Random Commanders Thoughts

Always pleased with a win. Yeah, it should've been 34-7. But after beginning with a Good Spurt, our current starting QB, Spurt Cousins, went AWOL, and became Bad Spurt. Indecisive, and inaccurate. Luckily for us, Good Spurt reappeared at the end to help get the win.

We need Spurt Cousins to be Good Spurt, for the entire game next Monday.

He wasn't perfect, but come on @Ax, 102 QB rating, 3 TDs, 330 yards. Cousins was overall very good yesterday. He lead the winning drive for a TD. The Redskins will have to play 4 full quarters and somehow get to Carson Wentz to beat the Eagles - not just Cousins.

I think it's a lot simpler than that. In 2016, you had Garcon and Jackson getting 21% each of the passing yards, Crowder 18%, and Jordan Reed 14%. 3 WRs accounted for 60% of our passing yards.

This year, a running back has the largest % of our receiving yards, Chris Thompson with 27%, followed by a TE, Vernon Davis, with 18% of our receiving yards. Pryor, Grant, and Crowder are our next biggest producers, but none of them has more than 17% of our production.

So far this year, our top 3 WRs account for just 39% of our receiving yards.

One could argue that having non-WRs as our top 2 leading receivers means that we don't have top tier talent at the WR position. But I think it's more a reflection of Kirk spreading the ball around to numerous weapons. Personally - I think our offense is much more effective overall this year, simply because teams don't know where the ball is going on any given play.

9 different recievers caught the ball yesterday. The ball is getting spread around I think that's a good thing guys won't put up huge numbers unless they get a bunch of YACs but we have weapons on offense.

Winning ugly and even with inconsistency throughout the game still counts. Hoping that we really get prepared for Philly, also I believe we have a lack of conditioning problem, we just can't stay on the gas all 4 quarters, not even for 3 quarters of the game on offense or defense.

I never said Spurt didn't play well overall. But he is inconsistent. He has spurts of brilliance, followed by spurts ineptitude. Fortunately for us, he got back on a good spurt to help win the game.

As for the Eagles, if we get a game full of the "Good Spurt" performance from the 1st and 4th quarters on Monday, we will win. We can win a shootout with Good Spurt.
If we get an extended period of the "Bad Spurt" performance of the 3rd quarter, we will get blown away. Shades of the Monday Night Massacre at FedEx to these same trophy-less birds from Philthy.

We should run more play action.

Here's the thing though - it's like Redskins fans don't watch other NFL games :) EVERY QB in the NFL is inconsistent at times, even the great ones. It's like expecting that every drive is going to lead to points, and when it doesn't that this somehow represents failure. Success at the QB position depends on a lot of factors, and only some of them are controllable by the QB himself. Protection, route running, ability of targets to catch the ball, success of the running game, playcalling, you name it... The things that Cousins can control, such as accuracy and decision-making, well not to overstate it, but he's near the top of the league. He doesn't throw a lot of picks and, get this - only 2 other QBs in NFL history have had a higher career completion %. You don't do that by only playing well occasionally. Or by being Colt McCoy :)

You're right. He can be more consistent. And we'll need him to play well to beat the Eagles. But he's playing pretty damn well.

The biggest disappointment so far has been Crowder.

He hasn't stepped up to be the go to player for Kirk on third downs and key possession plays.

Ryan Grant is in fact making those key short and intermediate grabs for the team.

It also seems clear that Reed is out there on one leg. He can't run deep, he has no moves if he catches a pass.

He is out there as a decoy while Vernon Davis is the real receiving threat.

Overall the Redskins didn't improve the offense in any of the areas that appeared to be weaknesses after finishing up against the Giants.

We still don't have a #1 receiver.

We still don't have tight ends that can block which really hurts the run game.

And we don't have a true starting caliber halfback to get yardage when the blocks are there.

Sports Illustrated was a joke when they said the Redskins were a 4-12 caliber team before the season but PFF was right in saying the Redskins had one of the least talented depth charts at running back.

Thompson is a great weapon but he is a specialist not a meat and potatoes rusher for 16 weeks.

The Redskins backs are young, but RB seems to be one of the positions where rookies can come in and make an impact right away if they have the goods.

Riggins said that a runner either has that natural vision to see holes developing and follow his blocks or not.

You can be a great athletic specimen like Matt Jones and not find a home in the NFL for that very reason.

I'd say Reed is the bigger disappointment so far. Crowder is underperforming but I think it's more due to Gruden's playcalling and an emphasis on RB/TE passes. Of course, it's a 'chicken or the egg' discussion - are the WRs not as capable and so Kirk is going to RBs and TEs, or is that just the tweaked offense and playcalling? Hard to know. I knew that CT and Vernon had been a big part of this offense so far, but was shocked that they're our two leading receivers.

As for halfback, isn't that really the role that CT is playing? We can call him a running back, but they use him like a halfback. In fact, yesterday, I swear they called a halfback option pass for him but he didn't have time to get it off. Gruden has even referred to him as 'our best receiving halfback' in press conferences.

We still don't have a #1 receiver.

We're spreading the ball around, and 9 different players caught passes, and had over 400 yards offense, and when all that is happening, does it really matter if any one player is standing out, or is a #1 receiver ?
Maybe we're equally dangerous or more dangerous, if we have numerous threats that can catch the ball at any given time, than if we had one super #1 receiver. If you have the latter, then teams can double up on him, and remove that threat, and essentially most of your offensive threat. There's plenty of crappy teams with a "super #1". But with this offense, they can't possibly eliminate all of our threats.

Fear, my concern is that if Chris Thompson goes down with an injury this whole offense is going to ground to a halt.

So far except for Davis the receivers don't scare anyone in terms of big play potential, and the other running backs are not front line performers in the NFL.

One of two things happen if Thompson goes down (which, if they keep trying to feature him like they did last week is more of a question of when and not if...

1 - Our offense is directionless with no home run threat to really take some pressure off the offense.

2 - It forces our other pass catchers/quarterback/coaches to make sure some other guys are getting involved... Crowder, Grant, Reed and Doctson would need to step up quite a bit in that scenario.

I'd like to see Thompson stay healthy AND find a way for the other guys to get more involved, personally speaking.

Hopkins to IR torn hip muscle.

As long as he is a thorn in the side to Dallas twice, Giants twice, Eagles once, and 2 other teams he can have as many thorns as he wants

Dangit....and I actually had Hopkins on a Fantasy team. I blame myself.
