Commanders electing NOT to exercise the 5th year option on Jamin Davis.

We are SO drafting a LB or two in this draft.
 
Commanders announce they will retire Darrell Green's number this season.
 
I'm happy for DG - I only wish he'd been a little kinder and more generous with fans over the years. I've heard far too many stories in my lifetime of him being, to put it kindly, less than gracious with admiring fans. It's a shame really, because it's sort of kept me from admiring him the way I would like to and I think a segment of the fanbase feels this way. One of the greatest to ever play the game no question.

Jamin Davis' off the field issues only add to the disappointment coming from a guy taken #19 overall and in Year 3 still not locking down a regular position on the defense.

Luvu would not have been signed if Davis was in the team's long-term plans.

And it's absolutely awesome to listen to. I know this isn't specifically Commanders related, but I didnt want it to get lost in the NFL thread. This is the level of understanding NFL players need on demand.

 
The Bears made a mistake last year by not just sitting at #1 and taking Stroud.

Sometimes you outsmart yourself with the potential return in a trade.

I remember the patience the Steelers had in letting Ben come to them at #11 and the Packers had when Rodgers dropped all the way to #24.
 
So which team that drafted a left tackle in the first round has the best vet left tackle? We need to be very focused on the waiver wires. I hate to band aid the line, but that looks like it might have to be done this year. There are still good prospects out there, but will they be ready to go on game one? Jansen was. Plenty of second and third rounders o linemen have started their rookie years, but oof... my hope of snagging a top tackle feels long gone.
 
I think he could be the first or second player taken tonight - not only a great CB but one of the best punt returners in the draft too. Someone's going to get a steal.

DJ Humphries, while coming off an ACL, is still floating around. I don't know if he will legitimately be ready to play this coming season, but he was a guy that played for Kingsbury in Arizona and I wouldn't be surprised if he got added to the mix in training camp. That's just one name that I have kind of been keeping in the back of my mind.

We keep saying that this is not necessarily about 2024. In that case, I don't necessarily see the problem with adding a developmental tackle that can be ready in a year or so, and leaning on a collection of vets to hopefully hold down the fort in 2024. There is always the option of taking the tackle next year too. The question becomes if Lucas and another vet LT can play well enough to not impede Daniels's development and mindset as a rookie QB...you don't want the kid getting inside of his own head.

I would love that. Absolutely LOVE that.

I don't think he lasts to 36 though. Of course, I didn't think he would last to Round 2 either, so there is hope.

The answer to your first question is the Chargers. They have an all pro LT and took the top LT in the draft. He’s had some injuries, so maybe that is a concern. But I don’t see them cutting a 25 yr old LT who has been an all pro.

There are still a lot of good tackles in the draft. Perhaps there will be some guys left go after the draft, but the way teams were taking tackles in the first round, it seems like most teams weren’t happy with who they had. So getting their discards may not work out.
 
Better find some OL help for 2024.

We should have moved back into Round 1 to grab a tackle.

Now we are sitting there at 36 and 40 and the proverbial BPA will be a S, LB or CB blah blah.

Those spots don’t help us develop the most important player we have taken in years on the other side of the ball.

All that cap space and picks to maneuver and we end up with Lucas and Wylie starting the opener?

We may need some long term help in the back seven on defense but there are also a bevy of younger players especially in the backfield to sort through on this roster and we could have waited till next draft or FA to address.
 
Quickies ...

* Anyone else notice who (I believe) wasn't in the Washington draft room last night? And notice Robert Kraft in the Pats draft room talking on the phone with his new QB? Wonder if there are critics out there lambasting him for being too involved.

* Our draft starts for real tonight. We picked our QB, and how that works out will be largely what's remembered about the 2024 draft. But there are a LOT of really talented intriguing young guys who will be available at #36 and #40 tonight, as well as possible gems plucked after that. Tonight and tomorrow will have a HUGE impact on how the first iteration of the Josh Harris/Adam Peters Era gets off the ground.

* I'll admit it. I have weak character. I was irritated when they trotted out a dead serviceman's family to make the draft announcement and gave us a solemn public service moment at pick number 10 of Round 1.

* James Williams will be available at some point late tonight or tomorrow.
 
I think they should've tried harder to address the OL in free agency. But at this point, it is what it is. I am not nearly in the hurry you are BD to give up draft picks to move up. There are still guys out there who may prove to be outstanding NFL tackles (Paul, Suamataia, etc...). Even if we don't get our future at LT this draft, they'll figure it out for the short term. There is nothing inherently 'smart' about moving up, or standing pat - ultimately it depends on what assets you end up landing, and we won't be able to assess player quality for quite some time.

Kraft is too involved :) And yes, I noticed and was glad not to see Josh Harris at that card table with the other front office staff and coaches. Maybe that's the SDS talking...

PS - anyone not following, Brother Om and I got into a big bourbon-fueled argument about Josh Harris (and my perception he is too involved in football-related activities) last weekend. See, we have this unique thing - we're friends and can disagree and still be friends afterwards. It's crazy....

You're assuming a lot there, brother. Are we sure they didn't try to trade back into the 1st? And sure that their grand plan is to go into the season with Lucas and Wylie starting?

Lots of days between now and when the live bullets start flying in September.
