evening). During the draft, we will have mocks for remaining picks.

After the draft, BBQ will periodically update the roster as UDFAs and FAs are added. We will not try to predict who will be signed amongst the UDFAs - it is a monumental task that is virtually useless.

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

Here is our latest Redskins mock as we get closer to the draft. On Mondays, we will post mocks that have no trades. Wednesdays will feature mocks that have minimal trades. Thursdays will showcase a mock that centers on BGO member preferences. Fridays will feature mocks that have multiple trades.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2015.

Mock Draft, 2015

Round One: Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa
Scherff is arguably the best tackle on the board and the Redskins simply can’t afford to pass up this quality lineman. He is a beast in the running game and equally the same in the passing department. Playing in the powerful Big Ten, he more than held his own against quality competition.

Other Possible Targets:
Leonard Williams, DT, Southern Cal
Danny Shelton, DT, Washington
Vic Beasley, OLB, Clemson
Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford

Round Two:
The Redskins trade down in round two and receive an extra third rounder.

Round Two: Eric Rowe, CB, Utah
The PAC 12 standout is solid in the running game and does an excellent job of jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage. As a tall and solidly built corner, Rowe has the ability to mirror a receiver that comes out of his release. He has a knack of forcing the ball from the receiver’s hands upon delivery. Rowe is a great tackler who can play zone or man to man. He also played safety for three years before making the switch to corner.

Other Possible Targets:
Ty Sambrailo, OT, Colorado St.
Arik Armstead, DE/DT, Oregon
Byron Jones, CB, Connecticut
Jalen Collins, CB, LSU
Benardrick McKinney, ILB/OLB, Mississippi St.

Round Three: Tre Jackson, OG, Florida St.
The massively sized ACC lineman is a force on the offensive line. He is another player who engages defensive linemen with a nasty attitude and with great leverage against defenders. Jackson holds his ground against the best defensive tackles and struggles a bit against pass rushing DEs. Thus, he is better on the inside and not projected to be an OT.

Other Possible Targets:
Donovan Smith, OT, Penn St.
Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB, Louisville
Garrett Grayson, QB, Colorado St.
Jay Ajayi, RB, Boise State
Devin Funchess, TE/WR, Michigan

Round Three: Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson
The first team All-ACC linebacker possesses great speed and sticks to tight ends with a consistently good coverage. He is quick from sideline to sideline. Occasionally called on to blitz and did so effectively. Anthony has a great attitude and is a hard worker.

Round 4: Durell Eskridge, FS, Syracuse
The Redskins add a talented free safety/strong safety from the ACC in a surprising move. Eskridge played FS, but he can play SS in the NFL as well. He will have the luxury of spending a year learning the system with no pressure of starting, but he could force Dashon Goldson to the bench as the season progresses. With the newfound depth at S via free agency and from the draft, the Redskins will have size, speed, strength, and needed talents at these two vital positions.

Other Possible Targets:
Other Possible Targets:
Kurtis Drummond, FS, Michigan St.
Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
Jacoby Glenn, CB, Central Florida
Vince Mayle, WR, Washington St.
Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke

Round Five: Robert Myers, G, Tennessee State
You would be hard pressed to find another person bigger than Myers in all of Middle Tennessee! The Ohio Valley Conference lineman would probably rate higher if he was in a P5 league, but make no mistake about his talents and abilities. He anchored a line that produced many victories and plenty of points. Solid in pass protection and the running game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmfD3NipHag
Other Possible Targets:
Xavier Williams, DT, Northern Iowa
Sean Mannion, QB, Oregon St.
Kaleb Eulls, DE, Mississippi St.
Taiwan Jones, ILB, Michigan St.
Xzavier Dickson, OLB, Alabama

Round Six: Joey Mbu, DT, Houston
The Redskins had a private workout with Mbu and the interest in him is apparently very real. He has the size to shed blockers and often did so when excelling in the run defense. Not a pass rushing specialist, but was expected to occupy blockers and did so effectively against quality AAC competition. Could sub for Knighton at times when needed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuOeLtV4KZs
Other Possible Targets:
Jarvis Harrison, G, Texas A&M
B.J. Finney, C, Kansas St.
Julian Wilson, CB/FS, Oklahoma
Darren Waller, WR, Georgia Tech
Rakeem Nunez-Roches, DT, Southern Miss

Round Seven: Nick Boyle, TE, Delaware
Boyle comes from the Colonial Athletic Conference and can snag his share of receptions, but blocking is his forte. In fact, his superior blocking skillset is better than that of Logan Paulsen’s. Boyle could easily end the stay of the UCLA product.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGfh1B-Mf5s
Other Possible Targets:
Dechane Durante, FS, Northern Illinois
A.J. Tarpley, ILB, Stanford
Zachary Zenner, FB, South Dakota St.
Tyson Chandler, OG/OT, North Carolina St.
Chris Bonner, QB, Colorado-Pueblo

Round Seven: Connor Halliday, QB, Washington St.
Halliday would be rated higher, but suffered a grueling ankle injury last season. Only recently has he fully healed and was able to impress at his pro day. The Redskins GM was at the workout to see the PAC 12 record setter perform in cold, rainy, raw conditions. Some would say that Halliday has the “it” factor that McCloughan covets and could be an absolute steal at this point in the draft.

Hail To The Redskins!

In the past, though, the optimism of the team on defense was usually about current players coming back from injuries or poor seasons and 'reaching their potential' as opposed to getting new players that are young enough to be hungry about their careers.

I am glad Brian Orakpo has moved on.

The drama surrounding his many comebacks and statements about being an elite rusher were getting old.

Maybe they should also take a look at this guy :

Adam Carriker benched 225 FORTY times at the #NFLVeteranCombine ... that's more than ANYONE put up at the rookie #NFLCombine

via @DanHellie

Carriker was an underrated player for us until he started to get hurt. He just couldn't stay healthy after that one 'breakout' year with 5.5 sacks, tackles for loss and qb hurries.

I don't see our GM bringing in many veterans trying to come back from major injuries to be depth players.

Fourth and fifth rounders are so much cheaper under the cap.

That's one of the reasons bringing back Jarvis Jenkins didn't make much sense.

His salary to retain him would have doubled over the past two years but his play has gone sideways.
