OK, I wasn't going to think this out loud, but here goes:
The real issue that keeps nagging in my head is how poorly KS and MS have handled RG3's development. They have botched things badly with him in many ways imo.
First off, RG3 has a big arm and is very accurate. Yes he runs the option very well, but to run that option as much as the Skins continue to do is really dumb imo. Not just because RG3 takes hits on the runs, but more so because of the number of hits on the slow to develop pass plays out of that formation. KS is calling way too many slow to develop, deep drop, play action passes imo. RG3 has taken so many hits in these types of plays. It's no coincidence that RG3 suddenly is not seeing Garcon steaking deep wide open on play action passes. RG3 knows he's not protected, and he's coming off a big injury. He's a little jumpy back there and it's completely understandable. The Redskins have been putting young, first round QBs behind crappy olines for a decade now(Ramsey, Campbell). The fact that MS has continued this approach is absolutely mind boggling to me. He should know better. You don't trade the farm to acquire a talent like RG3, and then line up a bunch of scrubs in front of him.
KS is just as much to blame. He should have spent the last year teaching RG3 the nfl offense we were running with Rex, teaching RG3 how to read defenses. Right now he should be calling way more quick, short and mid range throws out of the pistol or short drops. RG3 is great at zipping the ball out quickly in multiple receiver formations, and we barely did that at all against the Broncos. What did we throw, 1 quick slant?
Also with the injury. MS should have made the decision early on that RG3 was not going to play until he was absolutely 100%, and until he was a regular full participant in practice. RG3 should not have started until he looked completely comfortable and sharp in practice. To rush RG3 back to start in week 1 after not playing and barely practicing in preseason was just dumb, no matter what RG3 wanted. Players want to play, and coaches need to protect these younger guys from themselves sometimes. For RG3 to tell the press in preseason that he didn't need preseason, and how Brady and Manning had missed preseasons shows how immature he is in some ways.
So, you take your young, rusty, coming off an injury QB, and you throw him in there behind a very shaky oline. Then you stay with your read option/play action offense almost exclusively and expose said QB to way too many hits. Does anyone in here really think this has been smart coaching?
To add insult to injury, we have a another very talented QB sitting on the bench collecting dust. I feel very strongly that had Kirk Cousins been named the starter during preseason until RG3 was completely ready to go, the Redskins would be leading the NFC east right now. Cousins can run the pre-RG3 KS offense very well. The Skins looked great in preseason with Cousins at the helm. They should have rolled with Cousins and let RG3 heal up and watch Cousins run the offense. RG3 would have learned a lot, and would have come back healthy and hungry.
I know people will say hindsight is 20/20, but a lot of us were thinking these things during the preseason. We may not have all wanted to voice these concerns out loud, but I know most of you guys have at least considered these points because they are obvious considerations.
We will see how out all works out, but there a whole bunch of things MS could and should have done much better imo.
